Just click this link in the top right hand corner! - Mike Woodard Bama held off the Red- wolves, now it’s the LSU Tigers turn. Your intrepid reporter will be head- ing down to the Tiger’s den, death valley, to witness this monumental game. Bama, for the first time since 1980 ranked number one in the polls mid season, will face a very capable, #15th ranked, LSU team. Bama is number one! Thanks to a stunning game between Texas and Texas Tech which ended with a breath holding finale. Texas, with one missed, barely dropped interception, left the door open for Tech to come from behind to win...and they did with no time left on the clock. I actually expected the polls to have Penn State jump us. Polls being polls, but, Bama’s on top. Florida annihilated Georgia to take the top spot against Bama in the SEC championship game, should Bama beat LSU, Miss State, and Auburn. I’m not dis- counting Miss State or Auburn,...but all things considered, LSU is the only team that should even have a chance to beat Bama. LSU is not near the team that won the championship last year...but they know our coach! Imagine that? And they would like nothing better than to defeat Bama in that den of iniquity in their swamp stadium. I’ve been in this bowl of screaming, thrash- ing, malodorous, gnarly fans before...and it isn’t a pretty sight! Unless….we get them quiet with a few touchdowns. Hey, that worked in Tennessee! Although the Red Wolves were no- where near a contender team, this past weekends game was the second this year where Bama played the entire game. I be- lieve that Nick Saban, a man who seldom smiles, is the right man to keep this team grounded after they see that they are “#1”. Many college kids could start thinking that means something. And it does, but not what most people think. It means Bama has positioned itself to be the champion. No one can take that away without a fight. The only poll that counts is the one at the end of the season. This one will be long forgotten...just as Texas was number one last week and that will soon be forgotten. Let’s see...who can tell me who was number one before Texas this mid-season...my point is made. The only good thing about being number one is this...if you keep winning you get the chance to play in the championship game and no one can take that away from Bama as long as they keep winning. Many other teams, who have lost a game, will not get that opportunity. That is the ONLY good thing about being number one for Bama at this point in the season. If Bama loses now...they will not get to play in the cham- pionship game. Come back teams, like Flor- ida, they can only get to the championship game through Bama. Penn State has their destiny in their hands too. If Bama contin- ues to win, and beats Florida, look for them to face Penn state in the BCS championship game. If Bama wins out the rest of the sea- son, and beats Florida in the SEC champi- onship game….no one will doubt their right to be there. But, there’s a lot of crawfish to fry between now and then. I’m going with my good friend Tony Onellion who owns the Bargains Plus in Slidell, LA on his LSU sea- son tickets. So I’ll be that little red dot in a sea of yellow. Look for me on TV….I should stand out! Bama can win this one. Bama should win this one. Bama has a better team than LSU. But, LSU doesn’t know that! Bama has to play their best game yet. I be- lieve they’ll win in a tough one. Bama 24— LSU 17 -Mike Woodard Surely there has never been a mayor of Tuscaloosa more energetic and focused on the fu- ture than current Mayor Walt Maddox. The list of projects in progress or on the drawing board are a testament to the man’s zest for the job. I spoke with Walt after he spoke at the Tuscaloosa Rotary Club this week. He’s a man of many ideas. It’s not just that since Maddox has been mayor $1.5 bil- lion in new construction projects have been completed in Tusca- loosa, it’s that another $1 billion is on the drawing board or under way. The planning goes far into the next administration...so if Walt isn’t re-elected, somebody better be ready to take hold of the reins. And, it’s not that the City of Tuscaloosa has been wildly spending it’s revenue. Last year the city ended up with a $3 million surplus in it’s budget...perhaps the federal government could take a lesson. Some of the success is attributed to the Alabama football program, which brings in an extra $12.7 millions for every home game. Some would say it’s the in- crease in students at the Univer- sity of Alabama, which generates $4 million new dollars for every 1,000 increase in student popula- tion. Other’s might point to the mid-town project which repre- sented a $120 million construction job and lot’s of new jobs in those retail outlets. Whatever it is, obviously all of these, it makes having future projects possible in our city that otherwise could never be. Mayor Maddox has plans to take those successes and build upon them. Be it education, where he supports a new pre-school literacy program. Or crime, where he supports build- ing new police stations and brought in a brilliant new police Chief Anderson. Or perhaps the new river front development of a farmer’s market and amphitheatre. The list of future developments go on and on for Maddox. We’ll have the new Legacy Condo and retail development with an estimated construction cost of $110 million next to Bryant Denny Stadium. The new federal building downtown will represent at least another $200 million. Check out the new Bryant Drive “StreetScape” due to open later this year, it will be followed by another “StreetScape” on 7th and 23rd to 21st. The new #13.5 mil- lion downtown parking deck/park will alleviate much of the parking congestion downtown, and will beautify the downtown area too. And, it will be convenient to the new federal building and the other new projects going on downtown. Maddox does not believe that government is the only an- swer. That’s why he’s started a new faith based initiative named the “Hope Initiative” to involve churches in solving community problems. Preachers will be rid- ing with police to see where the crime is in the neighbor- hood of their churches so that the church and congrega- tion can get involved in solving crime and social issues in the area of their churches. It all adds up to this. Mayor Maddox is a rolling ball of thunder when it comes to Tusca- loosa’ future. As far as I can tell...Tuscaloosa’s in very good hands, and it’s only going to get better. BE SURE TO HUG A VETERAN -Mike Woodard These are the men and women who paid for our freedom. They carried the heavy load in battle or in battle support serving in the military...and Novem- ber 11th is our day to cele- brate and honor them. There are those who serve for something more than themselves...we honor them on Veteran’s Day. Many think of congress- men or clergy when they think of service...but try putting yourself in the line of fire for your country and see how much adrenaline flows through your sys- tem...do that and you’d be in the boots of these brave souls. Tuscaloosa’s

