Artistic talent in abundance for Kia-OraStudents of all ages have been having a go at designing a logo with a horse and sports theme for the 15th Upper Hunter Shire and Kia-Ora Youth Music Camp and Concert which returns to Scone from 16 to 18 March, 2016.The winning logo for 2016 came from Eleanor Wyndham in year four at Scone Public School. She will receive prizes including entry to the Camp and tickets to the 2016 Youth Music Concert. Founder and Youth Music Camp coordinator, Gillian Miles, congratulated Eleanor on her creative design.

During the popular annual event, hundreds of young performers will spend three days working and rehearsing with some amazing tutors and conductors, in preparation for a finale concert on the Friday night.

The camp is offered to students from year three through to year 12 from all schools across the Upper Hunter Shire. It is an excellent opportunity for budding musicians, as well as those who wish to try something new in the creative arts area. There are even places available for students who have no previous background in voice, dance or instrumental tuition. For further information contact Amanda Catzikiris on 6540 1153.Pictured above from left to right are Sarah Dart; Year 3/4 Hip Hop performance – (images are courtesy of David Hill) and the winning logo for 2016 by Eleanor Wyndham.

The Reluctant Jillaroo, (Allen & Unwin) is set in Scone NSW and will be launched from 10.00am to 12.00 noon on Saturday, 13 February 2016 at the Scone Library. The book is for ages 10 and upwards - think horses, a rollicking mystery and a bit of romance thrown in.

Upper Hunter Shire Mayor Wayne Bedggood said that he is excited to have Kaz back in the Upper Hunter Shire to launch her new book and hold a creative writing workshop’.

“Many of you will remember Kaz as she has previously been in the shire for International Women’s Day last year. Kaz was our guest speaker and also hosted a creative writing workshop.

“Young adults from our shire especially will love this book as it is set in our home town – it’s not every day we get that. There will also be copies available to purchase at the event,” Mayor Bedggood said.

After the book launch, Kaz will be making her way to Murrurundi to host a creative writing workshop titled ‘Hook the Reader and You’ll Hook the Sale’. This workshop will be held from

2.00pm to 4.00pm at the Murrurundi Library.

Her title Almost Dead, (Allen & Unwin) long listed for a Davitt Award with Sisters in Crime. ‘Dead, Actually’, her previous title in this series is the happy recipient of the ARRA Award for Favourite Paranormal for 2012, and the Aurealis Award for Best Young Adult Novel for 2012, and was also long listed for a Davitt Award in the children’s/young adult section.

Dividing her time between teaching and writing, Kaz formerly tutored Creative Writing for CSU’s Enrichment Program as well as teaching and creating courses for the Australian College of Journalism.

Bookings are essential for the book launch and the creative writing workshop. For the book launch, please call Scone Library on 02 6540 1183 and to RSVP for the creative writing workshop, please call Heather Ranclaud, Murrurundi’s Community Services Officer on 02 6540 1356 by 2.00pm Friday, 12 February 2016.

Luke Parkinson has done it again!Continued from front pageAlthough they didn’t win that event, it was a great achievement to make it to the open finals at such a young age.

Luke says, “I was excited about winning my first roping title as I’ve put in years of training in both myself and horses.”

“Winning the All-Round Cowboy is always a highlight as you have to be good at all your events to win it.”

It’s the second time Luke has won that title. He has won three Australian Steer Riding Championships, All-Round Junior Cowboy in 2012 and qualified for the Junior National Finals every year since he was eight years old.

Luke’s dream is to compete in the USA in the PBR and the PRCA rodeo circuits one day.

Fourteen year old Luke is part of the third generation of Parkinson’s to compete in the sport of rodeo, and if his past and current success is anything to go by, Luke will definitely fulfil his dreams abroad.

Scone Race Club will host its fi rst ever Country Championships Qualifi er on Sunday, February 21.Scone will stage the second of eight $100,000 qualifying races with fi rst and second in each heat heading to Royal Randwick on Saturday 2 April to compete for a $400,000 purse – increased $100,000 this year by Racing NSW – in the Country Championships Final (1400m).

In a further bonus for the Country Championships qualifi ers, Racing NSW has lifted prizemoney for supporting races at all Championships race days from $15,000 to $20,000.

“The involvement of Country and Provincial participants at The Championships has been very successful and with Racing NSW injecting a further $100,000 into each Final, the concept will be bigger and even more competitive than what it was in its inaugural year in 2015,” said Racing NSW Chief Executive, Mr Peter V’landys AM.

“Scone is a wonderful racecourse and it’s proven its ability to host a bumper meeting with its highly popular stand-alone Saturday race day each year, and the racing will be fi rst-class once again.”

Scone’s Country Championships Qualifi er can be contested by horses based in the Hunter and North West Racing Association’s jurisdiction that are Class 5 and below and have not started in more than 20 races prior to regional qualifying race.

Scone is offering free activities for the kids including a magician, waterslide, jumping castle and face painting.

The ‘Lawn Marquee’ is available at $25 per person which includes gate entry, reserved seating in the marquee, drink voucher and race book. A cash bar and TVs will be in operation in the marquee.
