South Pacific: Fragile Paradise

Sunday,6 February 2011

Final

The South Pacific is the greatest ocean on Earth. It is still relatively healthy and teeming with fish, but it is a fragile paradise. Like all our oceans, it has little or no protection. So what is being done to preserve this ocean and its wildlife?

Countless millions of people rely on the Pacific's fish stocks. It is also home to the planet's richest coral reefs and most iconic ocean wildlife: whales, sharks, albatross and tuna (dubbed the cheetah and wildebeest of the fish world). The whales' future looks secure, for the moment, but international fishing fleets are taking a serious toll on the sharks, albatross and tuna. And there are other insidious threats to these bountiful seas.

Returning Programs for 2011

Mondays from February 7th

8:00pm ‑ Australian Story

Australian Story returns in 2011 with stories that are 'narrated' by the subjects themselves. The program aims to present a varied and contrasting picture of contemporary Australia and Australians from many different perspectives and to contribute to the wider spectrum of coverage of issues and individuals. It seeks to make Australians, in their diversity and individuality, more understandable to other Australians, and explores how Australians lead their lives through ordinary and extraordinary events. These stories may have greater interest or topicality when they are the stories ‑ often the hidden stories ‑ of celebrated or infamous individuals, but Australian Story will also give voice to the ordinary individuals who have lived through more‑than‑ordinary success or setback.

8:30pm ‑ Four Corners

Four Corners is Australia's premier television current affairs program. It has been part of the national story since August 1961, exposing scandals, triggering inquiries, firing debate, confronting taboos and interpreting fads, trends and sub‑cultures. Four Corners will repeat the following evening at approximately 11:35pm.

9:15pm ‑ Media Watch

Media Watch, presented by Jonathan Holmes, is Australia's leading forum for media analysis and comment. The program turns the spotlight onto those who literally 'make the news': the reporters, editors, sub-editors, producers, camera operators, sound recordists and photographers who claim to deliver the world to our doorsteps, radios, computers and living rooms. We also keep an eye on those who try to manipulate the media: the PR consultants, spin-doctors, lobbyists and ‘news makers’ who set the agenda. The program is then repeated the following evening at approximately 12:15am.

9:35pm – Q&A

Hosted by one of the ABC's most respected journalists, Tony Jones, Q&A puts punters, pollies and pundits together in the studio to thrash out the hot issues of the week. It's about democracy in action - the audience gets to ask the questions. It doesn't matter who you are, or where you're from, everyone can have a go and take it up to our politicians and opinion makers. Q&A is live to air - it's happening as viewers watch!

Tuesdays from February 8th

8:00pm – Foreign Correspondent

Foreign Correspondent has been Australia's leading international current affairs program since 1992. In 18 years reporters, producers, camera operators and sound recordists have travelled to more than 170 countries and produced more than 1,500 reports.

The program draws on the ABC's extensive network of international correspondents and a Sydney-based reporting and production team. Foreign Correspondent is designed to exploit the strengths of television – striking images and multi-track audio, a strong focus on storytelling, exotic locations and emotional appeal. Foreign Correspondent reports on major international issues but it also travels to places where reporters and camera operators are less welcome - investigating stories that governments don't want told.

Genius

Tuesday,8 February 2011

New Series

The second series of the comedy show in which Dave Gorman and his celebrity guests chew over the ridiculous, unworkable but sometimes genius ideas pitched by members of the public.

Genius with Dave Gorman features an audience of 69 potential geniuses, specially selected after an amazing 8,000 ideas sent in to Genius HQ. The Genius audience play an integral part in the show, and any one of them may be called upon to pitch their ideas to Dave and the studio guests.

Dave and the guests then decide whether the ideas are 'Genius' or not. Potential geniuses also pitch with films, drawings, animations and props they have made.

On this week's show, Dave is joined by comedian Russell Howard and sports presenter Hazel Irvine. The Genius pitches include a health and safety-conscious way of venting your anger, a way of fooling kids into eating more healthily and a quicker method of doing the 'Top 50 things to do before you die'.

Following the hugely successful radio show of the same format, the program encourages lots of creativity from its viewers.

Anatomy: Mind

Tuesday,8 February 2011

Anatomy: Mind is the second in a series of three short films telling unusual and compelling stories which explore how sexuality and the body work together as driving forces in the creative process.

Directed by Emma Crimmings, one of Australia's new talented filmmakers Mind is the captivating story of Tom Cho, a 36‑year‑old Chinese‑Australian man. From an early age, Tom thought he was different and knew he didn't match his mother's expectations of a good daughter. From the innocently playful gestures of a tomboy to the irrevocable impact of transitioning his gender, Mind charts Tom's escalating desire for personal transformation.

Using writing and fantasy as a way of exploring the nature of identity, Tom's wild imaginings, including images of Godzilla rampaging through Melbourne suburbia, resulted in a widely‑praised collection of short stories, Look Who's Morphing.

