Before Using the TV/VCR 5Putting Batteries in the Remote Control

1Remove the battery compartment lid on the bottom ofthe remote control by sliding it in the direction of thearrow.

2Place two AA batteries inside the battery compartmentwith their polarities (+ and – ends) aligned as indicated.

3Replace the battery compartment lid.

Using the Remote Control● Point the remote control at the TV/VCR’s remote sensor.● Do not put objects between the remote control and the

TV/VCR.

TV/VCR Maintenance● In this TV/VCR, use only tapes with the mark.● Make sure any light adhesive stick-on notes are removed from

the video cassette tape before putting the tape in the TV/VCR.Removable labels like these can jam the TV/VCR.

● Periodic maintenance is required to maintain your TV/VCR’scontinued excellent performance. This TV/VCR has an automatichead cleaning system. However, the video heads will eventuallyrequire cleaning or replacement. Cleaning or replacement of thevideo heads should be performed by an authorized service cen-ter.

Video cassette tapes have record tabs to ensure that recordingsare not accidentally erased.

1To prevent accidental erasure, break off the tab with ascrewdriver.

2To record again, cover the hole with cellophane tape.

Connect an RF coaxial cable (75-ohm, not supplied) to the OUT Jackon the Cable Box and to theANT(enna) Jack on the TV/VCR.

Hooking Up Your TV/VCRWith an Indoor AntennaTo install a rod antenna (not sup-plied), push the stem of the antennainto the antenna hole on the top ofthe TV/VCR. Connect the antennawire to the ANT(enna) Jack on theback of the TV/VCR as shown.Extend the antenna and adjust itslength, direction, and angle for theclearest picture.

• Before connecting the rod antenna or coaxial cable to the ANT(enna) Jack, make sure the pin is not bent. Ifthe pin is bent, straighten it as illustrated, then connect it to the ANT(enna) Jack.

• A rod antenna (not supplied) is available from Philips Service Company. The part number is 4835 303 37006.To order, call 1-800-851-8885.

8 Turning On the TV/VCRBefore you turn on the TV/VCR, make sure there are batteries inthe remote control (details are on page five) and the TV/VCR ishooked up correctly (details are on pages six - seven).The instructions on this page work only when you turn on theTV/VCR for the first time.

1Press the POWER button. The TV/VCR will come on and thelanguage select display screen shown below will appear.

2Press the Number 1 button to select English on-screendisplays or press the Number 2 button to select Spanishon-screen displays.

3Press the STATUS/EXIT button. The channel program dis-play screen shown below will appear.

4Press the F.FWD/+ button to begin automatic channelprogramming. AUTO SET PROCEEDING / PLEASE WAIT willappear on-screen. The TV/VCR will place all of the channels youreceive into its memory, so when you scan through channels usingthe CHANNEL Up/Down buttons, you’ll only scan through chan-nels that you receive. When channels are programmed, CHAN-NELS ARE SET will appear on-screen briefly. Then the TV/VCRwill go to the lowest channel programmed.(If you try to program channels when there is no antenna or cableconnected to the TV/VCR, programming will appear to take place,but eventually a NO TV SIGNALS ... message will appear on-screen.Connect an antenna or cable to the TV/VCR, then try again. Youmay need to follow the steps on pages nine - 11 instead.)

5Now, you may use the CHANNEL Up/Down buttons or theNumber buttons on the remote control to select a TV/VCR chan-nel. Use the VOLUME Up/Down buttons to adjust the sound.

• If you do not see any on-screen dis-plays when you turn on the TV/VCR,check your hook-ups, then try again.If you still do not see any on-screendisplays, follow the steps on pagesnine - 11 to select a language andprogram channels.

• To skip this feature and play a tapeimmediately, insert a tape with itsrecord tab removed. Playback willbegin. Or, to skip step 2, press theSTATUS/EXIT button before pro-ceeding. All on-screen displays willbe in English. To skip step 4, pressthe STATUS/EXIT button beforeproceeding. Channels will not beprogrammed, and CHANNELS NOTSET will appear on-screen briefly.