7-Day Forecast

NOV. 7—

NOV. 13

This Week’s Local Forecast Weather Trivia

Finally….it’s over. Maybe when we turn on the TV there will be something besides the election. This one got ugly…as bad as I’ve ever seen. I guess about half of America is happy, and the other half is un-happy with the outcome. I’m just happy the outcome has come out. Maybe we can move on to the next subject? I hope so. Let’s do that here. There’s always a “what’s next”. I’m not one to believe that our success is dependent on the government anyway. Those who were work-ing doing something that’s no longer in demand have to find something that needs doing...and get to doing it. The gloom and doom sayers always talk about the loss of what was. They did when they were making horse wagons and started making cars. They did it when steam engines turned to diesel or gasoline. They’re doing it now with oil running dry...and new energy sources wait-ing to be tapped. Always the flow of America’s economy has been to find what’s next and get to work doing it. Sometimes we wonder what “next” is. And yes, sometimes government has to help give it a little push. But it’s there in front of us. And as it happens the rest of the economy goes with it. As this “new next” comes about, much of the long standing economic en-gine revives. The economy feels like we all do from time to time. Some days we feel like jumping around in leaps and bounds and others we just want to stay in bed. There will be those who did not prepare for the “sickly” days. There will be those who don't know how to react to them. But there will be others. There will be others who see a new opportunity. They are future seers. They seem to be able to look around corners and far ahead. They always amaze me. I think...after a while...why didn’t I think of that?!?! They become titans of industry, billionaires, household names. Sometimes their rein lasts for a long time, sometimes just a while...for there is always another “what’s next” beyond the one of to-day. It seems to be the cycle of mankind...from the rock, to bronze, to copper, to iron, to steel, to titanium...from sail, to steam, to diesel, to nuclear...from smoke signals, to telegraph, to phones, to satellites...from abacus, to calculator, to computer, to internet...from witch doctor, to physician, to neurosurgeon. There is always a next. We have to have faith in ourselves. We have to believe in what is next and that there is one, that it will transport us, that it will deliver us. And it is not found in political or religious leaders….it is found within “US”...we are the origin of “next”. A man trying to find a way to grow his crops faster, a man trying to manage his business better, a man try-ing to transport goods quicker, a man trying to create products that are better and cheaper, stronger longer lasting, prettier, lighter, more effi-cient. Innovation, born from the mother of invention...is in those who seek it. And sometimes hard times are needed to spur that desire...for a lack of something inspires the needy to perform, to innovate, to think, to create. The election is over...good. Now people can quit thinking of what government is going to do and start thinking about what they are going to do with themselves. New giants will arise...will you be one of them? Tuscaloosa, our home, it as good a place as any I can think of to find what’s next. It’s in our University, our industry….and your DNA. Mike Woodard, Publisher Tuscaloosa Sun

