From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,

Capital Campaign Project: It is indeed heartening to see our efforts having borne fruit. All this is possible thanks to your generous donations and good will. St. Veronica can accomplish even such big projects if we set our hearts on them. The uppermost feeling in me is that of gratitude to God for having guided us through this project, for giving us the most dedicated coordinators in Tammi Grigg, Sharon Oosterman, and Terri Ciardella, and for inspiring so many parishioners to be participants in this project. An amazing thing about this project is that we accomplished it without hiring a professional company to run it. Imagine how much it would have cost us! And at the end of it all, we wouldn’t have been sure of the success of it. The lights in the newly-paved upper parking lot are being installed. You witness the new beautiful landscape in front of the church. The new base of St. Francis of Assisi statue looks wonderful. We could just stand there and quietly pray the prayer of the most beloved saint in whose name our town is named. A laby-rinth has been installed. We could walk it slowly to move toward the center of our life---God---by letting go of certain things and slowly getting back to our lives with a different perspective on life and all that it brings. The area behind the classrooms toward the rectory has been for a long time in a bad, uneven condition. It has all been smoothened to make it safe for school children. The drainage problems in that area have been addressed. God’s blessings in all these works have been bountiful and amazing.

Jubilee Year of Mercy: Are you aware that Pope Fran-cis has declared an Extraordinary Holy Year which will begin on December 08, 2015, the Feast of the Immacu-late Conception, and conclude on November 20, 2016, the Feast of Christ the King? Pope Francis elaborates the theological understanding of God’s mercy, explaining the role of mercy in the life of people and of the Church, who are both the beneficiaries and the witnesses to God’s mercy in the world. “The mercy of God is not an abstract idea, but a concrete reality through which he reveals his love as that of a father or a mother, moved to the very depths out of love for their child,” the Pope writes. “Mercy is the very foundation of the Church’s life,” he continues. “The Church’s very credibility is seen in how she shows merciful and compassionate love.” He recalls that the motto of the Holy Year is “Merciful like the Father.” “Wherever the Church is pre-sent, the mercy of the Father must be evident,” he writes. “Wherever there are Christians, everyone should find an oasis of mercy.”

Practical Suggestions of the Pope for the Year of Mercy: Go on pilgrimage as an “impetus to conver-

sion”; do not judge or condemn but forgive and give, avoiding gossip, envy and jealousy; have a heart open to the fringes of society and bring consolation, mercy and solidarity to people who live in precarious situa-tions; take up the corporal and spiritual acts of mercy with joy; and observe the “24 Hours for the Lord” initi-ative, which encourages prayer and the sacrament of reconciliation, in every diocese during Lent.

Word of God: In Joshua, a choice between serving the Lord and serving the false gods is offered. As for Josh-ua, he will only serve the Lord. Do we have our own little gods that we worship? Which are our idols that take us away from the true God, away from love, fami-ly, faith, and happiness? In the second reading, Paul speaks about the love between Jesus and the Church which is the sort of love a husband and wife have for each other. Love means always dying to self and living for the other. In the gospel, some people cannot accept the teaching of Jesus giving his own body and blood for our eternal life. Jesus wonders if his apostles are going to leave too. However, Peter declares: “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.” Again, there is the declara-tion of serving the one true God. We have to get away from all sorts of idols---our comfort zones, pastimes, escapist mechanisms, possessions---to serve God and live in his love. Everything needs perspective in order for us to consider the life with Christ the most essential and central in our lives. Are we ready to keep God at the center and move the other things to their rightful, peripheral positions?

Think About It: “The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of them-selves, and wiser people so full of doubts”---Bertrand Russell (1872-1970).

Joke---Jonah and the Whale: One day, a teacher was talking to her first grade class about whales when a lit-tle girl had a question. Little Girl: “Do whales swallow people?” Teacher: “No, even though they are much big-ger than a person, they have throat pleats that filter their food of krill and plankton.” Little Girl: “But Mrs. Thurston says Jonah was swallowed by a whale.” Teacher getting angry: “Blue whales cannot swallow people.” Little Girl: “Well, when I get to heaven I'll just ask Jonah if he was really swallowed by a whale.” Teacher, still red with anger: “What if Jonah went to hell?” Little Girl: “Well, then you can ask him.” Your Friend & Pastor, Father Charles Puthota

Reflecting on the Word Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time In John’s Gospel, Jesus’ shocking words about eat-ing his flesh and drinking his blood finally prove to be too much for some of his listeners and they walk away. His followers stay, however, because they believe that no matter how uncomfortable or confused Jesus makes them, he is the one who has the words of everlasting life. There are many of Jesus’ teachings, regarding wealth or family relations or the need to suffer for one’s faith, that might strike us in a similar way, but by faith we hang on and hope for deeper understanding. As understanding of Christ’s Eucharistic presence grew, his words about eat-ing his flesh and drinking his blood undoubtedly became less troubling to them, though no less mysterious. For many people today, Paul’s injunction in the Let-ter to the Ephesians that wives “be subordinate to their husbands as to the Lord” is probably more troubling than Jesus’ words in the Gospel. Given the very different place of women in society today and a more egalitarian understanding of marriage, many may be tempted, like Jesus’ hearers in the Gospel, to walk away. They may find it difficult to discern what in Paul’s words is simply a reflection of the time and place in which he wrote and what is of enduring significance. Two points might help. First, Paul’s words are in-tended to help women living in a particular context to understand their lives as wholly dedicated to Christ. His intention is not to call their immediate context into ques-tion, but to call people to faithfulness. Second, Paul says that Christians should be “subordinate to one another out of reverence for Christ.” It is not simply wives who should put the interests of their husbands before their own (which is what the command to “be subordinate” means in this case); it is all the followers of Jesus, wheth-er male or female, young or old, servant or master, who should put the interest of others before their own.

For prayerful consideration and discussion

St. Veronica Parking Lot Guidelines

For the safety and accessibility of all, kindly observe the following parking guidelines: • Please park in lined parking stalls - this leaves the

aisles and fire lanes free and clear for movement around the lot, and makes it easier to see pedestrians.

• Please do not park in fire lanes and designated “no parking” areas - this applies to all red curbs and signed areas, the area surrounding the newly land-scaped area outside the school building, and the side of the church facing El Camino, both along the build-ing and along the fence - this is a fire lane!

• Please park on the basketball courts only as a last re-sort - now that all the parking stalls are easy to see, let’s try parking in lined stalls first. The basketball courts are not designed to support heavy vehicle traf-fic, and the tires and fluids from the vehicles are causing damage to the courts.

• Please observe all handicap parking, ingress and egress signs - by law, designated handicap stalls are for vehicles displaying a valid placard or license plate only. The driveway on Ponderosa Road is “exit on-ly”; the roadway along the El Camino side of the church is “one way” as marked by arrows.

Thank you for your adherence to our parking guidelines. Working together, we will continue to keep our beautiful parking lot and campus safe and accessible for all of our parishioners and guests.

Helping Those Who Help Others

When you stop by the store this week, con-sider buying a couple extra items to donate to our St. Vincent de Paul pantry.

Our parish St. Vincent de Paul pantry is in particular need of the following items, many of which may be purchased at the local dollar stores: macaroni & cheese, cereal, peanut butter, toilet tissue. Any donations are welcome!

Donations for St. Vincent de Paul may be dropped off at the Pastoral Center office during regular business hours, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Monday-Friday.
