Your Challenge: Bake something tasty and find the hidden maths.

What to do: 1. Cooking s so much fun! But did you know it involves a lot of amazing

maths too?

2. Work with an adult to bake something yummy. Need an idea of some rec-

ipes? Head to bit.ly/TSLrecipes to get some ideas. Have fun in the kitchen,

and then fill in the details below. What did you make, and what maths

skills did you think you used?

3. Don’t forget to then taste what you have made!

You will need: A recipe for something yummy

Ingredients

An adult to help you

Task: My Favourite Number

Your Challenge: How much do you know about your favourite number?

What to do: 1. What’s your favourite number? Write it down in the centre of a piece of

plain paper.

2. Note down at least 20 facts about the number around your number, cre-

ating a poster. Examples you could choose include factors, multiples,

even/odd, square number, sides on a shape etc.

3. For example, if your favourite number was 32, you could write down facts

like:

It’s a multiple of 1, 2, 4, 8 and 16

It’s an even number

32x2 = 64

4. Be as creative as you can with how you present your work.

You will need: A piece of plain paper

Colouring pencils or crayons.

Task: Fraction Hunting

Your Challenge: Can you find the fractions all around us?

What to do: 1. On a plain piece of paper, write ‘Fractions are all around us’ in the mid-

dle.

2. Fill the rest of the paper with places you have seen fractions in real life

over the holidays.

3. Perhaps you’ve been to the supermarket—can you see any fractions

there? Have you shared some cake over the holiday? I bet you used frac-

tions there too! Look carefully, and you will find fractions everywhere!

You will need: A plain piece of paper

Task: Money Problems

Your Challenge: Maths problems are everywhere! Can you write at least six worded problems

that involve money?

What to do: 1. You could base your money problems on ways you have used money dur-

ing the holidays, or you could totally make them up!

2. Try to write problems that involve different operations—could you create

problems that involve more than one operation? Bring in the sheet of

problems with your challenge sheet in September!

You will need: A sheet of lined paper

Task: What’s the Perimeter?

Your Challenge: Can you find the perimeter of your garden (or the garden of someone you know)?

What to do: 1. The perimeter is the distance around the outside of a shape or area?

2. To help you, draw a rough outline of the space you are measuring on a

piece of plain paper, and mark on the side lengths that you measure. Bring

this piece of paper in with you in September.

3. Think about how you are going to measure the side lengths, and what unit

you will use.

4. No garden? No Problem! Measure the perimeter of a room instead.

You will need: A tape measure or ruler

Birthday Chemistry

Every day, scientists do investigations and make observations in chemistry. These scientists

are called chemists. Chemists work out why materials have certain properties. They find out

how materials change in chemical reactions. They create new materials, with perfect proper-

ties for particular purposes.

What to do

Go to this website: http://www.rsc.org.uk/learn-chemistry/collections/chemistry-

calendar

Click on your birthday.

Fill in the form to show others in your new class why your birthday is important in

chemistry.

Hints;

Fill in the form in your own words.

If there is a word you don’t understand, ask someone for help, or look it up in a

dictionary or on the Internet.

You can draw a picture or find one on the Internet, print it out, and stick it on the

form.

Drawing

Practice Always

Makes Perfect!

A skills you will need in every D&T area is draw-

ing. Show us your amazing skills a show us some

examples of your best drawings.

If you’re stuck:

Why not look at tutorials on YouTube?

Draw objects from around your home.

Take pictures and try tracing them to get

used to the shapes.

Making

Get Creative!

In D&T we LOVE making things.

Are you doing anything over the summer holidays?

Do you have a family member that is doing some-

thing you can help with?

Take pictures of you on your own or helping out

to build and create something. This can simply be

a toilet roll project to building a new shed.

Textiles

Try out a few

life skills!

We also LOVE life skills in D&t. Part of that is

learning sewing techniques. BUT we also know that

lots of people do textiles crafting as a hobby—

especially during a long time off.

Take some pictures (or bring in examples) of some

textiles crafting that you have done over the

summer holidays. We really want to see what you

can do! (even if it is just sewing a button on!)

Cooking

Because … Yum!

Who doesn’t love food? Well, part of what we

learn in D&T is how to cook and the importance of

nutrition.

Over the holidays, why not show off your skills

and photograph some of the food you have made (or

helped with) over the summer holidays? This can

be from a simple beans on toast to a full on din-

ner for the family! Bonus points if you can turn

these photographs into a diary of how you cook

it—imagine you’re Jamie Oliver!

Welcome to The Victory Academy History Department. During your time at Victory you will

become young historians researching many historical events such as: The Tudors, WWI,

Local History and many more exciting topics.

We have set you some tasks to begin your journey into developing into a young historian.

Complete these over the summer, have fun and we look forward to meeting you in

September.

TASK 1

Family Tree -We would like to get to know you, so this task is asking you

about your family tree. Look at the example below and draw your own family

Task 2

What is a family Crest? - A family crest can also be known as a Coat of Arms or

Shield of Arms. Think of a crest like a trademark or custom stamp for your family.

Colour schemes and patterns also contribute to each crest's unique design. Even

the shield's overall shape --from round to square and all other variations --holds

meaning. There is usually a motto stamped or engraved prominently on the

crest. Each of these elements represent character traits that the family is known

for, such as strength, wisdom, leadership, agility and resilience. We want you to

research your family crest or design a new one for your family. Below is an exam-

ple of a family crest, in fact, here are some of our

Task 3

As a young historian you must understand that everything has a meaning. De-

scribe why you used certain colours, symbols etc. on your family crest? What

do they mean?.

Imagine trying to use words to describe every scene in a film, every note in a song, or every street in your town. Now imagine trying to do it using only the numbers 1 and 0. Every time you use the Inter-net to watch a movie, listen to music, or check di-rections, that’s exactly what your device is doing, using the language of binary code.
