How Did It Go?
Last weekend, on the feast of Pentecost, the last day of
the Easter season, the communities of Saint John and
Saint Thomas were able to celebrate an Easter Mass for
the first time this year. Seventy seven days – quite a
significant biblical number – had passed since our last
public Mass back in Lent. It was by all accounts a joy-
ful celebration, even though our joy was tempered by
the realization that many who wanted so much to be
there made a prudent and difficult choice to stay home.
Even more sobering was the memory of over 100,000
lives that were lost to the coronavirus. Even if a loved
one succumbed to another illness, the pandemic meant
that there would be for them no funeral Mass but only a
small circle of family and friends to mourn at their
graveside.
But we had to rejoice. There were many who came,
from 30 to 60 at each of our eight Masses, and careful-
ly, reverently partook of one of Communion. Giving
communion to some of them was a graced moment for
me and my brother priests and deacons. We could see
only their eyes above the masks but their tears spoke
volumes of their faith and love. We long for that day
when we can all gather together safely in God’s house,
as now we are forced to shelter in our homes, apart
from so many members of our family and friends.
For those of you who were not there I want to describe
what happened as best I can. I know you will continue
to pray thoughtfully over the question of when it is
right for you and those you love to come back. It may
help to make you familiar with how we are balancing
delicately a care for safety and reverence for God.
The week and a half that we had from the announce-
ment that public Masses could be celebrated for us in
our Archdiocese until our first Mass was time spent
pouring over all the requirements set down for us to
insure the safety of all who would come. I am grateful
to the staff of our parishes and the many volunteers
who made it possible to open our doors as quickly and
safely as we could. While some parishes sought special
permission to begin Masses on May 23, many more
took time as we did to make ready our churches for our
reopening on Pentecost. Some parishes will wait much
longer. This is a tough decision for every pastor and
every parish. I am grateful for our parish pastoral coun-
cils for their input when I shared details of our plan to
them.
Would it have been wiser to have a longer period of
consultation and planning? I cannot answer that ques-
tion. I can only say that we took into account every bit
of advice and every precaution we could to celebrate
every Eucharist with care and dignity.
So what happens beyond Fr. John’s Ten COVID com-
mandments that you read? If you come to Mass now
you will find six foot distance markings outside and
inside our churches so you know what social distancing
means. You will be greeted by a guide who keeps track
of attendees so we be sure they can be safely accommo-
dated. Another guide points out that there will be noth-
ing in the pews to handle and no passing of the collec-
tion. You deposit your gift as you come or leave; you
take a hymnal to use and to keep. Nothing you touch
should be touched by anyone else. After every Mass
each pew that was used is sprayed with a disinfectant.
And yes, everyone wears a mask including the priest or
deacon during Communion.
There is no congregational singing – to prevent people
breathing out any infection, even through a mask.
Thank God for Holly and Jeremy to give voice to a few
hymns. All responses were recited. And because dis-
tributing Communion required both priest and commu-
nicant to wear a mask, we chose to go out and bring the
Eucharist to people in their pews to make it simpler and
less awkward.
It was wonderful to be in our churches and for those
who went to Saint John’s you got a look at the beauty
that has been restored and enhanced…with more to
come. If you are considering coming to Mass, take the
time and care and prayer you need. I heard from so
many of our faithful people who love the Lord but
know this is not yet the time. The pandemic is still with
us and the risks are real, the consequences can be le-
thal. When you are ready, we want you to know we will
be there to welcome you.
Meanwhile, know that we are praying for you. Every
day Fr. Kevin or Fr. Paul or I am offering Mass some-
where for you. Our seminarians pray with us for you as
well. We will continue to live stream Mass every week-
day at 9:30 and every Sunday at 10 AM.
Please keep in touch via website or Facebook. If we
have your email we send an email letter every week
(check your junk folder as your computer doesn’t know
it’s us!). We need to be one in the Holy Spirit whose
coming we just recalled…and who still makes us one in
Christ! God bless! Fr John

reverencia a Dios.
No puedo responder esa pregunta.
algunos himnos. Todas las respuestas fueron recitadas. Y

Covid do Pe.
voz a algumas canções. Todas as respostas serão recita-
Todos
os dias o Pe. Kevin, o Pe. Paul ou eu estamos oferecendo
missa em algum lugar para você. Nossos seminaristas
também oram conosco por você. Continuaremos a trans-
sulta e planejamento?