• You cannot program channels if youare using a Cable Box.

• Line Input mode will always bestored in the TV/VCR’s memory aschannel 00. When you select chan-nel 00, A/V IN will appear on-screen briefly. Press the CHANNELUp/Down buttons or Number but-tons to select another channel.

• Line Input mode will always bestored in the TV/VCR’s memory aschannel 00. You cannot delete it.

• When you select channel 00, A/V INwill appear on-screen briefly. To exitLine Input mode, use the Numberbuttons or the CHANNEL Up/Downbuttons to select another channel.

• You cannot program channels whenthe TV/VCR is on channel 00 (A/VINPUT will be selected at INPUT atstep 2). Select ANTENNA or CABLEat step 2.

Helpful Hints5Wait for a few minutes. When programming is complete,CHANNELS ARE SET will appear on-screen. Then the program-ming of the lowest channel number placed in the TV/VCR’s mem-ory will appear on-screen. Now, when you press the CHANNELUp/Down buttons, you will scan only through channels youreceive.

12 Setting the Clock

• Entries that do not match theTV/VCR’s internal calendar willcause a question mark (?) toappear on the TV/VCR screen.

• To make corrections while you aresetting the clock, press the CLEARbutton until the space for the num-ber you want to correct is flashing.Then enter the correct number.

• To make corrections after you haveset the clock, start again at step 1.

• If you press the STATUS/EXIT but-ton when you are setting the clock,the TV/VCR will exit Set Clock modeand return to the program you werewatching.

There are three ways to set the clock: Manually, with AutomaticPBS Channel Selection, or with Manual PBS Channel Selection.With manual clock setting, you tell the TV/VCR the current time.The TV/VCR then adjusts the time accordingly. With Automaticor Manual PBS Channel Selection, the TV/VCR gets the currenttime from your local PBS station. It updates the time by referringto your PBS station broadcasts. If you use either Manual PBSChannel Selection or Automatic PBS Channel Selection, follow thesteps on page 19 to have the TV/VCR update the clock accordingto your Time Zone.Cable Box users should set the clock manually. To set the clock manually, follow the steps on pages 12 -13. Toset the clock using Automatic PBS Channel Selection, follow thesteps on pages 14 - 15. • If you press the STATUS/EXIT but-ton while you are setting the clock,the screen will exit Set Clock modeand return to the program you werewatching. If this happens, start over.

• You must turn off the TV/VCR forseveral minutes during automaticclock setting. If the clock is not setwhen you turn on the TV/VCR,repeat the steps for Automatic PBSChannel Selection. If the clock still isnot set, set the clock manually.

• You cannot use the AUTO CLOCKfeature if you don’t receive a PBSchannel that carries a time signal inyour area. Set the clock manually.

When you watch a program that is being broadcast with closedcaptioning, you can access on-screen boxes containing the pro-gram’s dialogue (for example, what a character is saying), dialoguein a foreign language, or information (such as a channel guide,schedule, or announcements). Follow the steps below to selectclosed captioning.Not all TV programs and commercials are broadcast with closedcaptioning. Similarly, all types of closed captioning (second lan-guage, screen text, etc.) are not always broadcast. If closed cap-tioning is not broadcast, you cannot receive it. This does notindicate a problem with the TV/VCR. Refer to your area’s TVprogram listings for the shows offered with closed captioning.

44 Real Time Counter MemoryFollow the steps below to reset the real time counter to zero ata tape location you want to refer to later.

1Play, fast forward, or rewind a tape to the location thatyou would like to refer to later. Stop the tape.

2Press the STATUS/EXIT button. The real time counter willappear on-screen.

3While the counter remains on-screen, press the CLEARbutton to reset the real time counter to zero.

4While the counter remains on-screen, press the MEMO-RY button so that M appears on-screen. To erase a realtime counter memory, press the MEMORY button so that the Mdisappears from the screen.

