1-180 St. Thomas of Villanova TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JUNE 21, 2015 A Note from Fr. Joe….. Perhaps you remember the story about the young man who was climbing a cliff. Suddenly, he slipped, grabbed a branch, and hung there. No matter what he did, he couldn’t pull himself up. After becoming exhausted, he finally looked to the heavens and cried out, “God help me! Please help me!” The clouds parted and a deep voice resounded, “Listen carefully. Let go of the branch. Trust me. Let go!” The young man paused, looked around, and then glanced back up to heaven once more and yelled, “Is anyone else up there?” In the midst of the storms and trials of our lives, how often have we wondered if there was anyone else up there? Have we thought that perhaps God’s fallen asleep at the watch? We can lose hope when tossed around by the forces of life beyond our control, asking, as did the disciples in this Sunday’s Gospel passage, “Teacher, do you not care?” A lost job. A failed relationship. The death of someone close to us. Yet, it’s in these very circumstances that faith really comes into play; believing that we’re not alone in the storm; trusting that someone is with us – and not just anyone, but the One who can still the waves of vulnerability, of uncertainty. Jesus the Christ weathered the storms of life – and even more importantly death – so that he could help us do the same. As St. Paul declares in his 2 nd Letter to the Corinthians, “He indeed died for all,” making us a “new creation;” bringing us “great calm.” The secret of remaining calm in the midst of the storm is learning to cultivate an awareness of and trust in God’s abiding power, in God’s presence – beginning in the good times. Prayer in faith, in trust assists us in discovering that quiet place of strength, even when the storms hit. As Job and the disciples demonstrate though, this is an ongoing process; it’s something into which we continue to grow throughout our lives. Jesus certainly appears to recognize this, as he asks, “Why are you terrified? Do you not yet have faith?” May we come to trust, to appreciate that no one else is up there but the One who does care and who can bring us calm, a peace beyond all understanding. “Listen carefully…Trust me. Let go!” As with many of you and your fathers, I’m sure, my Dad was one of those who first taught me to trust. He took the training wheels off my bike and convinced me to go solo, as he gave me a push to send me on my way. He was the one standing there beside me in the pool, as I took the initial strokes on my own. Before I knew it, I was even diving and trying to see how far I could go under water. Ironically, at the end of my Dad’s life, I was there at his bedside, telling him to trust and that it was okay to go with God. In his memory then, I sincerely wish a Happy Father’s Day to all our Dads and those who take the role of fathers in our lives! And, of course, we unite in recalling all those fathers who have gone before us. If you’re fortunate enough to be with your Dad this Sunday, perhaps you could use the following blessing at table or otherwise: “God our Father, in your wisdom and love you made all things. Bless my (our) father, that he may be strengthened and guided by you. Let the example of his Christian faith and love shine forth. Grant that we, his family, may honor him always with a spirit of profound respect. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.” God Bless! Fr. Joe Stewardship Thought for the Week “He said to them, ‘Why are you afraid? Have you no faith?’” Mark 4:40 Most of us like to be in control. Loss of control makes us fearful. Try changing your perspective, let God be the pilot! There’s an old saying “Do you want to make God laugh? Tell him your plans.” Put your trust in God. He always has a better plan. June 21, 2015 Dear Brother’s and Sisters in Christ: Participation in the Peter’s Pence Collection gives us an opportunity to be a witness of charity to our brothers and sisters around the world. Gifts to this annual collection help our Holy Father, Pope Francis, to support victims of war and natural disasters and others most in need of assistance. The Peter’s Pence Collection unites us in solidarity with the Holy Father and his works of charity toward those who are suffering around the world. Pope Francis reminds us that true power lies not in amassing possessions and resources for ourselves but in giving. “We must never forget that true power, at any level, is service, whose bring summit is upon the Cross….it means entering the logic of Jesus who kneels to wash the Apostles’ feet,” he said. Your contributions to the Peter’s Pence Collection join with the power of Christ to give support to those in need. Join Pope Francis and be a witness of charity throughout the world. This year the Peter’s Pence Collection will be taken at all Masses on the weekend of June 27 and June 28, 2015. Gratefully and with best wishes in Jesus Christ, Most Reverend Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap. Archbishop of Philadelphia

