Normally, we make an appliqued or embroidered square/rectangle, and then build the block and/or project around it. However, this month for the quilt and wall hanging, will piece the blocks first, and then add our applique/embroidery designs so they extend into the pieced part of the block. I think this is a fun and interesting way to make our blocks! So, you will notice that the Cream square by itself will actually be too small for the background. If you want to use the designs in another project without piecing blocks first, remember that you’ll need to cut your Cream squares larger to start (start with a 10” square, then trim to 8 1/2” after you complete the applique/embroidery.) For the wall hanging- You will notice that the turkey on our wall hanging does not have tail feathers. That’s because we are going to add them on Thanksgiving day! You will find a document full of feather designs that you can print out onto paper or lightweight cardstock. Print them out and cut out on the line. Have everyone write something they are grateful for on a feather and then use pins to tack them to your turkey. I think it’s both a fun and meaningful Thanksgiving activity. Finally, for the towels- I found this idea on Pinterest and thought it was adorable! Who hasn’t made handprint turkeys? What a fun way to memorialize those little handprints (or even your own!) on a towel. You could also use this technique on napkins, placemats, even a wall hanging! Really, you can make this kind of paint + embroidery turkey into any textile project that you want.

Quilt and wall hanging samples made by

Jacquelynne Steves & Daniela Durham. Towel

sample made by Jacquelynne, Anthony & Kyra.

Approximate finished sizes:

• Quilt- 44 1/2” x 48 1/2”

• Wall Hanging 14 1/2” x 19 1/2”

• Handprint Turkey Towels- varies

This pattern contains instructions to make a

quilt, an “interactive” wall hanging, and some

adorable towels with “handprint turkeys!” There

are 7 applique and 7 hand embroidery designs to

choose from!

This is a very scrappy quilt- so feel free to go

through your stash, or use this as an excuse to

pick up some fat quarters! I know that a lot of us

equate an “autumn” quilt with dark browns, reds

and oranges, but I’ve used some brighter, more

fun colors in this quilt which still “feel” like fall

but are a little unexpected. If you are up for a

little challenge, I encourage you to go out of your

“color comfort zone” for this project!

Normally, we make an appliqued or embroidered

square/rectangle, and then build the block

and/or project around it. However, this month

for the quilt and wall hanging, will piece the blocks first, and then add our applique/embroidery designs so they extend

into the pieced part of the block. I think this is a fun and interesting way to make our blocks!

So, you will notice that the Cream square by itself will actually be too small for the background. If you want to use the

designs in another project without piecing blocks first, remember that you’ll need to cut your Cream squares larger to

start (start with a 10” square, then trim to 8 1/2” after you complete the applique/embroidery.)

For the wall hanging- You will notice that the turkey on our wall hanging does not have tail feathers. That’s because we

are going to add them on Thanksgiving day! You will find a document full of feather designs that you can print out onto

paper or lightweight cardstock. Print them out and cut out on the line. Have everyone write something they are grateful

for on a feather and then use pins to tack them to your turkey. I think it’s both a fun and meaningful Thanksgiving

activity.

Finally, for the towels- I found this idea on Pinterest and thought it was adorable! Who hasn’t made handprint turkeys?

What a fun way to memorialize those little handprints (or even your own!) on a towel. You could also use this technique

on napkins, placemats, even a wall hanging! Really, you can make this kind of paint + embroidery turkey into any textile

project that you want.

PROJECT INSTRUCTIONS:

Quilt:

Make 4 Churn Dash blocks Make HSTs for the corners- Place a 3 1/8” Teal square right sides together with a 3 1/8” Pale Yellow square. Repeat with

all Teal and Pale Yellow squares.

Use a ruler and a pencil to draw a line diagonally from corner to corner, on the WRONG side of the fabric of each

“square pair”. Then draw a line 1/4” on either side of this line. I like to use a see-through ruler for this step. (You can also

just draw the line down the center, and use your 1/4” foot to sew 1/4” away from that center line… but I like the

accuracy I get by drawing in all of the lines.)

Pin the pairs together, and sew on those “side” lines (not the center line), then cut

on the center line:

Press the seam allowances toward the Teal. Now, you have 16 squares (HST’s, or Half Square

Triangle units), which look like this:

Trim HSTs to 2 1/2”. See HST tutorial here tinyurl.com/hst-easy-tutorial

Sew each 1 1/2” x 2 1/2” Pale Yellow rectangle to a Gold rectangle; press seam allowances

open.

Assemble above units with the 2 1/2” Teal squares to make blocks as

shown; press seam allowances as indicated by arrows.

Add Scrappy Inner Borders- Sew an Orange and Medium Blue (1 1/2” x 6 1/2”) strip to

opposites sides of each churn dash unit; press seam allowances toward Orange &

Medium Blue borders:

7

Sew a Medium Blue 1 1/2” square to each Plum 1 1/2” x 7 1/2” strip.

Press seam allowances toward strips.

Sew an Orange 1 1/2” square to each Medium Brown 1 1/2” x 7 1/2” strip.

Press seam allowances toward strips.

Sew the strips to the sides of the churn dash units- NOTE that the Medium

Blue squares should be adjacent to the Medium Blue strips, and the

Orange squares should be adjacent to the Orange strips.

Press seam allowances toward border strips. Blocks should measure 8 1/2”.

Add Cream Middle Block Borders- Sew 1 1/2” x 8 1/2” strips to

opposite sides of block; press seam allowances toward Cream

borders.

