Tyabb Preschool Inc. 1475 Frankston Flinders Rd, Tyabb PO Box 116, Tyabb 3913 Phone: 03 5977 4919 November, 2012 Term 4, Issue 2 Presidents Preamble Hi All, Thank you to all those parents who attended the AGM meeting last Tuesday night. Summary of AGM: Its been a tough year for both the Committee and staff triggered by a lot of change. Some regulatory change (National Quality Framework, Quality Improvement plan and introduction of 15 Hours Early Learning Education for 4 year olds). Additional change has seen the Preschool follow the trend to replace the role of Director and introduce the role as Educational Leader. 2012 was also compounded by a high turnover of committee members: Fees Officer, Secretary, Vice President, Treasurer, General Assistant and Maintenance Officer. Financial summary: Financially the 2011/2012 has been a difficult year with the Pre- school posting a deficit of $26,312.00. 75% of this deficit is made up from one off payments for outstanding superannuation payments (anomaly identified in previous year) and wages paid to Agency contractors engaged to ensure the Preschool was compliant with the Victorian Early Childhood Teachers and Assistants (VECTA) agreement. But we have survived and most importantly the change has been occurring in the background without the notice of the parents and children (priority No 1). And for that reason alone I must thank everyone involved. The staff have done a fantastic job in making sure the Preschool opens every day and the children and parents are greeted with smiling faces. Betina, Ann-Marie, Sandy and Michelle - you have all done a great job and on behalf of the Committee and parents, thank you for all your efforts. Your are the reason why Tyabb Preschool has such a great reputation within the community. And I must take this opportunity to thank the committee. Penguin Group

Dianne from Wiggerly Worm Dance Company visited the children on Friday the 26th October for a fun afternoon full of music, dance, dress ups and role play. The children were engaged for close

to two hours while they bounced balloons on a large parachute, rode hobby horses around the room, danced with pom poms, dressed up in funny costumes and took part in an obstacle course right at the very end. A fun action packed afternoon with lots of learning taking place without the children even knowing. Things like developing the children’s listening skills, extending concentra-tion, following instructions, copying movements and actions, moving their bodies in different ways, sharing equipment and space, turn-taking and extending their imaginations and creativity .... learning can be so much fun! There has been lots of interest in the new chickens also known as the

chicks-chicks or chickadee’s. The children in Penguin Group were the first to witness the chickens and they watched as Colleen from Henny Penny Chickens set up the incubator and the pen. Although they didn’t get to witness the chickens hatch (as they had all hatched by Friday) they have surely been watching closely as they’ve pecked around the pen. Some children have also had a hold and a gentle pat. We apologise to all the parents whose children are desperate to take the chickens home, they have now all found a family to adopt them.

We look forward to Special Person’s Day (26th November) where the children will get to spend the entire Monday morning session with a loved one at preschool. We wonder who they will bring…………..?Betina and Sandy

A special mention to Leah Chalkitis and her family for all their contribution to the Hastings Bunnings BBQ

last month.

THANK YOU!

Dolphin Group

We know many of the children have dogs at home that they love and are part of their family. But what happens when they meet a dog they don’t know? Lisa from the team at the Responsible Pet Education team came to kinder on October 17th to teach the children about this and had some important lessons to teach. The first one was; No owner, No lead, NO TOUCH! She also explained when not to approach a dog even our beloved dogs

at home like when they are eating, sleeping, if they have pups or when they are stressed or hurt. The children were also taught what to do when they come across a dog they don’t know and they were able to practise what they had learnt with Lisa’s dog, Lucky. Lucky was a beautiful friendly dog and every single child in the group had a turn of patting her. We know many of you have taught your children these valuable lessons at home and we hope that this session has just allowed the children to revisit these. If you would like a copy of the CD or DVD to borrow please see Betina.

Since the visit we have had some interesting guests for Show and Tell like Matilda’s dog Moby who’s a Boxer, Tayler’s lizard Rexy who’s a Bearded Dragon and Jenna’s dog Budda who’s a Fox Terrier

Seal Group

The end of the year is fast approaching and with it things are getting busy in the kinder room. As if they weren’t already!!

To those parents who have handed in their Family section of the Transition Report a BIG thankyou. For those who have not yet done so please do so ASAP. Our handover date for these with the schools is close at hand and I need to finish compiling them.

All families should have received an invitation for our Grandparents Picnic which Seal Group is having on Tuesday 27th November, starting at 12noon until 2pm. We invite our grandparents to come and spend some time with us by bringing in a picnic lunch and having it with their grandchild at kinder. If any grandparents are unable to attend we would also welcome Aunts or Uncles to take their place.

Notices have gone out this week for a couple of final dates, these being for our Concert and also our final session. Times are on these to let everyone know what time proceedings will get underway for both of these.

Last week and this, we have had some new additions to the room. On Monday the 12th November we took delivery of a dozen eggs that were ready to hatch over the following few days, as well as 4 baby chicks that had already hatched. The children have been very fascinated to watch the eggs hatch and the new chicks emerge. Many of the children have also been eager to hold them when able. It really is quite a sight watching the children hold the chicks especially when they start to wiggle around, many of the children do not expect this. All families are welcome to adopt any of the chicks and take them home, see any of the teachers for further information on this.Anne-Marie & Michelle

The children have been putting on dance performances regularly at preschool over the past few weeks. They set up their own stage, set up chairs for the audience, sold tickets from the ticket booth, played music, made up dance routines and we even had some of the boys working on the stage (fixing it) in between each performance. These types of child initiated experiences are so beneficial as the they see their ideas come to life. Not only were the children able to source the things they needed, set up the entire area but were able to play cooperatively with each other with hardly any adult interference. Children are so much more engaged and enthusiastic when they are given the freedom to follow their own ideas and interests.

Dolphin Group witnessed some of the chickens hatching (from Henny Penny Chickens) in the incubator last week and have been watching the chickens closely as they grow. They observed them through the glass in their pen and held them in their laps gently. It has inspired them to do some observational drawings and make their own chickens using clay (for bodies), match sticks (for legs), joggle eyes, shells (for beaks) and feathers (for wings). The chickens have little boxes filled with feathers and paper confetti for them to sit comfortably in….so cute!

We look forward to Grandparents Day next week on Thursday and also our upcoming visit from the Drama Toolbox. As you may have heard the children will be performing in a Circus for their end of year concert and the Drama Toolbox session will be a great warm up for this. Stayed tuned for more information regarding the concert as well as graduation day.Betina and Sandy