Do you have a child that has just recently started college? If so this may be an extremely hard time in your life and your child’s right now. You may of just realized that you child is no longer a kid and that they an adult now. Although we always want the best for our children there are some things we should keep in mind. There are a lot of dos and don’ts if you have a child that is in college. Need some tips as a parent? Read below and see if what you’re doing is wrong or right. Watch what you say – As parents we often see our child’s strengths. We can see what they would be good and what they could do really well in as a career. Although we can see these things we can’t stress them on our children. A child who is in college most likely knows what the want to do and what they have a passion for. You can simply say “you’d be really good in that career” but don’t force and kind of career on them. Also, never try to make them feel guilty for not choosing the career you think they should do. Classes – You want to make sure that you never choose your child’s classes. Your child knows what they like and will take the classes they prefer. If you choose your child’s classes you may be choosing classes they really don’t need or classes they don’t want. If your child doesn’t like the classes you choose for them they may do poorly in them and leave you angry for failing. So be sure to never choose their classes they are an adult now and can choose them themselves. Consider a community college – If your child is going local or going away you should always consider a community college for the first two years. Going to a community college for the first two years can save you a ton of money on your tuition. The first two years are usually all general education classes and can be taken at a community college for less money. This is definitely something you should consider if you have a tight budget. Advisors – Let your child know that the advisors at college will be like their best friend. If your child knows what they want to do, then have them talk to and advisor. What an advisor does is they will tell you want classes you need and what classes you don’t need. You don’t want to waste your money and your child’s time. Speak up – When your child is in college they often have a lot going through their mind. Try talking to your child and see how school is going for them. Don’t be a pest and ask their grades all the time but ask how they like the class instead. Asking how they like the class will show them that you care and think of them. Get famil-iar with them and know what classes they are taking. This will help when they go to tell you a story, you will know what they are talking about. Ask them how they are doing and speak up. As parents we want the best for our children. Although that is a good thing, it can sometimes be a bad thing. Let your child be their own person and never try to force them to do anything they don’t want to do. If your child has a passion for something that is all they need to succeed.

Which stop smoking treatment is the best one for you to spend your time and money on? It’s no secret that the stop smoking industry is one of the biggest around. There are so many products out there today, it can be quite a challenge determining which is best to help you stop smoking. What often times happens is that people get paralysis by analysis simply by going through the different products available, and as a result end up giving up on their attempt to stop smoking. Don’t let this happen to you. Here are some tips to help you cut through the clutter now. The first thing I’m going to tell you might surprise you a bit, but it’s definitely true-the treatment you get is not the determining factor in whether or not you succeed in stopping smoking- you are. Quite simply, the treatment is important, but you can succeed with a bad treatment, and fail with a good one, if you don’t have one element-desire. This is one of the most important factors in helping you stop smoking, because if you truly don’t want to and aren’t 110% committed, you just won’t achieve your goal. It’s really that simple. While a stop smoking treatment will deal with the mechanics of your smoking addiction, it won’t deal with the mental. If you don’t really want to quit, you won’t do so regardless of how good the treatment you get. Therefore, that’s the first step. Remember this one thing-failure isn’t an option. Keep picturing what you’re life would look like without smoking, the incredible benefits you will enjoy, and think about them the next time you are tempted to reach for the cigarette. Chances are, this thought will be enough to stop you in your tracks. With that said, there are many different ways you might explore. A quit smoking shot, laser, patch, and gum have all proven effective at helping you to stop smoking. While it is a bit expensive (around four hundred dollars) I’d recommend you go with the shot, as it gets right the heart of the issue by preventing your brain from even recognizing nicotine, which obviously prevents you from craving it. It does this by cutting off the nicotine receptors from reach the brain, and therefore the brain doesn’t even recognize it. If the brain doesn’t know what it is anymore, it can’t be addicted to it anymore. This has proven very effective at helping many stop smoking. We also recommend you think about the reasons you first started smoking. Chances are, it was in response to some sort of stress that occurred in your life at the time you firs started, and however temporary, smoking gave you a way to stop thinking about it for a time. If you don’t understand why you first started smoking, you won’t be able to prevent the next negative habit from coming up to take it’s place. If you do understand what caused it, on the other hand, you can know how to develop a better habit the next time some sort of stress invades your life, and be much more effective at dealing with it. Of course, before you do anything else, make sure to check with your doctor on which stop smoking treatment is best for you.

