TURNAROUND SCHOOLS:

The U.S. Department of Education’s School Improvement Grant program provides funding to state educational agencies that, in turn, make competitive sub-grants to districts.

Districts must demonstrate a great need for support and a strong commitment to use funds to substantially raise the achievement of students in their lowest-performing schools.

On average, proficiency rates in schools receiving support from the SIG program have increased in both math and reading.– 39 percent of schools demonstrated gains of

10 percentage points or more in math – 30 percent of schools demonstrated gains of

SUPPORTING TURNAROUND SCHOOLS:

The School Turnaround AmeriCorps program is a collaborative effort to increase high school graduation, college readiness, and educational attainment for students in our nation’s persistently lowest-achieving schools.

The $15 million initiative represents a partnership between the U.S. Department of Education and the Corporation for National and Community Service.

TURNAROUND SCHOOLS:

As a recipient of federal School Improvement Grant funds, Kit Carson College Preparatory Academy in Clark County, Nevada has focused on improving student achievement through several avenues, including: – Extended learning time, – Improved professional development,

and – Outreach to parents.

After the first year of turnaround efforts, Kit Carson now has more parent volunteers, and the attendance rate at parent-teacher conferences has increased from 75 percent in 2009-2010 to 98 percent in 2010-2011.
