The Station Road precinct in Parow nowhas walls adorned with four larger-than-life artworks.

The murals were initiated by the GreaterTygerberg Partnership (GTP) as the Art inAction project and conceptualised by cele-brated street artists, three of these workswere painted by the artists themselves andthe fourth by members of the public.“We had quite a few people who joined in

with the painting since we started on Friday(21 August),” said artist Jeremy Puren fromSee Saw Do projects in Woodstock about thecommunity effort.He said most of the people who came to

help were made aware of the projectthrough mailing lists and Facebook posts.Passersby on the street seemed hesitant tojoin in though. But their curiosity and admi-ration were plain to see. Several stopped tolook, nodding and smiling encouragingly atthose who were balanced on ladders, palettein the one hand and paint brush or roller in

the other.“This is awesome. It is good for the com-

munity. It means someone cares,” one manremarked.Xanele Puren says she and Jeremywalked

around Station Road for inspiration beforeshe made the design.“We decided to do something that people

around here can relate to, hence the generalmarket theme,” she says.This community participation artwork on

the corner of Station and Victoria Road wascompleted on 23 August.

According to Jonita Pasjar of theGTP, onemore painting needs to be done as part of theArt in Action initiative.“For this we will need a collaboration of

artists, as this is a really big wall.“The project has been very successful so

far. Thewhole aimwas to add to the commu-nity and we feel we have achieved this. Re-sponse from the public and business ownerswere very positive and we will do it again.Wehave already put theBellville CBD in ourbusiness plan for the new financial year,”she said.

Die polisie in Bothasig het onlangs ’ngroot deurbraak gemaak toe hulle ’nman in besit van gesteelde goedere ge-

vind het.Volgens die polisiewoordvoerder, ao. Jac-

ques Mostert, het konst. Collin Jaftha inlig-ting ontvang dat goedere wat uit ’n motor-huis in Burgundy Estate gesteel is, by ’nhuis in Bothasig gestoor word. “Hy is vertelwaar die goedere was en het tydens sy on-dersoek uitgevind ’n saak van huisbraak isin Junie aangemeld. Daarna het hy na dieadres gegaan, die goedere gevind en ’n inwo-ner in hegtenis geneem. Die eienaar van diegesteelde goedere is ook gekontak en het syeiendom uitgeken,” sê Mostert.

Volgens Mostert het inbrake in die omge-wing die laaste ruk toegeneem en word dieinhegtenisneming verwelkom.

“Dit blyk of motorhuise die nuwe teikensis. Die inbrekers teiken motorhuise, omdatdit gewoonlik buite hoorafstand van diehuis is. Ons wil ’n beroep doen op mense omseker te maak hul motorhuisdeure is or-dentlik gesluit. Baie keer ry die polisie ophul rondtes en sien motorhuise wat sommerwawyd oopstaan. Wanneer huiseienaarsalarmstelsels installeer, moet hulle ook diemotorhuis insluit,” sê Mostert.

Hy het ook versoek dat mense met inlig-ting oor inbrake die polisie moet bel.

An attempt by a pedestrian to cross theN7 highway resulted in a four car pile upover the weekend.

According to a report from City of CapeTown Fire and Rescue Services spoke-sperson Theo Layne, the incident tookplace on Friday 21 August shortly after19:00 when a man crossed the highwayand was hit by an oncoming motorist bet-ween Bosmansdam and Plattekloof roads.

The incident resulted inothermotoristsswerving to avoid the body.

Layne says the incident saw four vehi-

cles damaged in the crash and five adultsand four children injured.

“There were four male adult patientsand two female adults injured. A womanwas trapped in one of the vehicles and hadto be cut out with the use of the jaws oflife,” Layne said.

Bothasig police spokesperson WarrantOfficer Jacques Mostert says an investi-gation is underway and the pedestrianwas killed in the crash. He says the identi-ty of the man is unknown at this stage.

In recent months the N7 has become sy-nonymous with pedestrian fatalities. Ear-lier this month a 33-year-old security gu-ard tried to cross the highway shortly af-

ter 19:30 and was hit by an oncomingvehicle travelling in the direction ofGoodwood.

In July, a motorcyclist reported seeingtwo bodies in just a week and questionedwhat authorities were doing to tackle theissue. At the time, provincial transportdepartment spokesperson Siphesihle Du-be explained the highway had been identi-fied as a hot spot due to the high volumeof pedestrians crossing there daily.

