5. About tools and Palettes

Adobe PhotoShop is a powerful image editing program that allows you to edit and colorize images, retouch proofs and create original or composite artwork. Whether you're an art director, an electronic publisher, a photographer, an animator, a multimedia producer, or a service bureau, PhotoShop gives you the tools you need to get top-quality, professional results.

PhotoShop works with bitmapped, digitized images [that is, continuous-tone images that have been converted into a series of dots, or pixels]. You can bring images into PhotoShop by scanning a photograph, slide, or graphic [as we have already seen]; by capturing a video image; or by importing artwork created in drawing programs. You can also import previously digitized images -- such as those produced by a digital camera [again, as we have already seen] or obtained from a photo CD of "copyright free" pictures &/or graphics.

There are more than 40 tools available in the PhotoShop Tool palette. Describing all if them in detail would take up way too much space and probably bore you to death! So, for now, take a look at the tool palette [on the right] and don't worry about not knowing what some of them do. No doubt, as you work with PhotoShop and gain more confidence, you will discover -- through exploration and experimentation -- what most of the tools are capable of helping you accomplish.

Working With Text (CS3 version)

The Type tool lets you add text to your image. You can format the text in many ways, including font, size, style, color, alignment, horizontal or vertical orientation, kerning, leading, tracking, indenting, line spacing, and more. You can even stretch and warp the shape of the text in varied and interesting ways!

1. Horizontal Type Tool and Vertical Type Tool

Use Horizontal Type Tool (T) and Vertical Type Tool (T) to create horizontal or vertical type anywhere in an image. When you create type, a new type layer is added to the Layers palette. In Photoshop, you can also create a selection border in the shape of the type.

Depending on how you use the type tools, you can enter point type or paragraph type. Point type is useful for entering a single word. You can create point type by click in the image to set an insertion point for the type. The paragraph type is useful for entering and formatting the type as one or more paragraphs. You can create paragraph type by drag the tool to define a bounding box for the type.

2. Horizontal Type Mask Tool and Vertical Type Mask Tool

Horizontal Type Mask tool (T) or Vertical Type Mask tool (T) let you create a selection in the shape of the type. Type selections appear on the active layer, and can be moved, copied, filled, or stroked just like any other selection. For more information about working with selections
