There’s no denying that here in Louisiana we love a good story about the triumph of an underdog. Thus, the Saint’s victory last year was a triumph of epic proportions. The win was momentous for Louisiana and the city of New Orleans, which has struggled ever since Hurricane Katrina inundat-

ed the Crescent City, holding its unique culture hostage. Last year, after that final play, the four years of backbreaking work to rebuild and over-come justified the spirit and tenacity of our people to the world.

Little could anyone know that tragedy was brewing in the Gulf. Just about two months later, with the high of the win still lingering, another disaster threatened the way of life in Louisiana. For months our coast has been assaulted by the largest oil spill in history. Although the well is now capped, the ramifications and cleanup effort will continue for years to come. Again, we are faced with the job of rebuilding and preserving those qualities that make our state standout from every other.

Tailgating and showing support for our favorite team is just one of the many ways people cope with difficult times such as these. For that reason, and so many more, the expectation for this year’s football season is higher than ever. Here at NBC33 and FOX News Baton Rouge we strive to bring you all the highlights in a unique and creative way.

You may have noticed some changes with our broadcast in recent months. Most notable with our new anchor, Tammi Arender, who has returned to broadcast journalism after working as the Press Secretary for Attorney General Buddy Caldwell.

We’ve also made new additions to our team of reporters, so our coverage

of sporting events will increase as well. For example, you can expect to see Friday night coverage for every week. We will put the spot light on one area high school and keep you updated with all the final scores on our website, where you will also have the option to share your photos from the games.

In addition to our high school coverage, we will include a “Coach’s Cor-ner” segment. From answering questions to giving the highlights from all the big games, high school football is the beginning of great careers. Did you know that this year Louisiana was second per capita in players taken in the NFL draft? Looking at the current small stage is the best way to keep up with the future heavy-hitters.

Plus, it’s no longer a hobby – Fantasy Football has taken on a life of its own. In fact, a new website, www.who2start.com, is catering to the ever ex-panding population of people who are actively and passionately participate in the off-field sport. Now, we offer the same service. Every Thursday at 10 p.m. the guys will come by our studio to answer YOUR fantasy football re-lated questions. If you have a question, make sure to log on to our website.

The aroma of Super Bowl XLIV still lingers in New Orleans since the Saints grabbed the first NFL championship in franchise history, defeating the Indianapolis Colts 31-17 last season in Miami, Florida. The party in New Orleans has lasted well into the offseason and now the Saints are faced with holding on to the momentum and magic of their greatest season.

As the celebration continues on Bourbon Street, the players, led by Head Coach Sean Payton, prepare to bring another ring to their loyal and beloved city - the city that stood by their side through the unfortunate times. This “team-community” relationship is indeed a special one, unlike any other in the nation, with an unbreakable bond.

“I feel like there was a piece of everyone who wanted us to win that game,” quarterback Drew Brees said to NBC33 News during a book-signing in Baton Rouge. “We probably gained a lot fans just because they see the way we do things and they see the connection we have with our fans, and they see that’s special.”

The Saints now have one goal on there collective minds - repeating as back-to-back champions at Super Bowl XLV in Arlington, Texas. This is a task only accomplished eight times in NFL history and once in the past decade by the 2003/04 New England Patriots. Super Bowl hang over, however, is not in their vocabulary. The Saints will fight to avoid the same destiny that five of the last eleven Super Bowl champions missed during the postseason.

New Orleans begins the season respectably, returning 20 of the 22 starters from last year’s team - only linebacker Scott Fujita and running back Mike Bell are not returning. In order to return to the postseason, the Saint’s defense must find a way to ratchet down the offensive yards allowed last season. In 2009, New Orleans ranked 25th in yards, allowing 357.8 yards per game. Each unit is currently at its competitive maximum, according to Brees.

“It’s been as competitive of an offseason as I have ever been apart of. I said that last year, but I think this year has topped it,” he continued. “When you experience success, you feel like some guys might relax and don’t have the same hunger. That’s definitely not the case for this team.”

Giving the Saints solid depth at the corner are veteran Randall Gay and rookie Patrick Richardson. When the corners lock down their men on the outside free safety Darren Sharper, who grabbed nine interceptions and returned three for scores, can roam the middle and make plays for the ball.

As a former LSU alum Gay has a special connection to Louisiana. His passion for the game and love of the city epitomizes the “team-community” relationship that has kept fans in seats even when the

Saints faced the darkest hours. “People [in the community] see me so much now that I am normal

to them, and that’s how I want it to be,” Gay said when discussing his feelings about living in New Orleans. “[They think,] he’s always in the community, he’s going to be around here. I want them to see that you may look at me as Randall Gay the Saint’s player, but in real life he’s just like me and you.”