PANDEMIC
UPDATE
Dear parishioners and friends of St. John the Baptist
& St. Thomas the Apostle Parishes,
Thank you ever so much for your wondrous
generosity during this challenging viral crisis!
So many of you have contributed significantly with
kindness of prayers and donation support, and this
has allowed our outreach ministry to flourish greatly
throughout these challenging days. We have had to
scale down our offerings in ministry, but, we
continue to provide delicious homecooked food
“to go” each Friday and our collaborators provide
three Sundays per month for bag lunch distribution.
Our brothers and sisters in Christ have remained so
grateful for continued access to food each and every
week.
Our clothing/toiletry center has been closed to the
public, however, needs are taken care of by request
to me as I gather whatever it is that is required.
Showers are limited at this time to allow persons
living on the street to use on a periodic basis only
and laundry access will again start soon. A Medical
Corp. Volunteer has been on hand to appropriately
COVID-clean these areas after use. I have been in
communication with the Peabody Board of Health
Director right from the start of the pandemic, and I
continue to follow all of her suggestions and
recommendations carefully, as well as planning out
the reopening of our church hall for our weekly
lunch and full access to the St. Teresa of Calcutta
Clothing Center. Soon our
outreach brothers and sisters
will be able to benefit from
all facets of our outreach
ministry, and I look forward
to the restart of our program.
On behalf of our volunteers and all those who we
serve, I thank you again for your amazing dedication
and commitment to helping those in need in our local
community. God bless you! Pat Adam
The Ten COVID
Commandments
1. Thou shalt not endanger thyself or someone
else...by going to Mass if you are ill or if you are vulnera-
ble to the corona virus. The Mass obligation is suspended
at this time. We will continue to live stream and post
Mass daily at 9:30 and Sundays at 10 AM.
2. Thou shalt call or sign up soon and come early. We need to know you are coming to Mass. Spaces are
limited. You can call 9:30 -11:30 am, Tuesday-Friday, or
at website! We will follow usual Mass times but there
will be NO mass at 5 PM on Sunday for now. Come ear-
ly to allow time to be seated.
3. Thou shalt wear a face mask. You will not be able
to be admitted to church without a mask, except for chil-
dren or adults who cannot wear masks. I know this is un-
comfortable but required of us to stay safe.
4. Thou shalt keep a distance of six feet. You must
not stand or sit closer than six feet away to others, even
when going to communion or leaving the church.
5. Thou shalt wash thy hands or use a disinfectant
when you use any facilities.
6. Thou shalt not sing or give sign of peace. This is
really hard for us who love to sing and cannot wait to
praise the Lord in song! We will have some music provid-
ed with instrument and cantor. For those perhaps you can
hum.
7. Thou shalt receive communion in thy hand only. When the priest or deacon comes to you, put your palm
open and flat so that he does not touch you. Then remove
your mask and receive the host. And place your mask
over your face again.
8. Thou shalt not congregate with others before or
after Mass except at six feet away. Families who live to-
gether may remain close during and after Mass.
9. Thou shalt take everything with thee. When you
enter may take and keep a hymnal so you can follow the
readings, and take a bulletin when you leave. But do not
leave anything in the pews that others may touch and be-
come infected.
10. Thou shalt be joyful! It is a season of joy in the
risen Lord. You are alive and well. Be patient and be co-
operative. We know it is uncomfortable and we miss
greeting others and singing. But let's enjoy seeing each
other and being with the Lord and receiving his body in
communion.