Sew 1 1/2” x 10 1/2” strips to remaining sides of block; press seam

allowances toward Cream borders:

Add Outer Dark Brown Block Borders- Sew 1 1/2” x 10 1/2” strips to

opposite sides of block; press seam allowances toward Dark Brown

borders.

Sew 1 1/2” x 12 1/2” strips to remaining sides of block; press seam

allowances toward Dark Brown borders:

Make 5 appliqued/embroidered blocks We will be piecing our background FIRST! Then you can add your choice of applique and/or embroidery.

Sew 2” x 6 1/2” Teal #2 and Light Brown strips to sides of 6 1/2” Cream square; press seam

allowances toward block border strips. Units should measure 9 1/2” x 6 1/2”.

8

Sew a 2” Teal #2 square to each Yellow 2” x 8” strip.

Press seam allowances toward strips.

Sew a 2” Light Brown square to each Light Orange 2” x 8” strip.

Press seam allowances toward strips. Strips should measure 2” x 9 1/2”.

Sew the strips to the sides of the blocks- NOTE that the Teal squares should

be adjacent to the Teal strips, and the Brown squares should be adjacent to

the Brown strips.

Press seam allowances toward border strips.

Press seam allowances toward border strips. You will have (5) 9 1/2” blocks.

Fuse interfacing to back of blocks if desired. I find that having interfacing on the back makes it much easier to applique

and embroider pieced blocks, because it holds the seam allowances on the back in place.

Applique and/or embroider your 5 designs of choice onto squares. NOTE that you can

rotate the blocks, so that your color placement of the scrappy inner borders is different

on each block. See quilt photo for example.

When arranging your appliques or centering your embroidery design, remember that you

will need at least 1/2” between the edge of the design and the edge of the block after

trimming.

Trim the blocks to 8 1/2” square, making sure that you have at least 1/2” on all sides between the edges of the block

and the edges of the applique/embroidery (1/4” for the seam allowance, and then another 1/4” to allow a little room

between the edge of the applique designs and the seam line.)

Add Cream Middle Block Borders- Sew 1 1/2” x 8 1/2” strips to opposite

sides of blocks; press seam allowances toward Cream borders.

Sew 1 1/2” x 10 1/2” strips to remaining sides of block; press seam

allowances toward Cream borders:

9

Add Outer Purple Block Borders- Sew 1 1/2” x 10 1/2” strips to sides

of blocks.

Press seam allowances toward Purple borders.

Sew 1 1/2” x 12 1/2” strips to remaining sides of block.

Press seam allowances toward Purple borders:

Assemble the quilt top Sew blocks into 3 rows as shown in diagram, alternating the churn dash

and appliqued/embroidered blocks. Press seam allowance open or to one

side (your preference.)

Sew block rows and 2 1/2” x 36 1/2” Cream borders together as shown;

press seam allowances toward borders.

Sew 4 1/2” x 40 1/2” Cream borders to sides of quilt; press seam allowances toward borders.

Piece the 4 1/2” x width of fabric Cream strips together to create one long strip. See tutorial tinyurl.com/pieced-strips

Cut the strip into (2) border strips which are each 44 1/2” long. Sew to top and bottom of quilt. Press seam allowances

toward borders.

Layer quilt top with batting and backing fabric. Quilt as desired. Bind with Purple binding strips.

Give Thanks Turkey Wall Hanging:

Make Turkey Block Sew Medium Blue and Medium Brown (2” x 6 1/2”) strips to sides of 6 1/2” Cream square.

Press seam allowances toward block border strips. Unit should measure 9 1/2” x 6 1/2”.

Sew the Medium Blue 2” square to the Gold 2” x 8” strip.

Press seam allowances toward strips.

Sew the Medium Brown 2” square to the Orange 2” x 8” strip.

Press seam allowances toward strips. Strips should measure 2” x 9 1/2”.

Sew the strips to the sides of the Cream square- NOTE that the Medium Blue

square should be adjacent to the Medium Blue strip, and the Medium Brown

square should be adjacent to the Medium Brown strip.

Press seam allowances toward border strips.

Press seam allowances toward border strips. Your block should measure 9 1/2”.

Fuse interfacing to back of block if desired. I find that having interfacing on the back makes it much easier to applique

and embroider pieced blocks, because it holds the seam allowances on the back in place.

Applique and/or embroider the turkey design onto square but OMIT the

feathers.

When arranging your appliques or centering your embroidery design, remember

that you will need at least 1/2” between the edge of the design and the edge of

the block after trimming.

Add Cream Middle Block Borders- Sew 1 1/2” x 8 1/2” strips to

opposite sides of blocks; press seam allowances toward Cream

borders.

Sew 1 1/2” x 10 1/2” strips to remaining sides of block.

Turkey Handprint Towel Iron waxy side of freezer paper to back of towel, in the area where you

will be doing your painting.

Place a small amount of paint on a paper plate. Use the sponge brush to apply paint to hand. Work quickly so that paint

does not dry.

Firmly press hand onto towel, using a straight up & down motion, being careful not to wiggle.

13

Allow paint to dry thoroughly.

Use a Frixion pen to add turkey details. Add names and dates as desired.

Remove the freezer paper.

Hand embroider the details. When doing my embroidery, I tried to strike a balance between ignoring any extraneous

details, while keeping the imperfect charm of my grandchildren’s handwriting. I mostly used a backstitch to go over their

lines.

Iron the towel so that any stray Frixion marks disappear.
