caveinspiredmusic.com TWENTIETH CENTURY ART MUSIC ORCHESTRAL EL AMOR BRUJO EN LA CUEVA 1927 to 1959 MUSIC BACKGROUND: According to one source Manuel de Falla first visited Granada while on vacation in 1907 (Orozco 1985) However no documentation could be found by Antonio Gallego (specialist on this work) to prove this visit. He was born in Cadiz in 1876 and certainly, at some point before moving to Paris in 1907, he would have visited Granada and probably also seen the gypsy dances in one of the artificial nightclub caves of Sacromonte just outside Granada. When El Amor Brujo was premiered at the Lara Theater in Madrid in 1915, the orchestra consisted of only ten instruments: a string quintet, flute, oboe, trumpet, French horn, and piano. This photo of Manuel de Falla dates to 1915. In 1924 Falla finished a transformation of El amor Brujo into a one-act 'ballet pantomímico'; it is in this version that the work is best known to this day. Published by Chester, the ballet was given in Paris the next year .” (Anon. 2016) This one act ballet is divided into two parts both taking place inside a cave. The first part (cuadro) is entitled, “La cueva de los gitanos,” [The Cave of the Gypsies] and the second part; “La cueva de la bruja,” [The Witch’s Cave]. The famous dancer, Antonia Mercé, is shown in front of cave set in 1925 Manuel de Falla described the stage setting La acción se desarrolla en el interior de una cueva de gitanos andaluces. An atmosphere of witchcraft and mystery reigns. It is night. At the back of the cave and through a hole that serves as the entrance, you see a path illuminated by the moon… The cave is illuminated with mysterious light and the Specter appears.] Some of the recorded versions listed below may not include the second movement mood piece, En la Cueva La noche (In the Cave The Night), which comes in right after, Introducción y escena (Introduction & Scene). All complete versions of the ballet would include this piece but it might be omitted from a partial interpretation released on one side of a 10-inch (25 cm) disc.

ORCHESTRAL EL AMOR BRUJO – EN LA CUEVA

1927 to 1959 MUSIC BACKGROUND:

According to one source Manuel de Falla first visited Granada while on vacation in 1907 (Orozco 1985) However no documentation could be found by Antonio Gallego (specialist on this work) to prove this visit.

“In 1924 Falla finished a transformation of El amor Brujo into a one-act 'ballet pantomímico'; it is in this version that the

work is best known to this day. Published by Chester, the ballet was given in Paris the next year.” (Anon. 2016) This one act ballet is divided into two parts both taking place inside a cave. The first part (cuadro) is entitled, “La cueva de los gitanos,” [The Cave of the Gypsies] and the second part; “La cueva de la bruja,” [The Witch’s Cave]. The famous dancer, Antonia Mercé, is shown in front of cave set in 1925

(de Falla 1922) [The action takes place inside a cave of Andalusian gypsies. An atmosphere of witchcraft and mystery reigns. It is night. At the back of the cave and through a hole that serves as the entrance, you see a path illuminated by the moon… The cave is illuminated with mysterious light and the Specter appears.]

Some of the recorded versions listed below may not include the second movement mood piece, En la Cueva – La noche (In the Cave – The Night), which comes in right after, Introducción y escena (Introduction & Scene). All complete versions of the ballet would include this piece but it might be omitted from a partial interpretation released on one side of a 10-inch (25 cm) disc.

This is far from being a complete discography of this piece from Manuel de Falla’s work. There are many recent LP albums which do not list this movement, “En la Cueva,” either on the

label or in the liner notes; some of these have been included here nevertheless, but others were omitted.

The titles given here for the ballet and this particular excerpt, whether in Spanish, English, or French, are not necessarily the exact titles found on the label of the records in question. When uncertain the title is enclosed in parenthesis. Gypsy Cave at Grenada, ca. 1910

Several conductors have recorded two versions of the ballet and these will be all indicated below.

The titles that are bracketed in parenthesizes are my given titles that could not be verified or double checked against the actual albums.

In the opinion of two French critics (Henry-Jacques & Gilbert) this orchestra is "un des plus beaux ensembles du monde" [one of the best orchestras in the world]. "Argenta n'eut qu'à lui insuffler sa comprehension de l'oeuvre, et jamais orchestre n'aura été aussi espagnol." (Henry-Jacques 1951) [Argenta only needed to infuse his understanding of the work and no orchestra was ever more Spanish.] "Son report en microsillon accroit encore son éclat, sa profondeur, ses dimensions de songe, ses épousailles du reel et du surnaturel." (Gilbert 1952) [This micro-groove release enhances even more this version's brilliance, its depth, its measure of illusion, its marriage of the real and the supernatural.] This orchestra should not be confused with the Orchestre du Conservatoire de Paris. The Orchestre de la Societe des Concerts du Conservatoire was the first French symphonic orchestra, active between 1828-

1967. Then from 1967, this orchestra continues as Orchestre de Paris. Notes: The German title of this piece translates as “Among the Gypsies (The Night Watch)” and this is the original “En la cueva (In the Cave)” piece. (Henri-Jacques 1955)

[Even for someone like Fritz Lehmann it is difficult to compete with the two complete versions that we have of El Amor Brujo, conducted by the two greatest Spanish conductors of our time, Freitas-Branco and Argenta.
