In my practice as a dental hygienist, I affirm my personal and professional commitment to improve the oral health of the public, to advance the art and science of dental hygiene, and to promote high standards of quality care. I pledge continually to improve my professional knowledge and skills, to render a full measure of service to each patient entrusted to my care, and to uphold the highest standards of professional competence and personal conduct in the interest of the dental hygiene profession and the public it serves.

DENTAL HYGIENE OATH

HEALTH PROFESSIONOaths

With full knowledge of the responsibilities I am undertaking,

I pledge to care for my patients with all of the knowledge, skills, and understanding that I possess, without regard to race, color, creed, politics, or social status.

I will spare no effort to conserve meaningful life, to alleviate suffering, and to promote health.

I will refrain from any action which might be harmful to the quality of life or health of those I care for.

I will respect, at all times, the dignity and religious beliefs of patients under my care, and hold in professional confidence all the personal information entrusted to me.

I will endeavor to keep my professional knowledge and skills at the highest level and give my support and cooperation to all members of the healthcare team.

With full awareness of my qualifications and limitations, I will do my utmost to maximize the potential of the nursing profession and to uphold and advance its standards.

NURSING OATH

I solemnly pledge to dedicate my life to the care of the sick, the promotion of health, and the service of humanity. I will practice respiratory therapy with conscience and in truth. The health and dignity of my patients will be my first concern. I will seek constantly to grow in knowledge, understanding, and skill and will work with my colleagues to promote and advance all that is worthy in the profession. I make this pledge freely and upon my honor.

RESPIRATORY THERAPY OATH

Be it pledged as an Emergency Medical Technician, I will honor the physical and judicial laws of God and man. I will follow that regimen which, according to my ability and judgment, I consider for the benefit of patients and abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous, nor shall I suggest any such counsel. Into whatever homes I enter, I will go into them for the benefit of only the sick and injured, never revealing what I see or hear in the lives of men unless required by law.

I shall also share my medical knowledge with those who may benefit from what I have learned. I will serve unselfishly and continuously in order to help make a better world for all mankind.

While I continue to keep this oath unviolated, may it be granted to me to enjoy life, and the practice of the art, respected by all men, in all times. Should I trespass or violate this oath, may the reverse be my lot.

So help me God.

PARAMEDIC OATH

THE COLLEGE MACEA medieval weapon, the mace is now used as a symbol of authority. The Vermont Tech mace was designed and constructed in 1986 by Paul Calter, Professor Emeritus. The wood turning was provided by the Randolph Division of Ethan Allen, Inc. The mace was constructed from the wood of an apple tree that stood in the college orchard since the early 1920s.

On the one-meter mace, the ratio of the length of the head to the handle is the same as the ratio of the handle to the whole, thus dividing the mace by the Golden Section. Since ancient times, this ratio was felt to give the most perfect proportions. The Golden Section also appears in the ratio of the orb to the head, and in the spacing of the sections of the head.

Mounted on an ellipsoid of revolution, the orb is encircled by five brass meridians, one for each of the Vermont State Colleges. Further down, two brass bands are engraved “Vermont Technical College” and “Excellence in Technology.” A third band at the end of the shaft bears the maker’s name and the date. Carved on a middle band are several trapezoids which have the same proportions as the state outline, each showing the location of a Vermont State College.

Each wooden ring bears a computer-coded date from Vermont Tech’s history: 1866, the year the Orange County Grammar School became the Randolph State Normal School; 1910, the date the Vermont School of Agriculture got its start; 1957, the year the school became the Vermont Agricultural and Technical Institute; and 1962, the year the institute was renamed Vermont Technical College.

ACADEMIC ATTIRECommencement ceremonies call to mind the history of the ancient university. The degrees and regalia associated with the ceremonies began in the medieval universities of Europe, where the gowns were everyday dress. They provided for their wearers not only distinction, but also warmth during long hours of study in poorly heated buildings.