UPDATE ON THE WORLD MEETING OF FAMILIES

AND TWO WAYS TO VOLUNTEER

September 21-27 - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania The world Meeting of Families will take place on September 21-27 and will be highlighted by a visit from Pope Francis. More than two million people are expected to descend upon the region to take part in the weeks’ activities, particularly the Papal Mass scheduled for Sunday, September 27th. Interest in the World Meeting of Families is extremely high with many expressing a desire to be part of this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Volunteer through Villanova University There will be a limited number of volunteer spots available for members of the Villanova community (age 18+) to serve during the Festival of Families planned for Saturday, September 26, on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia. Villanova volunteers will be able to serve together as a group but specific volunteer roles and time committed have not yet been determined. Those interested in this service opportunity should fill out the Villanova Volunteer Registration Form. Please note that there will be an additional, required volunteer registration process administered by the World Meeting of Families that includes a background check. This group of Villanova volunteers will be a small part of the approximately 10,000 that will be engaged to support the World Meeting of Families. It is expected that spots will fill quickly and demand will exceed available opportunities. Additional volunteer outreach may occur through other communities, such as parishes, companies and schools. To serve with fellow Villanovans, both steps of the registration process must be completed. Registration is a must. Go to http://www.1.villanova.edu/villanova/president/worldmeetingoffamilies.html go to Villanova’s website: www.villanova.edu, click “ABOUT” and scroll to Leadership and Offices, click Office Volunteer through the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Volunteer through the Archdiocese Volunteer through the Archdiocese just opened the World Meeting of Families Volunteer Registration Portal. Go to www.worldmeeting2015.org, click on Volunteer and enter your information and you will be directed to Verified Volunteers for a background check. After your background check is completed, usually within 48 hours, you will receive an email inviting you BACK to sign up for the events. You will have the opportunity to donate the cost of your background check to The World Meeting of Families. Our Volunteer Support Team is ready to provide help at [email protected]. Thank you for dedicating your valuable time and talents during the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia!

SHARE THE

HARVEST

Our parish will be helping to feed people in need this summer by providing fresh produce to the food pantry at ElderNet in Bryn Mawr. Whether you love to garden, or just have a sunny spot in your yard, please consider growing a couple extra plants this spring to contribute to this worthy cause — (or you could purchase a few extra fruits or vegetables when you grocery shop). What better way to set a Christian example for your children or grandchildren than by sharing food with those less fortunate. Donations can be dropped off in the lobby of the parish center, Monday thru Wednesday, or in the back of the Rosemont Chapel after the 5:00pm Mass on Saturdays. Share the Harvest Ministry will begin collecting your home grown or purchased vegetables and fruit in mid-June and go until mid-September. If you have any questions or can help with delivery this summer, contact Parish Coordinator, Barb Gollin at 610-688-4168 or [email protected].

HISTORIC EXHIBITION:

Vatican Splendors makes exclusive East Coast stop in Philadelphia at the

Franklin Institute this summer. September 19, 2015 to February 15, 2016

The Franklin Institute, the most visited museum in Pennsylvania, has announced plans to host the exclusive East Coast destination of Vatican Splendors, beginning September 19. The exhibition, time to take place during the historic Papal Visit (September 26-27) and the 2015 World Meeting of Families Congress in Philadelphia (September 22-25), explores the historical and cultural impact of the Vatican over the span of 2,000 years through significantly relevant objects straight from the Vatican in Rome, Italy. Every object in the exhibition tells its own story, together forming a great historical mosaic of the Vatican — and many of the artifacts have never before been on public view at the Vatican in Rome. Highlights of the nearly 10,000 square foot exhibition include artwork by Michelangelo, including signed documents and a rarely seen bas relief sculpture, and tools used in work on the Sistine Chapel and the Basilica of Saint Peter’s; works by masters including Bernini and Guercino, artwork dating back to the first century, venerated remains (bone fragments) of Saints Peter and Paul, relics discovered at the tombs of Saints Peter and Paul, and historical objects from the modern and ancient basilicas of Saint Peter’s in Rome.

DO YOU KNOW YOUR

TRIBUNAL?

The Tribunal is a group of specially qualified Catholics whose responsibility is to come to the help of people who have experienced divorce and who may wish to remarry in the Catholic Church. When a divorce occurs, the Catholic Church always seeks to balance two realities. One is the unbreakableness of the bond of marriage. This is God’s law. It cannot be broken by human intervention. On the other hand, the Church is concerned about the spiritual welfare of the people involved. Was this a true marriage? Even though a Catholic marriage was celebrated, was there perhaps some deficiency in the consent of the parties involved? The annulment procedure addresses this problem. If you are divorced and want to marry in the Church or remarried outside the Catholic Church, please telephone the Tribunal Office.
