CHOICES: Public, Privateor HOMESCHOOLING?

Their eager little eyes watch as the books are passed out. They pick up their pencils and are ready to begin. What will they learn today? Whether children are attending a public school, charter school, private school or home school, they may not know or care about the differ-ences between the various educational options available in Alberta but parents sure do.

There are four different types of “schools” in this province – public, charter, private and home school. What is a school? According to the School Act, a “school” means a structured learning environment through which an education program is offered to a student by (i) a board, (ii) an operator of a private school, (iii) an early childhood services program private operator, (iv) a parent giving a home educa-tion program, or (v) the Minister. Let’s look a little closer one of these CHOICES – HOMESCHOOLING!

Why do Families consider homeschooling? One of the common reasons why many families choose to home school – that is, to achieve better morals, values and a more cohesive family unit. Other reasons might include special needs or academic reasons. Many fi nd the classroom too crowded or that their children’s needs are not being addressed. There are as many unique reasons why families choose this option as there are families!

What do I need know? There are basically two further choices – (1) Parents can opt for “school-directed” program which can include online options, distance education, fully aligned, etc. (2) Or they can design their own educa-tion program with little or no support from the school. Each option has its own legal requirements.

Funding and Support? The Alberta government recognizes HOMESCHOOLING as a legal choice for families and supports this option! To receive government funding you need to register with a recognized authority before Sep-tember 30 of each year. It is through the school authority that funds are received and distributed according to their internal policies. It is also the school authorities’ duty to ensure that the requirements are being followed.

But your provider (authority) can do so much more. They can supply support, tutoring, student classes and enrichment, parent workshops, diagnostic testing, fi eldtrip opportunities and so much more!

How do I fi nd out more? The Phoenix Foundation has helped start hundreds of homeschooling families on their educational journey. We can help you too! We are conveniently located at 320 19 Street SE, Calgary. We are open to all learners from kindergarten to grade 12. For more information, please call us for a tour and tea or visit our website!

Tuxedo Park (April 14th) - Our AGM is one week away, and Tuxedo Park will have a new President next week. Please check back next month for our new President’s very fi rst message.

Th ank you to Gus Barron for all of your eff orts over the past few years! And welcome to your new role as Past President!

Let me buy you a coff ee!Hello Tuxedo! I am writing this one week before our March 21st AGM. I hope our AGM

goes well, and I hope we have a full, excited and eager board! I will summarize our AGM in next month’s Backyard Gazette.

Th is month, I would like to propose, that coff ee is going to help our community. Yes – coff ee!

Lately I have been wondering what we need to work on this year, and I am wondering what our community wants. In the same breath I have been wondering what it will take for volunteers to become involved. I know we have exciting things to accomplish this year, and we need people power to accomplish them all, and to do them well.

Our land lease requires a strategic plan. Our strategic plan requires a budget. Audits are

being completed. Fund development is a concern. Hall upgrades and community membership should be worked on. Community events (like our July 1st celebrations) require planners and committee members.

Have you been thinking about volunteering? Do you want to learn more and meet the people around the table? Then let me buy you a coffee, and we can chat.

I know from my own experience, that often times we want to volunteer, or try something new, but we just aren’t willing to jump in blindly. We need just a bit of information, we want to know some of the people in the group, We want to know that what we have to contribute is what the group actually needs.

I became involved with the community association because I had been thinking about it for a long time and then I finally had some room in my life to commit to helping. But that’s not what actually got me to sit at the table. What got me to my first meeting, was someone I knew asked me to come. She saw potential in what I could contribute, she created a safe and comfortable zone for me, and she introduced me to the volunteers and to the board, and it felt right.

If you have been thinking about joining the association in any type of a volunteer capacity, now is the time, Let’s meet for coffee! I will do my best to answer your questions, and I will introduce you to some pretty cool people who will be doing some valuable, rewarding and fun things this year. Please contact me: [email protected] or leave a message at the hall and I will call you back. 403-277-8689. Shannon Bowen-Kelsick

Safe Communities MeetingApril 17th – Safe Communities Meeting at Tuxedo ParkEveryone is invited to Tuxedo’s 2013 Safe Communities Meeting

on April 17th at 7:30pm. Speakers:

• Calgary Police Force Community Liaison Constable Will Johnson• Federation of Calgary Communities, Building Safe Communities Initiative - Stephanie Sokolowski• Recovery Acres (1835 House) Jim Calverley

The meeting will be a Q&A style meeting. Constable Johnson and Stephanie will share information on what we can do to report crime and deter crime in our neighbourhood. This is a very worthwhile meeting for every resident in Tuxedo. It will be very informative.

