Ideas - sharing myown, benefittingfrom others',improving andcollaborating onthem.Networking -getting toknow/speak toteachers from otherspecialisms, agegroups, areas, countries.Support - If I havea bad day, badlesson, strugglewith a resource, etc. I can talk tolike minded (anddifferently minded!)individuals aboutwhat went wrongand how toimprove.Debate - Ifrequently findmyself indiscussions withpeople I disagreewith, or play devil'sadovcate to, andfind that sometimesI change my mind, sometimes Icement my ownposition, sometimes it justforces me to reflectand make aconscious decisionrather than anautomatic one.

Many ideas I havestolen and used inthe curriculum or inmy own personallife, I have madefriends (yes, REALfriends), sharedsome of my ownideas, collaboratedwith others (alwaysa warm glow withthat one), reflectedon (and henceimproveD) my ownpractices andmuch, much more. Both

Don't protect yourtweets - this limitsthe size andstrength of yournetwork - but dome mindful thatwhat you say ispublic and remainprofessionalalthough thatdoesn't meanhumourless).

A desktopapplication isessential to get themost out of Twitter, and a multi-columnclient helps you toget the hang of itquickly. I useSeesmic Desktopbut Tweetdeck isalso a popularalternative.

Right now ...avoiding marking!

Most of the time:1: Quick info -seeing what's newin the eLearning

See many of thereasons above -have been able toget quick answers& keep abreast ofthings - somehoweasier than using

Both

Don't be afraid tostop followingthose that you don'tfeel add to yourlearning; you onlyhave so much time!Tools like

That's way too hardto answer. I haveway more than 5educators that Ifollow - some aregood forsomethings, others

Don't worry ifpeople don't followyou back! (Anddon't worry aboutneeding to followeveryone whofollows you)

Page 7: Twitter Survey Raw Data

field.2: Quick info -asking questions &getting theanswers.3: Replying toothers who postqueries - given thatthey've oftenanswered mine.

Google Reader, though I do still usethe latter. Morepersonal, I guess,as Google readerpicks up whensomeone's updatedtheir blog; Twitterpicks up whensomeone elsethinks it'sinteresting & worthreading.I rarely read blogposts if postertweets - unless Iknow them well &know they're worthreading.

"Tweetdeck" canhelp you by puttingpeople into groups,so that you canread selected typesof posts (thoughnote that fewpeople have poststhat all fall into thesame category -e.g. one post aboutsomething radicalin the eLearningfield, next postabout imminent tripto the beach tomake the most ofthe weather!)

for others. However, off thetop of my head(and, I'm now*actively* excludingthose that I knowhave manyfollowers, and thusare likely to bementioned here )cristinacostflash_ahahJaneChandlerFrancesBellJosieFraser

As I say, that's onlya v. small subset -and I'm trying toavoid those thathave large fanbases (OK, so mylast choice fits intothat category!) - butmostly these arepeople who's postsI find generallyuseful.

Don't worry if ittakes a long time to"get"; just abouteveryone says that.

Don't read toomuch into the rulesthat say "you must"and "never" fortweeting; you'rebound to find onethat says the exactopposite - do whatsuits you. It's *your*learning network, not anyone else's.

I Dream in Twitter

(listen to thepodcasthttp://www.box.net/shared/static/gqkaej08ww.mp3)

I dream in Twitterin 140 charactersthat cut off mythoughts beforethey are completeand then I wonder, why 140?Ten more letterswould serve merightas I write aboutwhat I am doing atthat momentin time, connecting acrossthe world with somany othersshackled by 140characters, too,and I remainamazed at howdeep the brevitycan be.

I find it unsettling toeavesdrop onconversationsbetween two

when you can onlyread oneand it startles me tothink that someoneelse out therehas put their ear tomy wordsand wondered thesame about me.Whose eyes arewatching?

Twitter is both anexpanding universeof tentacles andhyperlinks thatdraw you inwith knowledge andexperienceand a shrinkingneighborhood ofsimilar voices, echoing out yournamein comfortablesilence.

I dream in Twitterin 140 characters, and that is what Iam doingrightatthismoment.

Sharelots of links to sitesthat you havefound interesting -don't be someonewho just tweetsabout daily tasks -if you want to beprofessional - tweetprofessionally.

Depends on whattype of network youwant to create...

It can be hard tobreak in at thebeginning - so bepatient and connectwith other beginnertweeters so thatyou can begintogether :+)