The Saints have a little bit of everything on their talented receiving team. Marques Colston is Brees’ go-to guy because of his tremendous body control and great hands. He is able to expertly adjust and secure Brees’ back shoulder throws on the run.

Deep threats for the Saints are Devery Henderson and Robert Meachem. Henderson, an Opelousas native and LSU alum, has emerged as a solid starter and Meachem has developed into a big threat in his third season. Slot receiver Lance Moore is one of Brees’ favorites on third down and is looking to start out strong after an injury filled 2009 season.

Two crucial receivers are Jeremy Shockey and David Thomas who combined for 83 receptions and 925 yards and four touchdowns last season.Shockey understands how lucky he is to have received a second chance to play in a Super Bowl after sitting out his first due to injury. Although he possesses two rings, Shockey’s leg injury held him out of his first championship appearance, when his former team, the Giants, defeated the Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.

“You always dream all the hard work you put in, you just hope to get to the [Super Bowl] game,” Shockey said to host Phil Anselmo during an interview for NBC’s Louisiana Sunday Kickoff. “After being able to play in the last bowl, it was

definitely humbling and it was a great experience. I’ll never forget it.”

On special teams, kicker Garrett Hartley proved he can keep a level head under pressure with his game winning kick in the NFC Championship Game. He has a powerful leg and is accurate from 50 yards and in hitting nine of his 11 attempts. Unfortunately, punter Thomas Morestead has struggled with inconsistency but was an asset on kickoffs ranking among league leaders in touchbacks.

Reggie Bush had a less than stellar year on punt returns and hopefully can regain his big play potential. Staying solid on kickoff returns is Courtney Roby who’s speed makes him a threat to go all the way if he can break the initial line of defenders.

Only time will tell if we’ll see another Black and Gold Superbowl. But as we all know – Saints fans aren’t fair-weather fans! We’ll back the “Who Dat” Boys on their journey.

A Look into the Future ...An interview with Les Miles

Football season is here for the LSU Tigers and while some are excited about the upcoming season, others are worried Coach Les Miles

doesn’t have what it takes to turn the team around after finishing 9-4 last season and losing three out of the last five games over the last two seasons.

Miles is confident the offense that finished last place in total offense in the SEC last season will be well improved this season, thanks in large part to more experience at the quarterback position.

“We have not in two years started a quarterback with a full season under his belt,” Miles said during a speaking engagement at the Rotary Club in Baton Rouge. “This’ll be the first year, the first year really that our first two quarterbacks will have experience.”

Those two quarterbacks Miles references are Jordan Jefferson and Jarrett Lee, who thanks to the departure of Zach Lee to the Los Angeles Dodgers, are the only two scholarship quarterbacks on the LSU football team this season.

Last season Jefferson did about as well as one might expect from a true sophomore with little game experience and a knack for holding the ball too long. With a year under his belt, and according to Miles a “pretty good offensive line,” there’s no reason to think Jefferson cannot improve from last year when he threw 2,166 yards and 17 touchdowns.

The weapons around Jefferson should be plenty to help the Tigers improve from ranking last in total offense in the SEC to at least somewhere in the middle of the pack. An improved offensive line could spark a more consistent running game, while also giving Jefferson the time to find deep threats Terrence Toliver and Reuben Randle down the field for some big plays.

While the offense has much room for improvement, the defense was a unit that held its own last year, finishing around the top of the SEC is several categories.

“Defensively, I think we’re going to be strong in the middle,” continues Miles. “I think Drake Nevis and

Kelvin Sheppard, and Pep Levingston moves in from end, and I think we’ve got some guys that can step in there and clog up that middle.”

Assuming those guys can “clog the middle” the outside is in good shape with All American cornerback Patrick Peterson locking down defenders and making big plays. Peterson led the team with two defensive touchdowns last season including an interception return for a score and blocked field goal recovery for a score.

The defense will have to come up strong early in the season while the offense builds their confidence, as there will not be much room for error with LSU’s first two games on the road. This is a first for LSU in more than twenty years.

Week one, the Tigers travel to Atlanta on September 4 to take on the North Carolina Tar Heels in the Georgia Dome for the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game.

The Tar Heels bring back one of the top defenses in the nation, including six players ranked inside the top 66 NFL prospects in college football.

With the added pressure from a stout defense, the Tiger offense will have to be mistake free and trust Jefferson to make the right decision and the right time.

“So what happens now is we just need to allow him to trust his preparation,” Miles said about Jefferson.
