    PILLOW FIGHT CHAIR'S MESSAGE! *

    J ESSIA

HA M !When I go to college, Ill boulder for the first time, Ill watch the sun rise, Ill give escargot a chance, Ill try new

    things!

For us college kids, the new things we look forward to upon experiencing this college life are opportunities that

were once offered to us during our high school career. Granted, we probably didnt have time for them back then and pro-bably wanted to utilize the given time in college to finally check them off our bucket lists. So here we are, in college, finally

giving these items a chance. But if I had to choose the newest and strangest activity I have come across during my short time here, it would be

UCLA Circle K Internationals Pillow Fight.

I never really expected to come across an enormous pillow fight, let alone plan said enormous pillow fight, but I

dont think I would have traded this experience for anything else. The committee began in early spring contacting po-tential sponsors, booking entertainment groups, and developing the big picture for Pillow Fight

(its not just a floor covered in cotton). We selected Alexandria House as our beneficiary again,

simply because weve worked so well with them in the past; to them, were not just an

anonymous benefactor. Our contributions matter, and the best part is that they specifically

ask us where we want the money to go.

9 months, 412 attendees, and 1 event later, Pillow Fight 2014 has raised

    $3,457.83 for Alexandria House.

I am so proud of all of you, and I cannot thank you enough for all of yourhelp. I hope you enjoyed Pillow Fight as much as I did. If you ever want to relive

the event, check out front page feature on the Daily Bruin:

By the 30th FX comic sign I mad

paused to look around the room

    see other members painting Supe

    Batman, Flash,and countless othe

    superheroes,and I couldnt help b

get excited for all the work we were

putting in leading up to the annual Pill

    Fight.

Personally, out of my four (on-and-off) years in Circle K, Ive n

been to Pillow Fight. But being that this was my last and final ye

I really wanted to take part in the experience and make the most o

senior year. I attended a couple of work nights and loved how every

in the club came together when they could to help contribute and su

the behind-the-scene efforts for the event. From making cut-out fra

for photo ops to be used during publicity week, to painting posters

helping setup prior to kickoff, being part of work night truly chang

perspective and gratitude for Circle K, the clubs fellowship, and i

dedication to service. Shout out to Jessica Pham for planning such a

amazing Pillow Fight! And heres a little poem I wrote to express thewarm fuzzies Im having:

Twas the weeks before Pillow Fight, when all through the room,Every member was working, bringing arts to a bloom.

From tracing superheroes to cutting comic signs,Not a single member let out the smallest whine.

Because all were so happy, to show their help and support,With our forces combined, our efforts could not be thwart.

Dedicating many days and long hours spentAll to make Pillow Fight a successful event.

    When Pillow Fight drew near,

Guests entered with great cheer.Ackerman Grand Ballroom was completely adorned.

And finally to our anticipation, a loud boom played unwarned.Everyone ran crazily about, and a pillow fight sprang on out.

Our efforts finally reaching an end, with a goal to help other transitionWe do it for Alexandria House, funds raised to help uphold their ambition.

What do you getwhen you put 15 peoplein an apartment withbaking supplies? A fun-filled, smoke-detectorblaring, cupcake-decora-ting bake night!

As all 15 of us ga-thered inside Thien'sapartment, we soon real-ized our lack of spaceand lack of baking uten-sils. But after we uti-lized the space the bestwe could by using thekitchen, living room, and Thien's bedroom, andI ran downstairs to myapartment to grab my ba-king supplies, we start-ed to get to work.

Since we had a va-riety of baked goods tomake, I split everyoneup into different groupsto work on the specificitem. Some people weresuper pro at baking al-ready, like Ranee, thebaking queen, and Jackie, the rice krispies treatexpert. Others had alittle more difficulty

with the projects, likeAlvin who put too manysticks of butter into

the cookie batter thaninstructed. Luckily, thcookies still came outamazing and the extrabutter just made themextra delicious! We hada few moments of panicwhen the smoke detectorwent off 3 times, and wall rushed towards themwith pillows and anythiwe could find to fan outhe smoke.

In the end, all othe baked goods turnedout perfect! Our mostprized creation was probably the minion cup-cakes, which came outadorably thanks to theamazing artists who dec

    rated them.

It was a slightlystressful night on mypart because I was chaiing the event, so I hadto get all the suppliesand organize everythingBut at the end of it alit was still a great experience. I was able tohang out with friendswhile doing something I

love, and it was very rwarding to see the finished product.

come out and join us, for some Pillow Fight fun! Being in the Pillow Fight Music Video was d

ly a lot of fun! Not only did I learn about the magic of auto tune, but I also learned how

fail at looking sexy (licking your tongue doesnt always work.) All jokes aside, the Pillow

Music Video was a promotional video to get people to come to Pillow Fight 2014. By changin

lyrics of One Directions Live While Were Young, the Pillow Fight committee was cleverly ab

    promote Pillow Fight.

