NEWS

There is a huge amount to report this issue, one of the reasons why this issue is coming out a lot later than intended. As our listeners are no doubt aware we have relocated to our new facilities, purpose-built for us and housed in the New Norfolk High School’s Science and Language Centre. The New Norfolk Golf Club has also kindly agreed to let us place a mast and antenna on top of their roof which is now permitting us to transmit at 250 watts of power! We recently held a sausage sizzle and ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially re-launch us from our new premises and unveiled our new official logo and mascot, created for us by cartoonist, Thomas Novotny.

Primary schools in the Derwent Valley have been invited to ask their students to come up with a name for our new mascot. Prizes will also be on offer for the winning entry or entries. So get those thinking caps on kids!

CRACKING THE CODE

What you hear on community radio is governed by the Community Radio Codes of Practice which are available from the Community Broadcasting Association website, www.cbaa.org.au. Each newsletter will focus on one of these Codes.

In this issue the focus is on Code 3: General Programming or more specifically code 3.1.

In general code 3.1 requires community radio stations to not broadcast material that may incite or encourage violence or brutality, mislead or alarm listeners, present the use of illegal drugs or other harmful substances as desirable or present suicide as a solution to life problems.

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT

As our regular listeners will no doubt be aware we provide easy listening programming from the 60s 70s and 80s from 6am until 6pm most days. We also provide a variety of specialty programs and each newsletter we will endeavour to shine a spotlight on one of these.

This issue: Tiarna’s Ute.Tune into 98.9 TYGA FM each Sunday from 12 noon until 2pm to hear what’s playing in Tiarna’s Ute! If you’d like a to hear some contemporary and classic country music, with a taste of rock ‘n’ roll thrown in for good measure, than Tiarna’s Ute might be right up your alley.

MEMBERSHIP

For anyone interested in community radio, membership of the association for 2012/13 remains at only $5. There are opportunities for volunteers in both on-air and off-air roles. Please contact the station on 6261 2888 or email the President at [email protected] if this sounds like you. That’s about it from me and I am pleased to announce that Theron Russell will take over this newsletter for issue 6 due in spring!

Cheers,Steve “Slabs” HalloranPresident