Automatic Operation Features 45The following playback features will always operate:

Automatic PlaybackWhen you put a tape in the TV/VCR, the power will come onautomatically. If the tape’s record tab is missing, playback willbegin. (If a timer recording is set, you may have to press thePOWER button to turn on the TV/VCR. If the TV/VCR is turnedoff and a timer recording is set, the TV/VCR will not accept a tapethat is missing a record tab.)

Automatic Rewind, Eject, OffWhen a tape is played, fast forwarded, or recorded to its end, theTV/VCR will rewind the tape, stop, turn itself off, then eject thetape. If a real time counter memory is set, the TV/VCR will onlyrewind the tape to the point at which the real time counter wasset to zero, then stop. The TV/VCR will not turn itself off oreject the tape.

Memory Rewind, Power OffWhen the POWER button is pressed while the TV/VCR is rewind-ing a tape, REW → POWER OFF will appear on-screen. TheTV/VCR will turn itself off when the tape has finished rewinding.If a real time counter memory is set, the TV/VCR may onlyrewind the tape to the point at which the real time counter wasset to zero, then turn itself off.

Tape EjectA tape can be ejected with the TV/VCR power on or off (but theTV/VCR must be plugged in). If a timer recording is programmed,a tape can not be ejected when the power is off. Turn on theTV/VCR power, then eject the tape. Be sure to insert a tape andturn off the TV/VCR power for the timer recording.

Automatic Tracking AdjustmentThe TV/VCR has automatic tracking, which continually adjuststracking to give you the best possible picture quality. With somerecordings, however, you may get a better picture using the man-ual tracking controls (see below).

Manual TrackingTo adjust the tracking manually during tape playback, press theCHANNEL Up/Down buttons on the TV/VCR or the TRACKINGUp/Down buttons on the remote control.NOTES:• To return tracking to the position it was in when the TV/VCR was

shipped from the factory, press the CHANNEL Up/Down buttons onthe TV/VCR at the same time.

• Tracking is returned to automatic tracking when a tape is inserted,or when the STOP/▼ button is pressed to halt playback.

1When in Play mode, press and release the F.FWD/+ button or theREW(ind)/– button. A fast forward or reverse picture search willbegin.

2To return to normal playback, press the PLAY/▲ button.

Super High Speed Searching (LP/SLP)

1When in Play mode, press the F.FWD/+ button or theREW(ind)/– button, then press again. The TV/VCR will nowsearch in super high speed.

2To return to normal playback, press the PLAY/▲ button.

Viewing a Still Picture

1When in Play mode, press the PAUSE/STILL button. A still picture(frozen image) will appear on-screen. The noise lines will moveeach time you press the PAUSE/STILL button.

2To release the still picture and return to normal playback, pressthe PLAY/▲ button.

• Still mode will automatically switchto Stop mode after five minutes toprotect the TV/VCR and the tapefrom damage.

• SP/LP/SLP means this feature willwork with tapes recorded inStandard Play, Long Play, or SuperLong Play. For details about tapespeed, see page 29.

• LP/SLP means this feature will workwith tapes recorded in Long Playand Super Long Play. For details ontape speed, see page 29.

• If a still picture vibrates vertically,stabilize it by pressing the TRACK-ING Up/Down buttons on theremote control or the CHANNELUp/Down buttons on the TV/VCR.

• During forward and reverse search-ing, horizontal noise bars willappear on the TV/VCR screen.

Then,when you push the CHANNEL Up/Down buttons,you only scan through channels you receive.Bands: settings that allow you to tune channels.• Antenna – VHF (very high frequency; channels 2

If you are having problems with your TV/VCR, check this list of problems and possible solutions beforerequesting service. You may be able to solve the problem yourself.