- TREES, Fall is the best time of year to transplant trees. Be sure to mulch heavily around the root ball to prevent the ground from getting too cold for the roots. If you like to have live Christmas trees it’s a good time to dig your hole for the root ball, then you won’t have to dig it during the holiday season when you feel more like making family time or need to do holiday shopping. Don’t fertilize trees now, they are going dormant and don’t need the stimulation. You’ll be doing that next spring when they are ready to break out. When you transplant trees be sure to saturate the ground with water when you plant and once per week until a hard freeze. Ever greens espe-cially need water before freezing because they don’t uptake water during freezes. It’s not a good time to prune trees, again, it’s best to wait until spring after freezes. If you have tropical trees outside that can’t be moved cover them with blankets during freezes to try to protect them. Some people can keep tropical trees alive for years doing this, others let die each year and replace them, or have them planted in pots they move inside. Mistletoe is a holiday favorite, but if you want to ride your tree of it cut the limb it’s on two feet back from the infestation.

(SPM Wire) It's something we all get nearly every day. Junk mail is a nuisance for many consumers who receive daily postcards, flyers, specially-marked envelopes and pre-approved credit card offers. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, Americans throw out more than four million tons of junk mail every year -- and what is one man's gar-bage is an ID thief's goldmine. A Javelin Strategy and Research survey theft esti-mates that 8.1 million Americans became victims of ID theft in 2007; with nearly half a million cases of ID theft occurring as the result of stolen mail. "Many people view junk mail simply as a daily nuisance, but if credit card offers and catalogs are heading to the trash can in tact, that unwanted mail can be-come a much more sinister problem," said Steve Cox, BBB spokesperson. "Preventing ID theft perpetrated through the mail requires the two-step approach of reducing the amount of junk mail received, as well as shredding any sensitive mate-rials, such as credit card offers." BBB recommends consumers always shred important documents and take the fol-lowing steps to reduce the amount of junk mail they receive: * Pre-Approved Credit Card OffersPre-approved credit card offers are easy targets for identity thieves who can use these offers to open fraudulent credit ac-counts. Stopping these offers can help reduce the chances of identity theft. To "opt-out" of receiving pre-approved credit card offers for at least five years, and perhaps permanently, consumers can call 1-888-5-OPTOUT (567-8688) or visit: www.optoutprescreen.com. This service is offered by the three major credit reporting bureaus, Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. Consumers will be asked for personal information, including name, address, birth date and Social Security Num-ber. This information is only used to process requests and remains confidential. This procedure will need to be followed for each adult family member. * Direct Mail Offers: Direct Marketing Association (DMA) is a trade group with 5,200 member companies that use telephone, mail, and the Internet to pitch their products directly to consumers. To stop receiving mailings from DMA mem-bers, consumers can go to dmaconsumers.org/cgi/offmailing. DMA regularly up-dates its list, but companies it notifies to remove names from their mailing lists may take as much as six months to stop solicitations. * Catalogs: Consumers' mailboxes often can be overrun with catalogs - even if they've never shopped with the company before. This is likely because the con-sumer has, at some point, made a catalog or online purchase with a company that handed over contact information to Abacus, an alliance of catalogue and publishing companies. To stop individual catalogues, consumers can contact the specific com-pany in question. To stop mass mailings, consumers can e-mail [email protected], or write to Abacus, Inc., P.O. Box 1478, Broomfield, Colorado 80038.