There is little that is as fundamental or fascinating as our identity, and our desire and ability to shape and transform it. Mind playfully unravels the intricate folds of identity as it explores the compelling story of one such transformation. It reveals the dramatic shifts in Tom's gender identity as he relentlessly seeks a new sense of self.

Tom’s story is ultimately one of loss and acceptance. In order to become someone else he must sacrifice the person he once was, but like a shadow his past always follows. It never disappears, no matter how much he tries to erase it.

At the same time as exploring the transformative powers of art and expression, Mind is also a story of a man and a woman who meet and fall in love. It is a film that explores identity and popular culture while also raising questions about the body, gender, sex and transformation.

Laid

Wednesday,9 February 2011

New Series

What happens when a bad one‑night stand from your distant past dies in horrible circumstances on a beach in Fiji? Are you supposed to go to the funeral, even though the sum total of his sexual knowledge was gleaned from Revenge of the Nerds?

Roo McVie (Alison Bell) is faced with these questions and more when boring Brendan from her Uni days dies tragically on holiday. It's enough to make any single girl re‑live some of her murkier sexual moments. Not a pleasant place to visit, to be perfectly honest. But when a second ex leaves this mortal coil, she's forced to dwell a little longer.

Add a third on to that, and things just start getting weird.

Roo is caught. Is it just her overactive imagination, or should she face facts ‑ men she has slept with are dying? What does this mean for future relationships? Can she ever go to bed with her thrilling brand‑new paramour Charlie (Abe Forsythe)? Or will he join the constant‑growing list of fatalities if they dare sleep together?

With her best friend EJ's (Celia Pacquola) help, Roo works to make sense of and solve what's going on. Together they nut out what seems to be a pattern, but can they work out how to stop all the dying? Will Roo and Charlie ever get the chance to be together without the Grim Reaper as their chaperone?

Laid is a six‑part series about sex. Sex and death. Death and valour. Life and love. For Roo, it's hard enough just trying to work out who she is and what it's all about without being dragged back to her chequered bedroom past to protect her exes ‑ and preserve her chance at true love.

Also stars Toby Truslove, Graeme Blundell, Shaun Micallef and Tracy Mann.

Final

In the final episode of this series The Bionic Vet attempts a rare operation which has only been carried out on two other dogs before.

Lanto, a nine‑year‑old Corgi, has an infected cancerous growth which is eating away his foot.

For Lanto's owner, Gillian, it's heartbreaking.

He's her sole companion and she can't imagine life without him.

The Bionic Vet (Noel Fitzpatrick) decides that the only way to save Lanto's life is to amputate the diseased paw and give him a custom made prosthetic foot.

Meanwhile, we also find out whether the groundbreaking surgery to correct puppy Jolly's bone growth deformity has been successful and whether he can now walk pain free.

And there's a rare visit from an unusual patient, a barn owl with a broken wing, who's brought in for assessment, and a stray Jack Russell terrier, Jade, needs treatment on a dislocated elbow before efforts can be made to find her a new permanent home.

The Bionic Vet pioneers revolutionary new surgical techniques to save and improve the lives of thousands of pets from all over Britain. He's a medical engineer, rebuilding animals using a whole range of metal structures, nuts, bolts, implants and groundbreaking procedures. For many of the animals referred to him, he's their last hope.

Ashes To Ashes

Thursday,10 February 2011

DCI Gene Hunt (Philip Glenister) immediately smells a rat when two former Manchester colleagues turn up on his patch.

DCI Litton and DI Bevan are on the trail of Northern comic Frank Hardwick, who is wanted for stealing £2,000 from the Police Widows' Fund. But their desperation to track him down leaves Gene and DI Alex Drake (Keeley Hawes) suspicious of their real motive.

Litton and Bevan quickly get their feet under the table at CID, with DCI Jim Keats (Daniel Mays) offering them the full co‑operation of the team and DI Ray Carling (Dean Andrews) joining them in reminiscing about the good old days.

In a show of machismo, there is soon a race between Gene and Litton to get to Frank first. Gene resorts to underhand tactics and, in a desperate bid to catch the comic, attempts to plant stolen pornographic videos on him via ‘lady of the night’ Gloria. However, it is Alex and WPC Shaz Granger (Montserrat Lombard) who beat the boys to the punch and bring Frank in for questioning.

During the interrogation, Alex discovers that Frank is terrified of someone at the station. There is more to the case than meets the eye. The team needs to bring the corrupt cop down but it becomes apparent that Frank's adversary may be smarter than anticipated.

Meanwhile, Alex takes advantage of having some of Gene's old Manchester colleagues around to delve deeper into the disappearance of Sam Tyler.

Chopper Rescue

Friday,11 February 2011

From the ocean to the outback, helicopter rescue crews save lives and face near death challenges every day. Chopper Rescue follows the work of the doctors, paramedics, rescue officers and aircrews who are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They cover huge distances across Queensland, from the remote outback and tropics to the outermost limits of The Great Barrier Reef.