“Whenever that sacrifice of Christ is
memorialized in the Church, there is an application to a new
moment in time and a new presence in space of the unique
sacrifice of Christ Who is now in glory. In obeying His man-
date, His followers would be representing in an unbloody
manner that which He presented to His Father in the bloody
sacrifice of Calvary. After changing the bread into His Body
and the wine into His Blood: He gave it to
them (Mark 14:22). By that communion they
were made one with Christ, to be offered with
Him, in Him, and by Him. All love craves uni-
ty. As the highest peak of love in the human
order is the unity of husband and wife in the
flesh, so the highest unity in the Divine order is
the unity of the soul and Christ in communion." Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, p. 401-2
The Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Sacrament
of the Eucharist: Basic Questions and Answers
Why do we call the presence of Christ in
the Eucharist a "mystery"?
The word "mystery" is commonly used to refer to something
that escapes the full comprehension of the human mind. In
the Bible, however, the word has a deeper and more specific
meaning, for it refers to aspects of God's plan of salvation
for humanity, which has already begun but will be complet-
ed only with the end of time. In ancient Israel, through the
Holy Spirit God revealed to the prophets some of the secrets
of what he was going to accomplish for the salvation of his
people (cf. Am 3:7; Is 21:28; Dan 2:27-45). Likewise,
through the preaching and teaching of Jesus, the mystery of
"the Kingdom of God" was being revealed to his disciples
(Mk 4:11-12). St. Paul explained that the mysteries of God
may challenge our human understanding or may even seem
to be foolishness, but their meaning is revealed to the People
of God through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit (cf. 1 Cor
1:18-25, 2:6-10; Rom 16:25-27; Rev 10:7). The Eucharist is
a mystery because it participates in the mystery of Jesus
Christ and God's plan to save humanity through Christ. We
should not be surprised if there are aspects of the Eucharist
that are not easy to understand, for God's plan for the world
has repeatedly surpassed human expectations and human
understanding (cf. Jn 6:60-66). For example, even the disci-
ples did not at first understand that it was necessary for the
Messiah to be put to death and then to rise from the dead (cf.
Mk 8:31-33, 9:31-32, 10:32-34; Mt 16: 21-23, 17:22-23,
20:17-19; Lk 9:22, 9:43-45, 18:31-34). Furthermore, any
time that we are speaking of God we need to keep in mind
that our human concepts never entirely grasp God. We must
not try to limit God to our understanding, but allow our un-
derstanding to be stretched beyond its normal limitations by
God's revelation
Hope for the Flowers by Trina Paulus is
universal and timeless, using the metamor-
phosis of the caterpillar into the butterfly
as an example of spiritual transformation
and personal growth for humanity. The
caterpillar represents the plain bread and
wine before Consecration. The cocoon
symbolizes the words of Consecration said by the priest
in persona Christi, and finally, the butterfly signifies the
Body and Blood of Jesus. The butterfly is no longer a
caterpillar due to the phenomenal act of metamorphosis,
much like the words of Consecration during the Liturgy of
the Eucharist literally change the mere bread and wine into
Jesus’ actual Flesh and Blood.

We often begin Mass with the prayer from today's Epistle: "The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellow-
ship of the Holy Spirit be with all of you." We praise the God who has revealed himself as a Trinity, a communion of persons.
Communion with the Trinity is the goal of our worship - and the purpose of the salvation history that begins in the Bible and contin-
ues in the Eucharist and sacraments of the Church. We see the beginnings of God's self-revelation in today's First Reading, as He
passes before Moses and cries out His holy name.
Israel had sinned in worshipping the golden calf (see Exodus 32). But God does not condemn them to perish. Instead He proclaims
His mercy and faithfulness to His covenant. God loved Israel as His firstborn son among the nations (see Exodus 4:22). Through
Israel - heirs of His covenant with Abraham - God planned to reveal himself as the Father of all nations (see Genesis 22:18).
The memory of God's covenant testing of Abraham - and Abraham's faithful obedience - lies behind today's Gospel.
In commanding Abraham to offer his only beloved son (see Genesis 22:2, 12,16), God was preparing us for the fullest possible reve-
lation of His love for the world. As Abraham was willing to offer Isaac, God did not spare His own Son but handed Him over for us
all (see Romans 8:32). In this, He revealed what was only disclosed partially to Moses - that His kindness continues for a thousand
generations, that He forgives our sin, and takes us back as His very own people (see Deuteronomy 4:20; 9:29).
Jesus humbled himself to die in obedience to God's will. And for this, the Spirit of God raised Him from the dead (see Romans
8:11), and gave Him a name above every name (see Philippians 2:8-10). This is the name we glorify in today's Responsorial - the
name of our Lord, the God who is Love (see 1 John 4;8,16). A service of the St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology www.SalvationHistory.com

MOVIE
TO
WATCH
Clare and Francis This epic feature film on the lives
of St. Clare and St. Francis of Assisi was shot on location in Ita-
ly by the Italian film company Lux Vide, the producers of Saint
Rita, Pope John Paul II, and St. John Bosco. This outstanding
movie is unique among films about St. Francis because of the
historical accuracy of the story and its authentic spirit of joy and
piety so characteristic of Francis, as well as the major role
played by Clare, who is given equal stature with him. The two
leads are played by very appealing performers, Mary Petruolo
and Ettore Bassi, who give genuinely inspiring and beautifully
moving performances of the daughter of a patrician family and
the son of a rich merchant who leave everything to follow
Christ. Francis renounces his inheritance of wealth to live the
Gospel and serve the poor and outcasts. Clare reads deep into his
heart and decides to follow him, leaving her home and family to
give herself as a bride of Christ. Both found major religious or-
ders, and together they inspire many to follow their radical call
to live the Gospel. Their impact has reached across the centuries
to change the world.
