Jeremiah 38:4-6, 8-ro / Hebrews :rz::-4lLuke rz:49-53

Though it's still technically summer in most of the U.S., in late August I

begin detecting the scent of autumn. I look forward to the brisk air, the

crunching leaves, and locally produced apple cider.

What I anticipate most is the beginning of fireplace season.

My husband builds excellent fires using a self-designed log arrangement,

and his fire maintenance techniques are highly entertaining. He's a fire-

fidgeter, always poking, adjusting, or replacing a log here or there tomaximize flames and oxygen intake. And long after a fire appears dead, he

tries to resurrect it to its former glory with bellows and Big Bad Wolf

breathing.

Jesus speaks today about setting the earth on fire. I wonder what he'd say ifhe arrived in our homes, neighborhoods, or churches today. Would he see

his followers on fire for his gospel? Or would he encounter mostly dying

embers?

I imagine he might ask us to do some serious fire-fidgeting with our

Christianity. We often fall into a laid-back Christianity, the requirements ofwhich are simply being nice, talking about family values, and going to

church on Sunday. But Jesus' teachings are extremely radical-turn the

other cheek, love your enemies, give away your possessions, lay down your

life. This isn't an easy-peasy set of beliefs. These are hard, demanding, life-

altering, fire-igniting truths to live by.

Perhaps it's time to fidget with your Christian fire this week to see how

fervently you live these truths. Ask Jesus to breathe the Holy Spirit on your

fire to revive those dying embers so you can blaze again as a disciple of the

Lord. Janel Esker su ndaybu lleti n @ li gu ori. org

LITUF{GICAN- MINISTRIES

Mahalo to allthose who participated in the Ministry Day on Saturday, August

17th. lt was a lot of fun and we pray you will notice more joyful ministers

among us. Mahaloto Fr. Clarence Zamora who allowed usthe use of the hall

at St. Anthony in Kailua.

B{SI-{OP'S PASTORI\L VISIT

Five years ago with the implementation of the Road Map of the Diocese,

Bishop Larry Silva sent a letter to all the parishes asking to set up a visit toeach parish, to meet with the leadership and with the parishioners to discuss

their concerns, to hear their vision for their communities and to celebrate faith

and the Sacraments with the people. Our Parish visit has been scheduled for

October rzth and .3'h. ln preparation for this, a survey will be conducted next

week at allthe Masses.

This visit coincides with the celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation for

8 of our young people. Please pray for them as they begin the final prepara-

tion to receive the Sacrament: Zachary Cho, Benett Chun, Jonah Chun, Rachel

Heafner, Carly Nakano, Madison Seto and Jace Sisneroz.

STE\nlAR.DSHIP

We continuethe work on the overhead paneling. The rental of the scaffolding

is $z5o per month as well as the cost for the supplies. We used the equipment

to install the lights over the sanctuary and the Stations of the Cross(S5,ooo) as

well as the Cross on the front of the building. Mahalo for your generous

donations to the Repair and Maintenance fund. Work will continue as the

funds become available. Thank you for your sacrifice. We are also planning on

hosting Family Promise families in October.

R=LIGIOUS EDUCATION -CCD

CCD-(Confraternity of Christian Doctrine)-an association formed in r5oo's to give in-

structions to all Catholics. Religious Education's primary catechists are the parents ofthe children. Without their love and encouragement and example, the passing on ofour Catholic faith would be impossible. Our volunteer catechists commit 8:oo to 9:20a.m. each week to provide more structured learning for Pre-K to 6th grade using the

curriculum from Circle Press. Our Sacrament preparation Teacher, Marcy Heafner is

'retiring'this year. We are thankful for the years she has invested into the lives of our

children. G.K. Chesterton said, "The greatest things of our faith should be taught tothe youngest members." One of the best ways to learn more about your faith is toteach it to someone else. Please see Velma Guieb-Mamuad (Religious Ed Coordina-

tor) or Father Khanh if you would like to be a CCD Catechist. Classes begin Sept. zz.

d e ar PAD Rf,

I'm a young womdn with scrupulosity. I feel called a get married

someday, but I'm worried about passing along my scrupulosity to

my children.Is that possible?

Scrupulosity is a religious manifestation of obsessive-

compulsive disorder in which people have obsessive

thoughts about matters of faith and spirituality. Living withscrupulosity is lonely and emotionally draining. The shame

the scrupulous feel over their perceived sinfulness oftenisolates them from friends and family who can't understandtheir fears.

The treatment for scrupulosity is a combination of goodpastoral care from one-and only one-priest as well as

professional guidance, which often includes drug therapy. The medical profession agrees that scrupulosiry cannot be

passed on like eye color or other DNA-based attributes and

that children raised with a scrupulous parent do notnecessarily become scrupulous . It may be possible to teach

your children to have a tender conscience, but for them tobecome scrupulous, they must also have an active physical

and/ or psychological disposition. An excellent resource for people with scrupulosity-andthose who love them-is Liguori Publications'free monthlynewsletter, Scrupulous Anonyrnous. It's available at liguori.org(scroll all the way down to On the Web and click onScrupulous Anonymous).
