TWR’s International President, Lauren Libby, was recently asked “Is radio still relevant in today’s world?” Asyou might expect, he responded, “Yes, it is! In fact, it is more relevant than ever!” 90% of adults listen to theradio each week in the UK! And, around the world, radio continues to be an effective and impactful tool formission. Lauren went on to make some interesting points which I thought I would share with you:

Radio is inexpensive and accessible. Radio is a free source of encouragement and content. The internetcan be disconnected in a country; however, radio waves can reach people beyond political or digital borders.

Radio influences listeners! The audio nature of the medium helps explain its power to influence thelistener. Radio can set a cultural agenda in which people are encouraged with spiritual programming.

Radio reaches people in their own heart languages. Trust is engendered as people listen in their ownlanguages, thereby increasing the impact of programming. And you don’t need to be able to read, thusbypassing literacy levels. It is a very versatile communication tool for proclaiming the good news of Jesus.

Radio is well-situated to communicate spiritual truth on both a personal level and acommunity level. In many countries where TWR ministers, home churches have been formed based onradio programming.

Radio is positioned for the future! New technology will enable radio to transmit not only audio butalso written materials and even short videos directly into a village context without the internet.

Radio is versatile, inexpensive, easily accessible and understandable. A great tool to reach masses of peoplewith the hope that only Jesus brings!

Thank you for partnering with TWR.

From the Chief Executive Officer, Dr Russell Farnworth.

Power in PersecutionSamir hated the Christian student, Zachariah, who sat next to him so much that he led hisfriends to ambush the boy and beat him nearlyto death.

Zachariah never came back to that school inSudan, but Samir eventually met other believers, accepted Christ and became a pastor. As aresult, his family declared him dead and he wasarrested multiple times.

Years later, though, he attended a conferencewhere he told another pastor about thepersecution he had inflicted as a youth. Thepastor began to cry. It was Zachariah, and he hadbeen praying for Samir for 25 years!

“I was able to understand why I became aChristian,” Samir said. “Not because I was smartand not because there was anything special inme, but because of this guy. I persecuted him; hewas praying for me.”

Samir’s story is one of dozens told in Power in

Persecution, a radio programme producedthrough the extensive contacts of TWR incollaboration with national partners ERF Medienof Germany and TWR Czech. The primarypurposes of the 15-minute episodes are: toenable persecuted believers to share theirtestimonies as encouragement for others insimilar circumstances; to make non-persecutedbelievers aware of the trials faced by theirbrothers and sisters; and to promote concernand prayer for each other.

Featured are the stories of people like Samir;like Alberto, a seminary student who was sent to a labour camp after the Cuban revolution and today serves as TWR’s representativethere; and like Vladimir Lavrinenko, who was told that Christians behind the Iron Curtainshould be imprisoned separately because theytend to lead fellow inmates to Christ. But there are also specialists like Nik and RuthRipken, Thomas Schirrmacher, and Rupert Shortt who analyse the big picture ofpersecution in the world today.

Power in Persecution has been broadcast in Arabic and today is being airedon AM in a local language of Central Asia, where Christians are few andface widespread hostility. Brother Andrew van der Bijl, well-known as“God’s smuggler,” was interviewed for the programme and emphasised asobering but heartening lesson.

“With persecution, there comes great blessing and growth of the church inways that would be totally impossible without it,” Brother Andrew said.

Most of us take radio for granted, listening casually. But for Christians inmany parts of the world, radio is a vital though dangerous source ofultimate truth, friendly encouragement and welcome advice.

That’s the case for Mahdi, who listens to TWR programmes like Power inPersecution in Yemen, ranked on the Open Doors World Watch List ashaving extreme persecution of Christians.

“Your programme helps me like a baby starting to walk,” Mahdi wrote toTWR’s Arabic Ministries. “...Youwere the reason I am now saved!Pray for Yemen, please, and forthe bad times we are goingthrough. Pray for my faith and formy safety because if anyoneknows about [my faith] I could bekilled.”

