CHECK-IN

Exploring Kassel The travel magazine Check-in reports from central Germany – from the city of Kassel in northern Hessen. Home to some 200,000 residents, the city is about 70 kilometers from the geographical center of Germany. Every five years, Kassel hosts what is probably the most important art exhibition in the world – the documenta. In the summer of 2017, it’s that time again. The works of key international contemporary artists will be on show in the central Friedrichsplatz square, the inner-city “Karlsaue” park, the Fridericianum, the documenta-Halle and at many other exhibition spaces. The entire town is dedicated to the appreciation of art, in an event that draws visitors to Kassel from all over the world. Check-in is keen not to miss out.

IN GOOD SHAPE

Running for a Longer Life Running is the world’s most straightforward sport. You don’t need a fitness studio, or any special equipment. This probably explain some of its popularity. Marathon events and oth-er races are taking place with increasing regularity across the world – even on the Great Wall of China, on the Arctic Circle, the Sahara or in the Alps. Running could also be the healthiest sport of all. A new study from the US has found that runners live longer! The study high-lighted statistics showing that one hour of running can extend your life for seven hours. Running protects against diabetes, heart disease and depression. But just as with any kind of physical activity, moderation is key. Other longer-term studies have also shown that those who run too often, too far, and above all too fast, are at greater risk. So how to strike the right balance? How best to get started? What are the pitfalls that should be avoided at all costs? First and foremost: How to ensure that running stays fun? In Good Shape reveals the top tips for runners and those with ambitions to join the global movement.

The Syrian Battlefield A camera team has been observing the work of the UN Special Envoy to Syria for the past six years. The result is a unique document on the background of the civil war. From Geneva, via Damascus and Mos-cow, to New York, the film provides new insight into what has been the bitterest diplomatic battle of the 21st century so far, one that is essentially leaving the Syrian people to their own fate. DW broadcasts the documentary film The Syrian Battle-field – The Whole World is Watching.
