Dear Readers, This issue of the Tusk is radically different from the 10 volumes preceding it and while the concept of breaking convention was initially met with hesitance, I feel the following pages prove that its worth taking risks and that its even more important to challenge tradition. Since its inception, Tusk has taken the majority of its

content from the Advanced Magazine Writing course offered in the fall, its pages composed mostly of feature articles and illustrations. We wanted the first issue of the decade to reach a larger demographic, to become a magazine that would have something for everyone. We decided to forgo having a theme, a formula that many of the volumes before us followed, and instead expanded our content to include music, art, food and fashion departments. Weve included photo essays, an editorial and even a top 10 list. In this issue youll find articles covering everything from a young Indian woman detailing her experience of having an arranged marriage to how to make your own sushi roll. Youll read about a Kurdish man who felt like an alien in his own country and a young boy who habitually sought solace in drugs. In From the Vault, youll see what our staff photographers capture when they arent on assignment and in our 10-page band section,

youll read about three very different groups with equally distinctive sounds. From Day One, it has been our mission to turn the online companion, www.tuskmagazine.com , into something bigger and bolder than ever before, and with the introduction of online exclusives and behind-the-scenes footage, I think weve done just that. Only time will tell if weve pioneered the way for the next generation of Tuskers to stray from tradition and make their magazine a personal reflection of the entire staff and the writers who contributed to it. In our case, I cant imagine doing it any other way.

Gen. Barzani's guest.The helicopter landed 100 feet away from

Salah. He felt excitement running through his veins. He wondered who the special guest could be. He came in a helicopter. He had to be a big deal. A comrade, Kanabi, looked at Salah.

Who do you think it is? Kanabi said.

It has to be someone really good or someone really bad! Salah replied.

Why do you think that? No one just comes in a helicopter for no

reason.But why do you say it could be someone

really bad?Because I hope it is. Why?It is more important to know the face of

your enemy than the face of your ally. Your

enemy is the reason you're fighting. If you want to see your ally, well, look in the mirror. Then Vice President Saddam Hussein stood shivering from the cold air that hit his face

as he stepped out of the helicopter. Salah thought to himself, Wow, this is getting powerful. Saddam is defecting and becoming part of the Kurdish Revolution.

A couple of days later, at the academy, the students turned on the radio to hear the president of Iraq, Ahmed, Hassan al-Bakr, say, We have reached an agreement with our brothers, the Kurds. From now on we will be living in our country not only as brothers, but as partners, forever. Hundreds of rifles went up in the air in the ensuing excitement. Salah looked over at a comrade.

We're going home! I'm going to Kirkuk! We don't have to go to school in this cave anymore!