Today, however, academic attire is seen only at formal affairs, such as commencements, dedications, and inaugural ceremonies.

From medieval practice, academic dress has three items: a cap, a gown, and a hood. Understanding of an academic costume code, drafted by an intercollegiate commission in 1895, helps in identifying the degree the wearer holds, the university that awarded it, and the course of study it represents.

Bachelor’s degree recipients wear a black gown with long open sleeves. The master’s degree gown has a long closed sleeve hanging below the elbow. Three bars of velvet on a full sleeve distinguish the doctoral gown.

The academic hood is the identifying symbol of the degree. The hood can be distinguished by both length and color. The bachelor’s hood measures three feet, the master’s hood measures three and one-half feet, and the doctoral hood measures four feet. The color of the velvet edging, which is wider for degrees higher than the bachelor’s, indicates the field of study. The lining shows the official colors of the institution that awarded the degree. The hood is worn so that a large part of the lining is visible.

The most frequently seen colors are white for arts and letters; golden yellow for science; pink for music; dark blue for philosophy; purple for law; scarlet for divinity; green for medicine; light blue for education; sapphire blue for business; orange for engineering; brown for art and architecture; turquoise for continuing studies; grey for general studies; and apricot for nursing.

The black mortarboard cap with tassel is worn with every gown, except where omitted by institutional tradition. Those holding doctorates wear gold tassels, while holders of bachelor’s and master’s degrees generally wear black tassels.

Vermont Tech’s honors students are distinguished by gold tassels. Members of honor societies wear a cord or sash representing their honor society. Students graduating with a 4.0 grade point average are recognized with a pewter medallion. Vermont Tech baccalaureate candidates wear a black hood with green and gold edging.

VERMONT TECHNICAL COLLEGEHistory

Vermont Technical College is one of the five member institutions of the Vermont State Colleges system.

In Public Act No. 1 of 1866, the Vermont legislature established in Randolph, Johnson, and Castleton the first public schools in Vermont devoted to the education of teachers. The Randolph State Normal School served in this capacity until 1910, when the legislature determined the need for a state agricultural school and established the Vermont School of Agriculture at the Normal School site.

Over its long years of service, the Vermont State School of Agriculture graduated many Vermonters who distinguished themselves with numerous and notable contributions in the areas of agriculture and government.

In response to evolving educational needs, technical courses were added to the offerings of the school in 1957, and a new name – Vermont Agricultural and Technical Institute – reflected this expanding mission. The Vermont Agricultural and Technical Institute (VATI) was the first technical institute in Vermont, with an initial enrollment of approximately 75 students.

By act of the 1961 Legislature, VATI and the state teacher colleges (Castleton, Johnson, and Lyndon) were placed under the control of a newly-created public corporation known as Vermont State Colleges. Community College of Vermont joined the other state colleges in 1975. The name VATI was changed to Vermont Technical College on July 1, 1962, and the college was authorized to grant Associate of Applied Science degrees. The Associate of Engineering degree was first granted in 1965.

Another milestone was reached on May 7, 1993, when the Vermont State Colleges Board of Trustees voted approval for Vermont Technical College to offer its first baccalaureate-level degree program in Architectural Engineering Technology.

Students may now enroll in 15 additional baccalaureate programs leading to a Bachelor of Science degree in: Applied Business Management, Business Technology & Management, Computer Engineering Technology, Computer Information Technology, Computer Software Engineering, Construction Management, Dental Hygiene, Diversified Agriculture, Electrical Engineering Technology, Electromechanical Engineering Technology, Entrepreneurship, Manufacturing Engineering Technology, Nursing, Professional Pilot Technology, and Renewable Energy.

In 2015, Vermont Tech’s NEASC accreditation was updated to include the offering of master’s degrees with the launch of its Master of Science in Software Engineering. The college also began offering more certificate programs in allied health, agriculture and computer science.

Small college. Big outcomes.
