“Energy is the most valuable commodity of
modern society; it is the engine that drives
our civilization”.

• Global energy demand is rising.• Current energy requirements met using fossil fuels.
• Fossil fuels are non-renewable and unsustainable
& increase energy security risk.
• Over-reliance on fossil fuels also leads to high
energy prices.
• Burning fossil fuels release greenhouse gases
(GHGs) into the atmosphere .• GHGs trap the sun’s radiation in the atmosphere
leading to global warming.

• Convert light energy from
the sun using solar cells
into electrical output.
• Solar products include:
ordinary solar panels solar cookers
solar geysers
solar roofing tiles
solar window panels
solar phone chargers
solar lighting systems
solar powered traffic lights
Solar Energy
Integrated solar tiles installed by Solar Century
on a development in Milton Keynes by English
partnership and Bloor homes

• Convert kinetic energy from the wind using wind
turbines into electrical output.
• Wind products include:
wind farms for electricity generation
wind powered water pumps for wells / boreholes

• Kinetic energy of water rotates turbines whichgenerate electric energy.
• Under normal conditions, hydropower accounts for
50% of Zimbabwe’s national electricity output.
Hydroelectric Energy
The Kariba Hydropower
Station is Zimbabwe’s mainhydroelectric power plant.
It has a power generation
capacity of 750 megawatts
of electricity.

• Energy innovation is essential, it is the first importantstep in the right direction.
• However, innovation if not supported, is insufficient to
guarantee us a sustainable energy future.
• Many other inputs must be coordinated if we are tosuccessfully address our energy challenges.
• There is need to create the right environment for
innovation through:
supporting R&D initiatives (research funding)
supportive policy framework (renewable energy policy)
developing competent human resources (training)
infrastructure development