Working in difficult remote locations and in cramped conditions in mid air, the doctors and paramedics safely deliver patients to hospital and along the way deliver hospital standard care.

Chopper Rescue is genuine life and death human drama.

This week the Chopper Rescue team attend two emergencies.

In South West Queensland some of the worst flooding in 54 years cuts off homesteads and towns across hundreds of square kilometres. Rescue 500 from Brisbane goes to the aid of a young woman suffering intense chest pain.

While, inland from Port Douglas Rescue 510 goes to the aid of a 21‑year‑old man who has fallen 10 metres onto his back.

New Tricks: It Smells Of Books

Friday,11 February 2011

Supt. Sandra Pullman (Amanda Redman), upon hearing about Bryan Lane's (Alun Armstrong) new interest in the London Library, reopens a case of suspicious death which occurred three years ago where a man fell from the roof of the college where he was formerly employed. The man was an academic who'd recently accepted an early retirement package. The original investigation found that he had been angry and depressed at the premature termination of his career, but he'd just that morning reserved some books at the library ‑ which presumes he meant to read them. The police investigation seemed to have been thorough enough, but an open verdict was recorded.

Lane starts to investigate within the library while Pullman, Gerry Standing (Dennis Waterman) and Halford (James Bolam) start checking out the dead man's former colleagues and contacts ‑ many of whom are library users, so the lines of inquiry intertwine.

The dead man's wife, Paula, who runs an antiquarian bookshop, blames the College Principal, Jeremy Ventham for her husband's death. She says he was hounded out of his job, and committed suicide. She tells them of the bitter atmosphere in the College at the time when her husband retired.

However, Ventham reveals that the 'early retirement' deal was a whitewash as the dead man was suspected of a protracted campaign of stealing valuable books from the college library ‑ which were then fenced by Paula. But two former colleagues tell the team that Ventham's efficiency drive was a plan to sell off the contents of the College library and turn it into a multi‑media resource centre.

But then Lane trips over a vital clue while browsing yet another musty tome: Edgar Allan Poe's Tales of Mystery and Imagination.

Friday,11 February 2011

Gripping new three‑part drama starring Trevor Eve (Waking the Dead, Framed) as an international hostage negotiator who takes on one of the toughest cases of his life when an apparently simple negotiation goes awry.

Joining Trevor Eve in this brand new series are co‑stars John Hannah (Rebus, Cold Blood) as threatening kidnapper Willard alongside Helen Baxendale (Marple, Cold Feet), Natasha Little (Mistresses, This Life), Emma Fielding (Cranford) and Patrick Baladi (The Darjeeling Limited).

With British businesswoman Naomi Shaffer (Fielding) still being held hostage, a local South African policeman, Inspector Lanning (Tumisho Masha), is keen to join forces with Dominic (Eve) to solve this case, but Dominic is wary. The amateur kidnappers have been superseded by a group that is much more professional, with a mysterious British man, Willard (Hannah), in charge. After tough negotiations with Dominic, Willard agrees to release Naomi, and Dominic brings Naomi home. Meanwhile, Dominic's demanding job is straining his relationship with his wife, Sophie (Little) and daughter. Dominic keeps an eye on Naomi after her return, suspecting she's holding something back, and late one night the kidnappers strike again.

Can We Help?

Saturday,12 February 2011

New Series

Can We Help? returns in 2011 connecting families and communities. Heading into its sixth series on ABC1, this year the program will brighten up your Saturday evenings at 6pm right before Gardening Australia. This first episode delivers a great mix of stories starting with the return of a precious war medal to grateful family members.

Over thirty years ago Mike Kinsella bought a shoebox of treasures at an antique flea market. As time passed the shoebox ended up on a back shelf and was forgotten about, until recently. On rediscovering the box Mike became intrigued with one particular item, an unusual medal awarded to Captain Malcolm Hipwell at the turn of the century. Mike embarked on his own search and was determined to make sure the medal ended up in the hands of the right people. He came to Can We Help? for assistance and after a thorough search found someone who is thought to be Captain Hipwell's closest living relative living in a nursing home in Melbourne.

This is a story about the kindness of an honourable stranger and a humble and proud elderly woman brought together through a chance find in a shoebox.

Also in the program, expert linguist Kate Burridge is on location at the WA State Library with host Pete Rowsthorn grilling her about certain mispronunciations ‑ like ‘basghetti’. Dr Norman Swan gives a controversial answer to the question 'What benefit does eating organic food have?' And Pete Rowsthorn heads out onto the streets to discover how people who are blind find their way around the city. He goes through vision impairment training and then joins twenty-year-old Sam Byrne, who has been blind since birth, for a brisk walk around Melbourne ‑ easy for Sam but frightening for Pete!