LocationFor safe operation and satisfactory performance of your TV/VCR, remember the following:• Shield it from direct sunlight and keep it away from sources of intense heat. • Avoid dusty or humid places.• Avoid places with insufficient ventilation. Do not block the ventilation openings at the top and bottom

of the TV/VCR. Do not place the TV/VCR on a carpet, as this will block the ventilation openings.• Avoid locations subject to strong vibrations.• Do not place the TV/VCR near strong magnetic fields.• Do not move the TV/VCR from a cold place to a hot place, or vice versa.Time Selection12 AM = Midnight12 PM = NoonElectrical Shock and Fire Hazards• Do not handle the power cord with wet hands.• Do not pull the power cord when disconnecting the TV/VCR from the AC (alternating current) wall

outlet. Grasp it by the plug.• If water is spilled on the TV/VCR, unplug the power cord immediately and take the TV/VCR to an

authorized service center.• Do not put your fingers or objects into the TV/VCR cassette compartment.• Do not place anything on top of the TV/VCR.Dew Warning• Moisture condensation may occur inside the unit when it is moved from a cold place to a warm place,

after heating a cold room, or when the humidity is high. There is no warning that moisture has accu-mulated in your TV/VCR. But, if you try to play a tape in a TV/VCR in which moisture has accumulat-ed, the tape and the TV/VCR could be damaged. Therefore, if you try to play a tape and the tape isdestroyed, and you think moisture may have accumulated inside the TV/VCR, keep the TV/VCR poweron (but do not play a tape) for at least two hours. This will allow the TV/VCR to dry.

TV/VCR will not record.• Make sure the tape has a record tab (page five).• Make sure the TV/VCR is not in Record Defeat mode (page 36).TV/VCR will not perform a timer recording.• Make sure the recording start and stop times are set correctly (pages 32 - 35).• Make sure the TV/VCR power is off.• Make sure the clock is set (pages 12 - 17).• Make sure there is a tape in the TV/VCR. The tape must have a record tab.• If the power fails, programmed timer recordings will not be lost. The programmed timer recordings

will be restored when the clock is reset after the power failure. (The clock will reset itself automati-cally if you are using the AUTO CLOCK feature. Details are on pages 14 - 17. If you are not using theAUTO CLOCK feature, reset the clock manually; then, the timer recordings will be restored. Detailsare on pages 12 - 13.) The timer recording will not occur only if the timer recording was scheduled totake place during the power failure.

• Make sure the TV/VCR is not in Record Defeat mode (page 36).TV/VCR will not perform a one touch recording.• Make sure the tape has a record tab (page five).• Make sure the TV/VCR is not in Record Defeat mode (page 36).• Plug the power cord into an active AC outlet (page seven).• Check your hookups (pages six - seven).• Program channels (page 10).The remote control is not available, or the remote control will not accessthe pop up menu.• Use the buttons on the front panel of the TV/VCR to access the pop up menu (page 20).

Helpful Hints (cont’d) 49TV/VCR has no power.• Make sure the power plug is completely connected to an AC (alternating current) outlet.A power failure occurred.• Follow the steps on page eight to select a language and program channels, if prompted to do so. Then

set the clock (pages 12 - 17).TV/VCR power shuts off after 15 minutes.• To save energy, the TV/VCR will shut itself off after 15 minutes when it is on a channel that is not

receiving a broadcast signal (for example, a station that has gone off the air for the night). This is normal.Channel reception is poor.• Check connections, then program channels again (page 10).TV/VCR does not have a picture.• Adjust the antenna (page six).• Connect the antenna or cable directly to the TV/VCR.• Adjust the TV/VCR picture controls (pages 24 - 25).TV/VCR has poor sound or no sound.• Adjust the volume.• Press the MUTE button to restore the volume.Tape playback is poor or tape is destroyed.• Adjust the tracking. Details are on page 45.• If moisture has accumulated in your TV/VCR, keep the power on for at least two hours, but do not try

per.Remote control does not operate the TV/VCR.• Aim the remote control directly at the TV/VCR’s remote sensor. Details are on pages five and 20.• Remove all obstacles between the remote control and the TV/VCR.• Inspect and replace the batteries in the remote control.