Avoid ER wait timesKnow your options.

It’s 6:00pm on a Friday and you develop flu symptoms that be-come progressively worse. You have a fever and sore throat and your family doctors’ office is closed for the weekend. You consider your options. You could go to the nearest emergency room, urgent care centre or walk-in clinic, but you’re not too keen on enduring the long wait times. You wonder: what other options are out there and what should I be doing at home?

If you have a health question or concern, you can call HealthLink Alberta (403-943-5465), a 24/7 telephone service providing health advice and information. An experienced HealthLink nurse can assess your symptoms, offer advice on self-care at home and help you find the right care in your community. For example, if you need to see a family doctor within 24 hours, the HealthLink nurse may offer you a same-day appointment at the After Hours Clinic.

Operated by the Calgary Foothills Primary Care Network, the After Hours Clinic provides free non-emergency medical care on weeknights, weekends and holidays. Unlike a walk-in clinic, you can relax in the comfort of your home until it’s time to go to your ap-pointment.

Afterwards, the After Hours Clinic will let your family doctor know what treatments you received. If you do not have a family doc-tor, the clinic will arrange for you to see a doctor for follow-up care.

The Calgary Foothills Primary Care Network is one of four Pri-mary Care Networks (PCNs) in Calgary. To find out which PCN you belong to and what other services you can access through your PCN, call HealthLink Alberta (403-943-5465).

For more information on Primary Care Networks, you can also visit albertapci.ca.

Rosemont School NewsFebruary and March were busy months at Rosemont School. Nordic

Skiing with the Foothills Nordic Ski Club took place during our An-nual Winter Carnival. We enjoyed student-led winter events, were vis-ited by Bonhomme and were treated to maple sugar treats. Our Artist

in Residence, Ewa, started with us in late February and worked with us until the end of March. In March, we enjoyed Family Movie Night!

April also looks to be an exciting, busy month. We will begin work with Decidedly Jazz Danceworks for five jazz dance sessions. On April 11th, the entire school will visit the Calgary Philharmonic Or-chestra for their presentation of “The Seasons: A Year in Music”. All of these events will take place along with a variety of class field trips, guest speakers and exciting learning opportunities.

Ward 9 Alderman’s MessageA very happy April to my neighbours in Tuxedo Park! I’m sitting

down to write this month’s report having come from a meeting with representatives of the City’s Planning, Transportation, and Real Estate (Office of Land Servicing and Housing) departments. I convened the meeting to introduce them to the consultant I’ve hired to undertake an analysis of the Transit Oriented Development (TOD) potential along Calgary’s next three major transit corridors.

We need to make sure that our decisions regarding the timing and funding of these lines are objectively based on the right criteria. Addi-tionally I am committed to ensuring that the stations of all three lines are deeply integrated into their surrounding neighbourhoods in a way that Calgary, to date, has yet to get exactly right.

The technical planning term for a deep integration between transit and the neighbourhoods it serves is Transit Oriented Development (TOD). TOD is a major reason behind the work I’ve been doing with Ward 9 community associations on the importance of Community Visioning. Successful intensification of our communities will only oc-cur if we get TOD right in conjunction with the arrival of these new transit lines. So, in addition to providing a scope of understanding for how much TOD potential exists along the three lines, the other major intent of the project is to provide communities with a visual discus-sion starter surrounding the question of how TOD could and should transform our individual neighbourhoods.

Many residents of Tuxedo Park were affected by flooding in sum-mer 2011. Councillor Carra has been working with the community and Water Resources to come up with a long term solution. As part of this work, a drainage study was undertaken last spring and sum-mer with a draft report filed in December of 2012. The final report is pending and Councillor Carra would like to invite you to join Water Resources and Team Ward 9 for a public meeting on May 1st, 7-8:30pm at the Tuxedo Park Community Hall to learn about the results of the study and next steps.

I look forward to reporting to you next time on the evolution in City Staff’s approach to Tuxedo Park’s main street, Centre Street, that I’ve been effecting through on-going interventions in the development approvals process. I know its a long way off, but I’m already looking forward to Tuxedo Park’s Canada Day Celebration, which one of my favorite community events of the year.

