Fr John writes: Thank you so much for your lovely warm welcome. It is great to be here. Please bear with me as I sele into my new home with you here at Fareham & Portchester and find my feet. I am really looking forward to geng to know you all, in me (but be aware, I am terrible at remembering names!) Some of you may remember me from 1989 when I served here for a year as a Student with Cn. David Hopgood many moons ago. I celebrated my Silver Jubilee this year in June. I am here to serve you as best I can. You may be aware that I will be here on my own in the Parish, with no Assistant Priest. I am, however, very grateful for the ongoing support of the rered resident Clergy who will be helping me as they are able. As many of the Priests these days, I do have several other hatswithin the Diocese that Id like to share with you as this will directly impact how and when I will be available for the Parish & Parish School. Firstly, I am the current (and only) R.C. Chaplain at H.M.P. Winchester and I am called to serve the men in the prison on a Saturday. I have been doing this for about 6 years now. I go into the Prison early in the morning and celebrate Mass. Then it is my job to be out on the wings and to deal with all other requests for the Sacraments or Pastoral & Spiritual support. I will be back in the Parish in me to celebrate the Vigil Mass at St Marys. Bishop Philip is, and has been (for the past year) trying to relieve me of this duty. When he is able to find a replacement, it will take about 6 months for that person to obtain the required high level Security clearance. Therefore, it looks likely that I will be connuing this for the foreseeable future. This will mean that the Saturday morning Mass at 9.30am and Confessions, wont be possible, at least for the me being. However, I will be available for the Sacrament of Reconciliaon during the morning when we have the First Friday Devoons, and from 6-7pm on a Friday evening for the other Fridays in the month (i.e. on the 2 nd , 3 rd , 4 th Fridays), or at other mes by appointment. Secondly, I am the new Vocaons Promotor for the Diocese. Bishop Philip has moved me here to Fareham because of this new role as it will involve frequent meengs with both him and Fr Gerard Flynn, the Vocaons Director. This promoon role will involve me working with the young people in our Schools, Colleges, Universies and, of course, raising the profile of all Vocaons within our parishes as well as working with the Seminaries and aending other naonal events. It is my intenon to try and keep most of the vocaons work to a Thursday, if this can be arranged, and I will be hosng a monthly Friday evening gathering for seekers’. For one weekend a month I have been asked to travel around the Diocese and talk at other parishes and be with them for their weekend Masses. I am trying to arrange a regular supply cover for this rotaon at the moment so that there is some stability here for the parish. Mrs Clare Ryan has been employed by the Diocese, on a full me basis, to assist me with this role and she will be based here in Fareham. Some of you may know Clare from the many years she worked at Park Gate as a Pastoral Assistant. Please pray for us as we undertake this new challenge. Creang a culture of vocaon and intenonal discipleship in the Diocese will have a posive impact for us all. However, without a surge in vocaons to the Priesthood, the Diocese will struggle to maintain the current model. I will share more of this with you in me. Thirdly, I am the Diocesan Administrator for the Lile MSecular Clergy New Common Fund, assisng our rered clergy. Lastly, Bishop Philip has appointed me the Co- ordinang Pastor, once again, for our Solent Pastoral Area. Mr Marn Ryan, as you know, has gone to work with Fr PJ in Portsmouth and we are acvely recruing for someone to fill this posion. I am very grateful to Miss Holly Phillips who has stepped in to help me during this interim period. I am sure you will all help her to keep things running as smoothly as possible. Thank you for all you give to our community and mission here and I am looking forward to walking alongside you as we seek to make disciples of all the naons (Mt. 28). Please keep me in your prayers, and Fr PJ too, as he seles into his responsibilies in the Cathedral Parish. A.M.D.G. Thank you so much for your lovely warm welcome. It is great to be here. Please bear with me as I settle into my new home with you here at Fareham & Portchester and find my feet. I am really looking forward to getting to know you all, in time (but be aware, I am terrible at remembering names!) Some of you may remember me from 1989 when I served here for a year as a Student with Cn. David Hopgood many moons ago. I celebrated my Silver Jubilee this year in June.

I am here to serve you as best I can. You may be aware that I will be here on my own in the Parish, with no Assistant Priest. I am, however, very grateful for the ongoing support of the retired resident Clergy who will be helping me as they are able. As many of the Priests these days, I do have several ‘other hats’ within the Diocese that I’d like to share with you as this will directly impact how and when I will be available for the Parish & Parish School.

I will be back in the Parish in time to celebrate the Vigil Mass at St Mary’s. Bishop Philip is, and has been (for the past year) trying to relieve me of this duty. When he is able to find a replacement, it will take about 6 months for that person to obtain the required high level Security clearance. Therefore, it looks likely that I will be continuing this for the foreseeable future. This will mean that the Saturday morning Mass at 9.30am and Confessions, won’t be possible, at least for the time being. However, I will be available for the Sacrament of Reconciliation during the morning when we have the First Friday Devotions, and from 6-7pm on a Friday evening for the other Fridays in the month (i.e. on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th Fridays), or at other times by appointment.

Secondly, I am the new Vocations Promotor for the Diocese. Bishop Philip has moved me here to Fareham because of this new role as it will involve frequent meetings with both him and Fr Gerard Flynn, the Vocations Director. This promotion role will involve me working with the young people in our Schools, Colleges, Universities and, of course, raising the profile of all Vocations within our parishes as well as working with the Seminaries and attending other national events. It is my intention to try and keep most of the

vocations work to a Thursday, if this can be arranged, and I will be hosting a monthly Friday evening gathering for ‘seekers’. For one weekend a month I have been asked to travel around the Diocese and talk at other parishes and be with them for their weekend Masses. I am trying to arrange a regular supply cover for this rotation at the moment so that there is some stability here for the parish. Mrs Clare Ryan has been employed by the Diocese, on a full time basis, to assist me with this role and she will be based here in Fareham. Some of you may know Clare from the many years she worked at Park Gate as a Pastoral Assistant. Please pray for us as we undertake this new challenge. Creating a culture of vocation and intentional discipleship in the Diocese will have a positive impact for us all. However, without a surge in vocations to the Priesthood, the Diocese will struggle to maintain the current model. I will share more of this with you in time.

Thirdly, I am the Diocesan Administrator for the ‘Little M’ Secular Clergy New Common Fund, assisting our retired clergy. Lastly, Bishop Philip has appointed me the Co-ordinating Pastor, once again, for our Solent Pastoral Area.

Mr Martin Ryan, as you know, has gone to work with Fr PJ in Portsmouth and we are actively recruiting for someone to fill this position. I am very grateful to Miss Holly Phillips who has stepped in to help me during this interim period. I am sure you will all help her to keep things running as smoothly as possible.

Thank you for all you give to our community and mission here and I am looking forward to walking alongside you as we seek to make disciples of all the nations (Mt. 28). Please keep me in your prayers, and Fr PJ too, as he settles into his responsibilities in the Cathedral Parish.
