THE YIELD MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Yield Management is also referred to as Revenue Management.

It is a system that understands, anticipates and then reacts to consumer behaviorin order to maximize revenue or profit from a fixed & perishable resource.

Examples of fixed & perishable resources are airline seats & hotel room reservations.

Revenue is lost if these resources are not sold in a particular point in time.

In simple terms, Yield Management tries to answer the question:

"Given our operating constraints,what is the best mix of services for us to sell within a particular timeframe,

so that we generate the highest revenue?"

YIELD MANAGEMENT AIRLINE SEATS

Unsold seats are a definite no-no for the airline companies,that’s why they use special softwares to monitor how seats are being reserved.Only by then will they react accordingly by offering Variable Discounts online

when it appears that the seats will remain unsold.

In this example, a total of 16 airline seats are unsold.

They have the option to sell the 8 unsold seats at 50% Discount,&/or opt to sell the remaining 8 seats at 75% Discount or further up…

Now, we know where those “Piso” Rates offered by the local airlines came about.

YIELD MANAGEMENT HOTEL ROOM RESERVATION

Hotels also utilize the Yield Management system, largely the same way airline companies use them.

They monitor room occupancy, calculate the rates applied and possible restrictions on sales,in order to maximize the company revenue.

They also have the option to offer Variable Discountswhen it appears that the rooms will remain unoccupied for a certain period of time.

In simple terms, Yield Management in Hotelsis selling rooms and services at the right price, at the right time, to the right people.
