The Twins’ journey into the world….

• The case talks about a couple that was living in California. The wife was 6 months pregnant with twins.

• The twins, Emmy and Maddy, were due on Nov. 16, but the wife’s water broke 13 weeks early!!!

• It was a complicated case of premature , multiple – birth pregnancy.

• The wife had to be rushed to the hospital in rough weather(as hurricane Helix was approaching).

On reaching the hospitalIn the emergency dept.

• The husband was told to leave the wife with the triage nurse by the security guard

• The wife’s encounter with the triage nurse was short and sweet

• However, the orderly she met in the emergency dept. told her “ no way (she was) having a baby that early that(would) survive” .

In the the maternity ward

• The maternity ward was located on the 3rd floor.

• Here the wife was attended by a very nervous doctor( Dr. Baker’s assistant).

• Dr. Baker arrived late ( between 7 and 7:30 am) and informed the husband that if the labor pains subsided, they would deliver the babies 10 days later.

• However, at 8:30 am, Dr. Baker informed that the twins would be delivered that day itself by caesarean section.

In the delivery room

• The first of the twins , Emma, was born at 9:15 am , followed by the second, Maddy, at 9:16 am.

On the fourth floor• The next 4 days were spent by the wife in a private room on the fourth floor where the quality of care was sporadic.

Page 6: Twins Case 1

In the NICU• It was located on the 4th floor and provided care for

premature babies and for full –term babies requiring special care.

• Throughout the girls’ 7 weeks stay in the NICU the quality of care was exceptional.

• As for the babies’ progress , some days were good and some weren’t that good.

It was located in a converted patient room in the back corner of the second floor.

It was a big letdown!!!