Teachers and learners fromBosmansdam PrimarySchool recently participated

in a project called “Don’t GoThere” hosted by Bothasig police.The project forms part of the po-

lice’s community outreach pro-gramme and is tailored to deglam-ourise being in jail and letslearners know what jail condi-tions are really like.Twenty learners, accompanied

by two teachers and two membersfromBothasig police, set off to vis-it the juvenile facility at Draken-stein Correctional facility inPaarl.According to police spokesper-

son Warrant Officer Jacques Mos-tert, the learners received a warmreception by members from Cor-rectional Services who explainedhow the system at Drakensteinworks as well as the implicationsof being incarcerated.“The learners were very im-

pressed by the cleanliness of thefacility but amazed to find out thatthe inmates are tasked to keep itclean,” Mostert said.“They were informed regarding

the various programmes in Drak-enstein and addressed by inmatesas well who pointed out to themthat had theyknownwhat being injail is like, they would never havecommitted crime.“They were also shown the

sleeping facilities and how the in-mates are taught to make theirbeds and again informed thatcrime does not pay and what re-

percussions it has.“They were also taught that

crime is disrespectful, a lessonwhichwehope they took to heart,”he said.The learners were also told they

cannot do what you are used to athomeand a lack of privacy. “Whenthe learners left Drakenstein theyvowed that it was a place wheretheydidnotwant to stay. Thereaft-er the learners visited a drug reha-bilitation centre in Durbanville,”Mostert said.“There they were informed by

residents currently undergoingtreatment regarding the dangersof substance abuse as well as thereasons why they had initiallystarted.“The main message was that

there is help available and thatlearners could ask for it if needed.Afterwards theywere divided intogroups and had the opportunity tospeak to the residents on a morepersonal level,” he said.“Learners were requested to

hand in an essay on their experi-ence of the day’s activities. Thecommon thread was that theproject had shown them that theuse of drugs were not cool as theynow had firsthand knowledgeabout the effects of drug use on theuser and their families and thatjail was not the place to be,” ac-cording to Mostert.Jacques vanDeventer, a teacher

who accompanied the learners,said that he was approached by alearner who thanked him and thepolice and informed him that he isgoing to changehis attitude for thebetter.

Dis veral die staaltjie oor ’n nietige ge-beurtenis op een oorsese besoek wat haaraltyd sal bybly. “Madiba het my een laat-aand erg ontsteld uit sy hotelkamer geska-kel en beveel om dadelik die destydse poli-sie-kommissaris, Jackie Selebi, in Suid-Afrika te skakel. “Hy het opgelet dat daar’n koekie seep uit sy badkamer weg was,wat heel moontlik deur een van sy persoon-like sekerheidspersoneellede gesteel is,”vertel La Grange.Sy verduidelik: “Madibahet altyd sy eie toiletbenodighede gepak engebruik, ten spyte van die feit dat die hotellewaar hy tuisgegaan het, altyd seker gemaakhet dat daar ’n volle reeks van net die besteontwerpersprodukte in sy badkamer vir

hom uitgestal is.Hy het dit egter nooit gebruik of enigiets,

saam met hom gevat nie, sê sy.Op die betrokke aand moes La Grange self

inderhaas as “getuie” optree toe Madiba sypersoneel ingeroep en kasty het oor die ver-miste badproduk.

“Hy het dit aan hulle duidelik gemaak datalmal hulle werk kwyt sou wees as die itemnie teen die einde van die volgende dag te-rug geplaas word in die badkamer nie.” No-deloos om te sê, het die verlore sepie vinnigsy pad teruggevind na Madiba se badkamer.

En wanneer hy die hotel na sy besoek ver-laat het, het hy nooit nagelaat om die be-stuur te bedank vir die luukse produkte nie.

“Baie dankie vir u gasvryheid, maar ekhet my eie goed saamgebring,” het hy altydgesê.

Vir Mandela was daar nie ’n grys gebiedas dit kom by eerlikheid nie, sê sy.

Madiba het vas daaraan geglo dat ditmakliker is om jouself te verander, eerderas ander mense. “Hy het altyd gesê dat ons’n gebroke samelewing kan verander deurons eie gedrag te verander.”

La Grange beskryf Nelson Mandela as ’nkomplekse, hardkoppige, maar baie lojalepersoonlikheid. Ook die manier waarop hysy eggenote, Graca Machel, behandel het,het boekdele gespreek.

