The World Economic Forum has become one of the most important global events with close more than 400 journalists reporting and 2,500 participants sharing snapshots via social networks such as Twitter and Instagram.1

Communication from the Annual Meeting 2014 in Davos was mainly visual. The Forum set up a special @WEFPics Twitter account, posting the best pictures from the official photographers.2

The Forum also set up a special @WorldEconomicForum Instagram account, sharing behind the scenes pictures from the meeting.

Even before the meeting had started the World Economic Forum was buzzing on social networks, namely on Twitter.By the end of the four day meeting there had been:31,641 online news items. 2,570 TV spots. 906 videos. 195,417 tweets. 68% more coverage than 2013.6

A snapshot of the blank Davos booklet pages of Madrid Mayor Ana Botella and Spanish Minister Jos Manuel Soria went viral in Spain and became one of the most shared pictures on Twitter.8

As in 2013 the Forum had set up a giant 8-metre wide Social Media Wall in the heart of the Congress Centre to capture the participant buzz. On the wall the Forum shared pictures, the live stream from key plenaries and tweets from participants.9

The wall featured a leader board of the most active and the most retweeted Davos tweeps.In 2014 more than 1,000 of the 2,500 Davos participants had personal Twitter accounts.In comparison in 2008 there were only 23 participants on Twitter.10

The wall was noticed by numerous Davos tweeps, including ISO Secretary General Rob Steele.11

The Social Media wall also featured a leaderboard with the 20 best connected participants, based on mutual follows.AP journalist John Heilprin topped the list.12

The most active Davos tweeps were the Mexcian President, Enrique Pea Nieto, EU Commissioner Neelie Kroes and the Indonesian Minister of Trade.The key trtending themes among the tweeting participants were jobs, europe and digital according to a KPMG visualization of the Twitter activity.13

One of the most interesting aspects of Davos 2014 was that participants in the audience AND even panellists were actively taking pictures using their smartphones.14

Of course, many participants snapped pictures of the global superstars such as actor Matt Damon.15

UNFCCs Christiana Figueres said that the issue of climate change has never been higher in Davos as she is being interviewed by German TV in the snow.26

During the conference he posted a picture of himself with Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves and Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt.37

Others had a faster commute such as Israels President Shimon Peres whose staff posted this picture of a thoughful Peres in the helicopter on his way to Davos.The staff iof UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon posted a similar picture with Ban leaving Davos.43

At the end of the four days of workshops and meetings most participants were simply Davosed out as Suma Chakrabart, the head of the EBRD put it on Twitter.44
