The Pastor’s Corner

Jesus seems to be on repeat today. Last week he startled his apostles by announcing his arrest and death, and called us to suffer and die with him, concluding, "For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the gospel will save it." In case we missed it, today he repeats the same message: "The Son of Man is to be handed over to men and they will kill him, and three days after his death the Son of Man will rise." Then introducing one of his reversals again he says: "If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all."

These are troubling life goals God has for us. It's problematic enough that Jesus seems to be fixated on the negative, drumming on his own death, but he seems intent on drawing us into the same orbit, telling us we have to suffer and be in last place with him.

One of the themes throughout the Gospel of Mark is the disciples inability to understand Jesus, their relentless incomprehension of what he is about and what he is trying to do. On a day like today, we can have some sympathy for them, as we witness Jesus seemingly oblivious to his own power and insisting that the bumbling leadership down in Jerusalem will outmatch him and leave him crushed.

At the very least, Jesus is making it easy for us to determine whether or not we are living as his followers. If we look like we belong in this world, jockeying for popularity or concerned for our comforts, we mark ourselves as far from the Lord. If instead we look funny, seeking last place and taking care of others, we may be on his wavelength.

Perhaps this is why our religion is described as being based on Faith: it takes a lot of faith to relinquish our share of the pie and to let ourselves be handed over to those who don't have our best interests in mind. This is the question Jesus' leadership poses to us: do we really trust this guy?

Jesús parece repetirse hoy. La semana pasada sorprendió a sus apóstoles con el anuncio de su arresto y muerte y nos llamó para sufrir y

morir con él, concluyendo, "para quien quiera guardar su vida la perderá, pero quien pierda su vida por mi causa y del Evangelio, la salvará".

En caso de que no lo hayamos entendido, hoy nos repite el mismo mensaje: "El Hijo del hombre va a ser entregado en manos de los hombres;

le darán muerte, y tres días después de muerto, resucitara". Luego introducir uno de sus retrocesos otra vez dice: "Si alguno quiere ser el

primero, que sea el último de todos y el siervo de todos."

Son preocupantes los objetivos de vida que Dios tiene para nosotros. Es complicado el anuncio de Jesús sobre su propia muerte, pero parece

ser que intenta llamarnos hacia su misma orbita. nos dice que tenemos que sufrir y ser los últimos junto con él.

Uno de los temas en todo el Evangelio de Marcos es la inhabilidad de los discípulos para entender a Jesús, su renuente incomprensión de lo

que es él y lo que intenta hacer. En un día como hoy, podemos tener cierta simpatía por ellos, mientras somos testigos de que Jesús aun con

todo su poder, acepta que el líder de Jerusalén lo destruirá.

Por lo menos, Jesús nos facilita determinar el hecho de si estamos viviendo como sus seguidores. Si por pertenecer a este mundo vivimos en

busca de popularidad o preocupados por nuestras propias comodidades entonces nosotros mismos nos alejados del Señor. Si en cambio

queremos ser diferentes, buscando el último lugar y cuidando de los demás, podemos entonces estar más cerca de él.

Tal vez es por eso que nuestra religión se describe a ser basada en la fe: porque se toma mucha fe para renunciar a nuestra parte del pastel y

dejarnos ser entregados a aquellos que no tienen nuestro mejor interés en mente. Esta es pregunta que el liderazgo de Jesús hacia nosotros:

¿realmente confiamos en este hombre?

How does our parish attract inquirers each year who consider becoming Catholic? The short answer is you! When any parish has many inquirers year after year, it is the fruit of the Holy Spirit as parish members open their hearts to welcome others. Members of a welcoming and evangelizing community take seriously their call to share the Divine message of salvation. It happens in parish families, in the workplace, in gatherings with friends and neighbors, and in daily contacts. Give thanks to God as he continuously strengthens each of us who seek to do his will in offering a gentle, humble, and clear welcome to the Catholic faith. "Go out into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature." (Mark 16:15)

RCIA is resuming this weekend! These sessions are open to anyone in the parish, as the topics apply to everyone because we are all on a lifelong faith journey. We meet on Sundays at 9:30 am to 10:30 am in Bishop Quinn Hall for the month of September. On October 14th we will move over to the dining room in the gym. Please join us for donuts and coffee and welcome those who are continuing or just starting their journey into the Catholic faith! Spanish classes are Sunday in the Lab room at 10:00am.