“The programmes give them thewill to continue and tell themtheir lives are not falling apartbut falling into place, with theLord working in their hearts andminds for his glory!" said TWR’sArabic Ministries leader, whosename is withheld for securityreasons. “We believe the Lordwill turn ashes to beauty.”

Because You Cared: A New Era for Latin America

10

Since 1964, TWR has been broadcasting Gospelprogrammes from Bonaire, but in recent years, appeals for a stronger radio signal have grownlouder from across the region. Listeners on theedges or outside the existing broadcastfootprint have received an inconsistent TWRsignal or nothing at all.

A Cuban listener recently wrote, “Two monthsago, we moved, and in our new house, we cannothear you – the signal arrives very poorly. Weregret the move because of this inconvenience.Do you know if the signal will be improved thisyear?”

In Venezuela many local radio stations thatcarried TWR programming have been closed bythe government, making good coverage fromBonaire especially critical.

And so it is with great delight that we canannounce that on Tuesday 30 January 2018 anew era dawned in Latin America when themost powerful radio station in the WesternHemisphere was inaugurated on the island ofBonaire in the Caribbean.

TWR President Lauren Libby joined ministry

staff, board members, supporters and invitedguests on the island to celebrate the launchingof a 450,000-watt transmitter. When thetransmitter was switched on, the potentialaudience for Gospel broadcasts to places likeCuba, Venezuela and Brazil doubled to 100million. The new signal goes by the name ofShine 800 AM.

Bernard Oosterhoff, station director of TWRBonaire, said, “This week we welcome over 50guests from around the world and many localguests to dedicate the new transmitter to theLord. A project of nearly five years has come toan end. God provided all the skilled people andmeans to buy and install the new transmitter, and we praise him for that.”

As for the effectiveness of the newly upgradedtransmitter: the day after the station launched,TWR Cuba Director Alberto Gonzalez – nowable to listen to TWR from his Havana office –received 40 emails from listeners across Cuba, finally able to clearly hear the broadcasts.

Praise the Lord for the expanded signal fromBonaire, and for the supporters in the UK andaround the world who made it possible.

Fire at TWR Global HQ

Remembering Dick Saundersand Billy GrahamTwo of TWR-UK’s most loved Bible teachershave passed away this year: Dick Saunders inJanuary at the age of 87 and, in February, BillyGraham at the age of 99.

Both men had been part of TWR-UK’s schedulesince the earliest days, and their ministries havehad an immeasurable impact on our listeners inthe intervening decades. Along with years offaithful Bible teaching, Dick and Billy proclaimedthe Gospel through their lives lived in faithfulobedience to Christ.

Some years ago, Dick confided, “I’m not askingthe Lord to give me a long life [but] I would loveto be a gracious old man for people to come toand glean from my years of experience.” Sincethe news of Dick’s death was announced, wehave been deluged with very touching commentsfrom listeners who benefitted from his ministry, which show how faithfully God answered thatprayer.

Billy Graham was quoted as saying, in anadaptation of the words of DL Moody, “Somedayyou will read or hear that Billy Graham is dead.Don’t you believe a word of it. I shall be morealive than I am now. I will just have changed my address. I will have gone into the presence of God.”

You will doubtless join us in thanking God forthe many fruitful years of ministry these mengave in service of their Lord and Saviour, JesusChrist. We also remember in our prayers thefamilies of the two men, particularly BettySaunders, Dick’s wife of over 60 years.

In late December a fire broke out at TWR’s GlobalHeadquarters in Cary, North Carolina. Smoke damage affectedthe whole building, and the area nearest the fire sustainedstructural damage. By God’s grace no one was injured, theministry has continued without a break and supporters havealready contributed the vast majority of the funds to cover thecosts not met by the insurance. The repair work is expected totake until around August, until when the Spanish and Women ofHope teams are in alternative work accommodation, including inwhat used to be the dining room.

You can read more about Dick Saunders’ life and work, and keep up to date with the latest from Cary by going to our website: www.twr.org.uk
