SCHOOL ATTENDANCE: At TPMS, we believe there is no substitute for school attendance. While occasional absences are necessary, when students are not present in the classroom to actively engage in learning and essential experiences that deepen understanding, they do not gain the full benefit of the school educational program.

STUDENT ABSENCE POLICY: Under California Education Code 48200, each person between the ages of 6 and 18 years of age is subject to a compulsory full-time education. If your child is going to be absent from school, please notify the TPMS school office as early as possible and report the absence. Our Attendance Hotline number is (858) 668-2730 and can be called at any time, day or night. Any unreported absences will be recorded as truancies, and grades may be negatively impacted.

MAKE-UP WORK/QUIZZES/TESTS:

Students with excused absences shall be allowed to complete all assignments and tests missed during the absence and shall receive full credit if the work is completed within a reasonable time (usually equivalent to the number of days of the absence). Please check with individual teachers for their specific classroom policies regarding absences.

Page 4: Twin Peaks Middle School - Poway Unified School District · At Twin Peaks, all students are expected to be in class on time. Unexcused tardies result when a student arrives to school

4

EXCUSED ABSENCES: A pupil absent from school under excused reason listed under California Education Code 48205 will be allowed to complete all assignments and tests missed during the absence that can be reasonably provided and, upon satisfactory completion within a reasonable period of time, will be given full credit upon completion. The teacher of any class from which a pupil is absent will determine the tests and assignments, and they will be reasonably equivalent to, but not necessarily identical to, the tests and assignments that the pupil missed during the absence.

SCHOOL ATTENDANCE POLICIES School begins at 8:27 a.m. and ends at 3:10 p.m. each day except for late start Thursday. Those hours are 9:15 a.m. to 3:10 p.m. You should not arrive earlier than 8:00 a.m. or 8:45 a.m. on Thursday and need to be off campus by 3:25 p.m. as supervision is not provided during these times. Disciplinary action may be taken against students consistently loitering on campus after 3:25 p.m. Twin Peaks is a closed campus and students are to remain on school grounds until the end of the school day.

LATE ARRIVAL TO SCHOOL: When arriving late to school please sign in at the front

office. A note or telephone call is necessary for an excused tardy. If you are

accompanied by a parent they will need to sign you in at the Attendance Office even if

you are arriving during lunch or RAM. When arriving late to school because of a doctor or

dental appointment, a note from the doctor is suggested. This will “medically” excuse you

and the absence will not count against you.

DEPARTURE FROM SCHOOL: If you have to leave campus for any reason, you will

need to first obtain an Off Campus Pass from the office. Parents can either send their

student to the office before school starts with a note from home or call the attendance 24-

hour hotline at (858) 668-2730. Have a parent sign the note and state the time and

reason you will be leaving. Show your Off Campus Pass to your teacher, who will then

release you from class to meet your parent in the office at the designated time. Parents

must sign you out on the SIGN-OUT log in the Attendance Office. Parents: Please avoid

checking your student out during their lunch period or the last 30 minutes of the

day.

REPORTING ABSENCES:: To clear an absence, parents are requested to report your absence on the 24-hour Attendance Hotline at 858-668-2730 within 24 hours. If your absence has been cleared, upon returning to school, you may report directly to class. If your parent has not called the hotline to report your absence, you must bring a signed and dated note from a parent stating the reason for your absence, and receive a readmit slip. Parents of students with excessive absences will be requested to meet with school administration to review guidelines for excused absences and the importance of regular school attendance and participation of the school educational program.

Please note that you have the option of receiving alerts when your child is tardy for school or a class. See the Attendance and Grade e-mail notification opt in form on our website homepage. OCIS CONTRACTS (TRIPS):

At TPMS, we believe there is no substitute for classroom instruction. However, if an absence from school for personal reasons cannot be avoided, you can pick up an Off Campus Independent Study contract from the attendance office. These OCIS contracts are for a MINIMUM of 5 consecutive days and must be requested AT LEAST 5 school days in advance of the absence.

INTER/INTRADISTRICT AGREEMENTS:

School districts of San Diego (Inter) and schools within PUSD (Intra) establish agreements annually which provide for an exchange of pupils. Inter/Intradistrict transfers may be revoked if the student does not maintain satisfactory attendance, citizenship, or scholarship. Questions should be addressed to Student Attendance and Discipline.

VISITING THE OFFICE:

Students need a pass to go to the office, unless it is an emergency.

CAMPUS VISITORS:

Visitors to the school campus will need to sign in at the front office and obtain a visitor pass. Visitors are not allowed on campus without permission from the office. Students from other schools will not be allowed on campus to visit for the day or any portion of the day.

TARDY POLICY:

At Twin Peaks, all students are expected to be in class on time. Unexcused tardies result when a student arrives to school or class without a note from a parent, a teacher, or a staff member. Students are allowed 2 unexcused tardies per quarter.

COUNSELING SERVICES

A comprehensive counseling program is available to all students and parents to help students with academic, social/emotional, and personal concerns. Students are welcome to visit the counselors where they may submit an “Appointment Request” slip to the counseling assistant. The counselor will then contact the student.

Student Request for Schedule Change: Forms are available in the Counseling Center and should be filled out and submitted according to the timeline set by the counseling office. Schedule change requests may be made in accordance with the following guidelines:

Basic Education class changes are rarely possible because of the complexity of the schedule.