I am convinced that the new economy of American must be based on creating our on energy sources. I call on our Univer-sity professors, our industrial leaders, and our government to put Tuscaloosa on the map by taking the leadership roll...not just for our community, but for the nation. Part of the presidential election was a conversation about what are we going to do about our dependence on foreign energy sources. Both candidates said their top priority was energy inde-pendence. Tuscaloosa has a university which could be instrumental in the development of new energy technology. The university could also become a leader in helping industry to manufacture that new energy development technology. Wind power needs turbines produced. Water power needs generators. Solar power needs panels and films produced. Geo thermal needs drilling and heat extraction technology. The future is in our hands. There is no reason for people to be unemployed when there is so much work to be done. There is no need for economic downturns or people going without. America is the innovator nation. We have to innovate new energy production techniques and implement them. And I can’t think of a better place to benefit from that new, next genera-tion, technology than good ole Tuscaloosa Alabama. The world of academia...the egg head professor group, need to stop being professors for a while and start being future thinkers...and they need to bring rise to another generation of students who think like that rather than hashing over everything old. When I went to college much of what I learn and spend my time on was a fer piece from “what’s next”….they had me learn-ing, mostly, what was already known. Now, it’s great to know about the past. And much of the past leads to the future, building upon that past success. But, there is simply too much time spent by students learning that which won’t help the future. It’s time for that to end. Not just in our higher education, but in high school as well. It’s part of the reason students get bored and drop out! The future is ours. It’s right in front of us. Alabama, and Tuscaloosa, need to seize upon it. Carpe Diem.

With Mike Woodard

Carl Edwards did it again! Amaz-ingly, for the past four years the winner of the Atlanta race went on to win the Texas race. Carl did it three years ago and again this year. Last year it was Jimmy Johnson. Johnson still leads in the cup race, around 100 points ahead of Edwards, but Edwards sure closed the gap with these two consecutive wins. Gordon came in second in Texas, but he’s so far behind in the points that he’s out of the cup race. It looks like Johnson will take the cup for a record third consecutive time, unless Edwards continues to win races like Texas. Johnson came in 17 in Texas which hurt his points standings compared to Ed-wards. Edwards made the win with va-pors in his tank having run over 100 miles on his last tank. Earnhart tried to use the same trick but three laps out ran out of gas,

coasted to the pit and finished way down the list. Gordon also ran on a dry tank, but it worked for him to gain his second place finish. It’s kinda strange to watch the winner being passed by the rest of the field trying to squeeze that last lap out of the tank. Edwards dropped down to around 7,000 rpms to save fuel. That also saved him from having to hit his brakes. I guess we could all learn from Edwards how to squeeze fuel mileage by reducing the amount of braking and driving slower to save fuel. This Sunday it’s Phoenix Arizona for the Checkers O’Reilly Auto Parts Penn-zoil 500. It’s a one mile tri-oval compared with Dega’s 3 miles and Texas 1.5 mile tri-oval. It’s tighter quarters on a shorter track and other racers might get in the act on this one. Sunday, 2:45 pm race time.

I hate to be right so much of the time...but I called Ole Miss beating Auburn. Auburn is just going to end the season at a loss. They’ll face UT Martin in Auburn this Saturday, and they’ll win this one, big, but it’ll be the last win of the season for Auburn as they face Georgia then Alabama. Ole Miss is a very powerful team this year, and as it’s only Nutt’s first season there, look out of Ole Miss next year...most of that power will be back. Nutt is going to be a factor in the SEC over time. There is a lot of talk about Tuber-ville being fired...but Auburn has a contract with him that would play him around six

million, I think, if they decide to move on...and I just don’t see that happening. That’s a lot of cash to get rid of a coach who’s been winning every year….until now. I see Tuberville re-establishing himself, somewhat, next year, but still don’t think Auburn will be up to snuff for two more years. I also think the SEC is getting ever more intensively competitive. Perhaps the entire BCS is getting tougher as the play-ing field levels. Yet, coaching from Saban and others of his caliber will make any coach who isn’t working 24/7 harder. This game, Au-burn 35 UT Martin 17