“Hy het haar met die hoogste respek enbewondering behandel en in 19 jaar het eknie een keer die teendeel gesien nie. Saammet haar was hy werklik gelukkig”.

La Grange het in Junie 2014 haar memoi-res “Good Morning, Mr Mandela” laat pu-bliseer waarin sy vertel van haar lewe saammet Mandela.

Die boek is in Desember van dieselfdejaar aangewys as 2014 se topverkoper inSuid-Afrika.

As a socially driven movement, ExposeIt relies on citizen reports.“The more incidents reported, the more

from her a day after she gave birth to him.Betty Maritz says her heart’s desire is to

meether only childwho shouldbe 64-years-old this year. Maritz tells her heart-wrenching story with desperate longing,saying she will only feel better once theyreunite.“Iwas 19when I fell pregnant.At the time

I lived with a woman in Retreat who tookme in as her own daughter. She eventuallynoticed Iwas pregnant. Iwas already inmysecond trimester,” she says.“She asked who the father was and I told

her. I suggested the guy come meet her aswell but she did not want to hear anythingof it. Not long after, the father of my childdid not contact me anymore,” Maritz says.She says on the day she gave birth she

remembers a midwife assisting with herdelivery at home. “After giving birth I wasso tired and exhausted. All I know is I gavebirth to a boywhohad a distinct birthmark

on his back. After thebirth I was exhausted,my guardian mothersaid we could go thenext day to give mychild’s details at theclinic,” she recalls.She says the next

morning she was wok-en up and told to washher baby as well as hisclothes.“My guardian then

offered to takemy babyto the clinic and havehis details registered. Ican’t read or write so Igave her my baby asshe offered her help,”Maritz says.When her guardian

returned later that

afternoon, she came home drunk andwith-out Maritz’s child. “I asked her where mychild was and all she said was: ‘Wat worryjy vir jou? Jou kind is vrek.’ (Why are youworried? Your child is dead). I couldn’t be-lieve it and I kept asking her where mychild was, but she gave me the same re-sponse each time. Up until today I do notknow what happened to my child on thatday, but I have a strong suspicion that he

was either sold or given away. I just wantmy child back,” Maritz cries.She adds her search for her son never

stopped, but due to too little detail she hashadno luck. “But Iwill continue,” she says.She has since moved to Parkwood.“I feel

like Iwas robbed of being amother.My sonmight be out there thinking I abandonedhim, but I just want to see him so I can tellhim that is not what happened.”

City marathon goes for ggoolldd label

With less than 30 days to go to one ofAfrica’s most prestigious road ra-ces, the Sanlam Cape Town Mara-

thon organisers are gearing up to present aspectacular eventwhen they host the secondedition of the relaunched running festivalon 20 September.

Havingmade anumber of announcementswith 60 days to go, the organisers are pleasedto reveal further information in relation tothis year’s event, as they aim to make histo-ry by becoming the first race in SouthAfricato achieve IAAF Gold label status.

A faster, flatter route has already beenconfirmed, and the course will be discussedin more detail along with any furtherchanges in the build-up to the race.

“Last year there were concerns over theroute which made the race a little slowerthan we had hoped, so this has been one ofthe main focus points ahead of this year’sevent,” says race ambassador Elana Meyer.

“Having earned Silver Label status at ourfirst attempt, we know we are on the righttrack, but there are some areas where we

know we can improve and various tweaksto the route could make a notable differencefor participants hoping to achieve personal

bests.”Meanwhile, after announcing a promising

local field and the first few elite internation-

al entries at the 60-day countdown to theevent, organisers confirmed the line-upwould be further boosted by a number ofglobal stars who would chase the men’s andwomen’s course records set last year byKen-yanWillyKiborKoitile (2:10:45) andEthiopi-an Meseret Mengistu Biru (2:30:57).

The men’s field will include nine IAAFGold Label Status athletes who have run un-der 2:10.00. David Kemboi Kiyeng, who fin-ished third at the 2009 Paris Marathon in2:06:26, holds the fastest personal best in therace,while three othermenhave also dippedunder 2:08:00.

The domestic contingent also includessome of the country’s most accomplishedathletes, including 43-year-old HendrickRamaala (2:06:55 PB), who won the 2004 NewYork Marathon, and 42-year-old ShadrackHoff (2:11:51), a formerSArecordholder over5 000m on the track. Both men have theirsights set on the veterans’ title. Shaun Mei-klejohn (53), who won the Comrades ultra-marathon in 1995, lines up in the masters’division.