There will be no elective changes if a student is scheduled into a class he/she requested.

Changes can only be made, as space is available. Students cannot move from a smaller class to a larger class.

Major disruptions to the present schedule will not be allowed.

Request forms must be signed by parent/guardian.

BUS TRANSPORTATION Regular Bus: Bus drivers are responsible for student safety. All TPMS and PUSD rules are in effect at the bus stop before and after school, as well as during your ride. Please see transportation guidelines for specific bus regulations. Failure to comply with all bus safety rules may result in students being suspended from the bus. You need a note from your parent, signed by office personnel to be able to ride a different bus or get off at a different stop.

Activity Bus: We have after school activity buses, Monday thru Thursday, which leave at 4:20 p.m. In order to ride the activity bus, student must be involved in a school sponsored after school activity and obtain an activity bus pass from the supervising teacher. All students must remain on school grounds until the activity bus arrives. Students cannot stay after school unless a teacher supervises them in an organized activity.

NO ACTIVITY BUS ON FRIDAYS

LOST AND FOUND:

Small items (wallets, cell phones, etc.) are located in the school office.

“Lost and Found” clothing is located outside the LRC.

CELL PHONES/ELECTRONIC DEVICES:

Cell phones/Electronic devices should be brought to school at your own risk. TPMS is not responsible for lost, damaged, or stolen devices.

Phone/device must remain OFF (not on SILENT/VIBRATE) and concealed from 8:27 a.m. until 3:10 p.m. This includes instructional time, lunch, and nutrition breaks. If a phone call needs to be made during school hours, come to the office and ask permission.

You may only use phone/devices during class time with teacher permission. Cell Phone Consequences:

Violation of the school cell phone policy will result in confiscation of the phone by school staff. A second violation requires a parent to come to school and pick up the phone.

Repeated violations may result in loss of phone on campus.

LIBRARY (LRC) The library is open Monday-Wednesday and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (Thursdays 9:10 - 4:00p.m.). You are welcome to use the library before school, break, lunch and after school. During class time and RAM time a pass from your teacher is required.

ID card is required for checking out library materials.

Food, drinks and gum are not allowed in the library or computer lab.

Cell phones/electronic devices are only to be used with permission.

All textbooks must be covered. (Paper or TPMS Book Sox)

You are responsible for keeping books in good conditions and for any costs to replace damaged, lost or stolen items. You must have no outstanding items or bills in order to participate in end of year activities.

ID CARDS:

Student ID cards are a means of identifying a student as a member of TPMS. Students must carry ID cards with them on campus at all times and at school related activities. For identification, students must present a current ID card to check out materials from the library as well as other materials. A current Twin Peaks ID is required to purchase tickets for school related activities. Replacement cards are available from the library for $5. DELIVERIES TO STUDENTS;

In an effort to encourage students to become more independent, self-sufficient, Twin Peaks does not encourage delivery of forgotten lunches, P.E. clothes, homework, non-emergency messages, or other items. However, students may check the cabinets at the front desk for forgotten items during break or lunch.

BULLETIN:

Students have the opportunity to read or listen to the bulletin on TPMS-TV each day. Forms for submission of bulletin requests are available in the reception area. The bulletin is also available daily on the school website.

EQUAL ACCESS

The Board of Education, acknowledging the value of student involvement in extra-curricular activities, including curriculum clubs, student service organizations, and other non-curriculum related organizations, adopts the policy supporting these activities on secondary school campuses. This policy implements the Equal Access Act as enacted by Congress in 1984. The intent of the policy is to allow secondary school students to meet on their campuses for a limited open forum for religious, political or philosophical discussions. Implementation of the Equal Access Act does not signify District sanction or endorsement of any particular religious, philosophical, or political belief discussed in these limited open forums. Nothing herein shall be construed to limit the authority of the school, its agents or employees, to maintain order and discipline on school premises, to protect the well being of students and faculty and to assure that attendance of students at meetings is voluntary.

Prepayment for meals is encouraged because it speeds up service and eliminates cash handling (including lost and forgotten lunch money). To avoid the hassle of sending cash each day, we highly recommend using one of our easy prepayment systems: • Use a pre-pay envelope to send cash or a check payable to PUSD Food and Nutrition Department (Please include student’s name and ID number on all checks and pre-pay envelopes). • Make a credit card payment online at www.schoolpaymentsolutions.com Students are required to show their Student ID card to access their accounts. Parents/guardians who cannot afford to pay for their children’s meals should apply for free or reduced price meals in accordance with federal regulations. Please visit the Food & Nutrition Departments website at www.powayusd.com/nutrition for more information.

Created by Kirby Rideout of Collin County Community College,

this is a template for formatting a research paper in MLA format. The paper

has one-inch margins all around. Each page has a header of last name and

page number. The paper will be double-spaced throughout, no extra space

between sections or paragraphs. The entire paper, including the heading and

title, needs to be in the same type and size of font.

How to create top right

header:

1. Go to “Insert” tab 2. Click “Header”- Adjust font to right alignment-type last name 3. Under “Insert” click “Page

Number”- Right top page numbers

In MLA format, you document your research in parenthetical

citations. This allows you to “acknowledge your sources by keying brief

parenthetical citations in your text to an alphabetical list of works that

appears at the end of the paper” (Gibaldi 142). Notice that in this brief

citation the period goes after the parenthesis.
