Concept 1: Project Description Our first concept celebrates the individual as a member of a shared community. It consists of 12 sculptures that are each unique in scale and color pattern, while at the same time sharing a common form. The banding patterns are conceptually derived from DNA banding patterns which illustrate on a scientific level just how genetically similar we all are as humans (over 99%). Even though we have the very slightest of genetic differences, we are all dramatically different in a variety of ways: personality, appearance, experience, thought, feeling, emotion, etc. An organically laid out grouping of multiple sculptures will also create interesting sight lines from any direction as one approaches the roundabout. The colored acrylic panels that create the banding patterns are translucent, and the sculptures will be internally lit with slowly evolving color changing LEDs to create dramatic and dynamic lighting effects. We have sculptures with similar lighting effects installed next to a road in Reading, PA, and the lights change slowly enough as to not be a distraction to drivers. Please see included video for an example of the lighting effect. It would also be possible to have the lights remain static. The sculptures will be fabricated out of 1/4” thick aluminum. Aluminum was chosen as its oxidation does not result in deterioration, which makes it a perfect choice for an outdoor work. The translucent panels will be composed of three layers: an outer 1/4” thick clear acrylic, 1/8” thick colored translucent acrylic, and an interior backing 1/8” thick clear acrylic. We have experience fabricating sculptures with these materials and they have proven to hold up well in extreme weather. We will consult with a landscape architect to determine a final landscape plan as well. We envision native plants, potentially tall ornamental grasses. We would also be cognizant of leaving enough space between plantings and sculptures for routine mowing and/or maintenance to occur. Each sculpture will have unique dimensions that range from 8’ tall to 12’ tall and 8” to 14” square width and depth. No two sculptures will have the same dimensions. Concept 1: Infrastructure Requirements Each sculpture will sit on its own concrete footer or pier. The sculptures will have a footplate that gets fastened to the concrete footer via 5/8” diameter threaded rod epoxied into the concrete. The footers will need to be approximately 18” to 24” in diameter and probably extend past the frost line for that location. Should we be awarded the project, we will work with a licensed Maine engineer to provide a sealed foundation plan. The artist team will make

a site visit to Portland in order to determine final locations of each sculpture based on the site lines and underground utilities. Each sculpture will also need an electrical hookup. The LEDs do not draw a large amount of current, and we will consult with an electrician to provide total current draw, number of circuits, potential for 12VDC circuits, photocell, etc. Concept 1: Renderings Final site layout and arrangement will be determined upon completing a site visit to Portland.

Concept 1: Conservation and Maintenance The acrylic is UV stabilized for outdoor use and the acrylic will be very strong (10x stronger than glass for the same thickness) and will resist breakage. Minimal maintenance is required; the aluminum can be washed off with typical cleaning products such as a mild detergent and warm water. The surface will be clear coated to preserve finish for as long as possible. Instructions for cleaning of acrylic will be provided. The LED’s are rated at 50,000 hours of life. The LED’s are easily accessible for replacement by unbolting the top of the sculpture and removing one of the plexiglass panels by sliding it out of the frame. A waterproof strip of RGB LED’s are wrapped around a PVC pole and inserted into the sculpture. The LED’s are commercially available and guaranteed by the artist for five years. In the event the LED’s do need to be replaced after that time, please contact the artist team for consultation, but it is a non-technical process and at this point (this technology is rapidly advancing) would cost less than $200 per sculpture. If you experience any problems with the sculptures, please contact the Artist Team. The Artist Team shall guarantee and repair artwork against all defects of material or workmanship for a period of one year and the LED electronics for five years following installation. The Artist Team shall have the opportunity to comment on and participate in, all repairs and restoration made during their lifetime. The anticipated lifespan of the structural components of the sculptures is at minimum 20-30 years, if not longer. The LED’s are expected to last 13-15 years before replacement at relatively minimal cost. Concept 2: Project Description Our second concept again celebrates individuality, but in a geologic sense. It consists of 7 sculptures that not only share a common theme and aesthetic, but also are each unique in color and form. The forms are inspired by geologic rock formations, which over eons have shaped our world and in particular the beautiful coastline and rock formations of Maine. This installation will also create interesting sight lines from any direction as one approaches the roundabout because of the nature of the layout and multiple sculptures. The colored acrylic facets at the tops of each sculpture are translucent. These sculptures will be internally lit with slowly evolving color changing LEDs to create dramatic and dynamic lighting effects. We have sculptures with similar lighting effects installed next to a road in Reading, PA, and the lights change slowly enough as to not be a distraction to drivers. Please see included sample video of the lighting effects. It would also be possible to have the lights remain static.

The main skeleton of each sculpture will be fabricated out of 1/2” – 5/8” diameter Corten or weathering steel rod. The lower ~2/3 of the sculpture will be sheathed in 1/8” thick Corten steel plate. The translucent acrylic panels will be bolted on to the top ~1/3 of the skeleton. Corten steel is an excellent choice for public art as it achieves a beautiful, even rust patina that does not continue to penetrate and destroy the metal. The translucent panels will be composed of two layers: an outer 1/4” thick clear acrylic and a 1/8” thick colored translucent acrylic.