Thomas Jefferson once said that the key word in regard to the Greek and Roman gods was power, in regard to the Old Testament was fear, and in regard to the New Testament is love. Whether you agree with the first two, it is hard to dispute the third. Love is the major theme of the New Testament. Jesus continually taught his disciples about love. Love your neighbor as yourself, love one another, love your enemies, do unto others as you would have them do unto you. The books written by John are centered on love. And Paul penned perhaps the most famous passage on love ever written, 1st Corinthians, Chapter 13. “Love is patient (suffereth wrong), love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude (does not behave...unseemly), it is not self seeking, it is not easily angered (provoked), it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects (beareth all things), always trusts ( believeth all things), always hopes, always perseveres (endureth all things). Love never fails (1st Corin-thians 13:4-8a , NIV; words in parens, KJV).” It is easy to see that the love Paul speaks of here is not the debased definition of the word the modern, secular world has imparted to it. This, rather , is love in its truest sense: the love that comes from God and is implanted in our hearts and imprinted upon our minds. This is a love which we, as the imperfect creatures we are, can seldom attain, but which is immeasurably worthy of striving for. And in that striving, we must not forget that is usually unattainable without a close and constant relationship with the Lord, for it is the love of the Lord about which this passage is written. In this present age of turmoil and uncertainty, love is the answer we need to reach out for. It is the love which will bind and sustain us– both the love of god for us, and the love which we have, and exhibit in actions and words, for one another. In the King James version of the scriptures, this word, love, is translated “charity”. Taken together, these two words, love and charity, help us to understand the kind of love Paul is talking about, for the love without charity is not love at all. Neither is charity without love. It appears that we may be facing darker days ahead in our beloved Country, and around the world. It is a time, even if we come to a point of poverty in our own lives, in which the love expressed in Chapter 13 of 1st Corinthians will be our strength and our refuge, as we love one another in accordance with God’s will Yours in Christ, Tom

I’ve noticed that the longer a person deer hunts the fewer bucks he actually kills. In my own life, I’ve narrowed the reasons down to three and not necessarily in this order. First is simply for management reasons. That is, little bucks if left alone become big bucks. And it’s much easier to tag a doe if I just need to put some meat in the freezer. Secondly, once you’ve taken some larger bucks, it’s hard to settle for smaller ones. And thirdly, I just don’t want to spend the three hours after the shot, tracking, field dressing, dragging, and getting that deer to the processor. So I wait and come home most of the time empty handed. Now, I’m not against anyone else taking smaller bucks. I believe one of the reasons that the hunting population is declining is because the restrictions in some states are so narrow that many begin-ning hunters just simply get tired of the pursuit. And since the lifespan of deer is relatively short, there will always be more to take their place. So we all need enjoy each other’s harvest. As I have gotten older, what gets my heart racing is different from my first days in a tree stand. I’m more disciplined, determined, and settled on a buck of a certain size. The smaller ones are no longer a temptation. I enjoy seeing them, but they do not distract from the ones that matter to me. I really want my spiritual life to be the same way. It bothers me immensely that some “seasoned” Christians still get wrapped up in things that don’t matter. They are still frolicking around in things that have no eternal significance.

Churches divide because folks who ought to be mature are simply old. Even though they have been in the field for a long time, they are still chasing spikes. And we wonder why our churches are declining as well.

Spikes equate to things like the color of the carpet, who will make up a committee, what clothes must we wear, and is my name on some plaque. These are things that just don’t matter in the grander scale of things. And while we are so enamored with these lesser things, the big ones are getting away. No, all churches are not this way, even though ever church will have its self-appointed spiritual policeman or police woman. But thank God that there are still many good men and women who are not chasing every little button buck that comes their way. They instead, have grown and moved on, and have realized that spikes and the really big bucks don’t travel the same path and each one of us has to decide which path he will set his stand over.