Don’t hesitate to contact your Team Ward 9 if we can be of any service at [email protected] or 403-268-5330.

Tuxedo Park (along with High Park and Winston Heights-Mount View) has been invited to participate in G.P. Vanier’s mural project with artist Dean Stanton.

The students of GP Vanier are making a community mural that will be displayed on the school fence (off Edmonton Trail between 31st and 32nd Ave.).

The mural will consist of over 300 pieces. Our community has been invited to help paint the pieces, some of

which will directly represent Tuxedo Park Community. Stop by High-land Park Community Hall (3716 2nd Street NW) on April 21st from 2:00pm till 5:30pm to help paint the mural. No experience necessary, just come by and try it. All ages welcome!

Spring Migration – You can Help!By Katherine Pederson – Tuxedo Park Resident

Spring migration will soon be in full swing, and Calgary and area will welcome back many species of song birds. Many of these birds will nest in our area, while some species will be “passing through” on their way further north. American Robins, House Wrens, Cedar Waxwings are just a few summer visitors that will raise their young in the many gorgeous old trees that Tuxedo has to offer. Blue jays, Nuthatches and House Finches are a few of our year-round species, and they too will be busy choosing mates and making nests.

The most effective way we can help these birds successfully care for and raise their families is to keep our cats inside, or supervised very closely if they absolutely must be outside. Keeping our cats inside not only protects the birds, it will help our furry friend’s live longer and healthier lives. Everyone wins!

Tuxedo Park... Back in the Day!

The Ralph I KnewReprint from March 03 article by Tom Minhinnett (1941-2006)

Ralph Klein was a true stalward member of the powerful Tuxedo gang. Ralph was a great athlete, he had played all star basketball at Balmoral, he was always picked fi rst on any team. He always knew how to pick who we needed on the team to win. He always picks his cabinet that way.

Th en on to three terms as mayor. He helped to bring us the 88 Olympics. Cut the ribbon three legs of the LRT. Th en on to Edmon-ton as premier. I always say that Don McKay put us on the map. Ralph keeps us there.

I met Ralph Klein at the Tuxedo Park School. Ralph and his broth-er Linnie grew up in Tuxedo Park and were the best pals you could ever meet. After the third grade he went to Buchannan and I went to Queen’s Park, only to meet up again afterwards, at the Balmoral School. Th e “Park” in Tuxedo, however was always our headquarters! Ralph was at home playing all-star basketball. He was always one of the fi rst picked to play on a team because he was fast and held his own

on the court. Later Ralph joined the Air Force and we didn’t see him for a while.

One of my fi rst jobs was as ‘the Singing Chef ’ at the Crossroads Hotel. One day a girl named Hilda, who had just started as a waitress, asked me if I’d like to meet her husband - Ralph Klein! Ralph had graduated from Business College and was working in Public Rela-tions for the Red Cross. He was doing a fi ne job.

After working as ‘the Singing Chef ’ for eight years, I went into nursing and even became a union leader. During this time Ralph joined CFCN as a reporter. I was proud to tell everyone the best re-porter in town was a pal of mine! Any news tips that I had I was sure to pass on to him. When I ran for the federal seat vacated by Eldon Wooliams Ralph interviewed me. When I lost he was also there to lend some inspirational words of consolation.

Ralph covered City Hall for CFCN and was trained well by the mayor at that time, Rod Sykes. When Ross Alger took over as mayor Ralph asked me what it would cost to run for alderman. I told him that it would be the same as running for mayor - $100. Ralph decided to take on the two giants of Peter Petrasak and the incum-bent Ross Alger.

During the election I took ill and was hospi¬talized at the Foothills. Always a car-ing friend Ralph came to visit me for lunch one day with his campaign manager Rod Love.

At that time campaign buttons were a no-no but as we walked down the hospital corridors they would fl ip up a collar to pass-ers-by, revealing the slogan “Time for Klein”. Th e rest is history. Tuxedo Park’s Don McKay became mayor and put our little community on the map; Ralph Klein has kept us there. In fact, he is also the second premier to hail from Tuxedo Park, the fi rst being Willia Ab-erhard.

Ralph has never forgotten his friends or his roots. He regularly turns up at our com-munity events to support us. Ralph - you were a great mayor and now a wonderful pre-mier - and always a great pal.

Your friend, Tom