Being in a music video was a whole new experience. At first I thought the music video would be ghetto-fabulous ju

cause of what I was always used to. However, the music video was professionally done with all sorts of technology, ha

onies, professional video quality, and even fancy attire. Watching Gautam work his magic with the audio was definitely fa

ting and it inspired me to learn on my own. Although everyone sounded really good, we sounded even better thanks to au

ne :D. (Hallelujah) The music video took several days to plan, and although it was difficult to get people together beca

e conflicting schedules, everything worked out. Everyone wore One Directiony clothes and had a blast. Jessica (mentor

oot) handled everything super fabulously, and everything was donev in time. Through the music video I was able to make

    ds (Facebook official :O).

I would definitely recommend having another music video to promote Circle K and recommend everyone to participate

t Live While Were Young? (see what I did there lol)

    [Jason-yang)

[general-member)[pillow-fight-fun(music-video) As a first-year Circle Ker, I had the privilege of helping Pillow Fight committee

prepare for what has been the best pillow fight fundraiser I have ever attended (alright, it was

the only one I have attended but it was great nonetheless!) Along with attending last minute winter break committee

meetings, dancing my heart out to our annual Pillow Fight flash mob, and hours and hours of preparing pillow fight

decorations (and accidently pulling Jasons), I also had the opportunity to work with several others on a Pillow

Fight music video. In an effort to promote Pillow Fight, our committee took on the task of creating a parody

music video to showcase all the fun you could be having at pillow fight.

I guess it all started when Jessica volunteered several of us to sing. We got started at the first Pillow

Fight work night where several of us came together to put the finishing touches on the lyrics, music, and overall

plan. The next day, we started recording our singing. It was a very tedious procedure as we had to individually

record our voices and everyone had to be extremely silent. But, after seven hours of being in Josefs room in

Courtside, we had all of our vocal recordings completed. This was then followed by another half day recording all

of our scenes. But, after Gautam performed some witchcraft, we were done! A parody of One Directions Live While

Were Young, our finished product Pillow Fight Fun had onesies, strip teases (Im a minor), awkward elevator scenes,

a pillow fight in front of Royce Hall, making money rain, and if I remember correctly, a K-Pop

star! It was a very fun project to do and all of you should be a part of any music video

    Circle K does!

Pillow FIght Flash Mob!In spirit of pillow fight 2014, Sinh and Alex came up with the idea of a flash mob that took place on January 9th in Bruin Plaza t

marily draw public attention to the largest event ever!! Prior to the show, more than a hundred members gathered in the Parking Lo

arn the dance moves wonderfully choreographed by our enthusiastic Alex Pham and Catherine Ho. To be honest, it was not the best lo

r practice because it was dimly lit and sometimes noisy when other groups also had their practices. I never minded that, and I believed

    the others did either.

This year, The other side by Jason Derulo was chosen as the background music for the flash mob (which happens to be one of

vorite songs, aw yea!). The upbeat rhythm and the awesome arrangement of dance movements already pumped up the excitement fr

e beginning of the practice. I personally loved the choreography, though admittedly it was difficult to be executed to perfection within

practice. Everybody at first felt intimidated for we had little dance background, as the practice sessions continued, we picked up the es

lls from the Phams and got better. After the demonstration of each part, we began to memorize the steps in different ways. Some ofpt practicing the moves with others until they became comfortable, while some preferred to watch the video time after time to have

aphic memory of each moves execution. Although we learnt the choreography at different paces and perfected our dance skills in v

eans, we strived to bring out the best in the final show. That was why, in my opinion, the practices always ended on high notes, for we

ch individual had given it all. We made silly mistakes (I remembered accidentally slapping the person next to me and kicking the one b

ring the practice. My apologies!), fooled around, or even laughed at trivial matters, but we, as a family (yes!), nailed the practices afte

at least from my point of view. At the end of the day, what remains as the most unforgetta

memory would be a bunch of highly energetic people showing the world what pillow fight a

by extension, circle K, is all about. In short, unity in serving others and most importantly, wa

    having fun!!!! :)

    Pillow Fight Flash MOb!

WHAT HAPPENED ON THURSDAY, JANUARY 9 AT AROUND 12:50 PM - 1 PM?! Jong Choi said that Selen

COOL BEANS AND CLOSE ENOUGH, I think it was a FLASH MOB to help publicize UCLA CKI'S PILLOW FIGHT 2014

    Alexandria House!!!!

Flash Mob is exactly what it sounds like: FLASHING... .. your dance moves with a group of peop

Bruin Plaza, UCLA CKI members and friends gathered to groove to Jason Derulo's "The Other Side!" But al

didn't just happen over night; mad props to Sinh Nguyen and Alex Pham for all their toleration, patienc

hard work for everyone participating in the dance! The two worked to organize the event through winter

break and Week 1 of winter quarter! Members went to three practices during Week 1 despite the ruckus f

cars and the short amount of time we had, we all came together to dance our hearts out for Pillow Fig

2014. Shout out to Ricky Lam and Gautum Gupta for documenting the event on camera! Everything was s

fabulous that even the Daily Bruin featured us on the front page!

I am definitely not a dancer, but Alex's choreography made me feel $wagalicious. I practiced

with some friends throughout the week to make sure we had the moves down. When names were being call

for where we would be positioned in the mob, I was super happy and scared when I was placed near the

I know that the purpose of the flash mob is to raise awareness for Pillow Fight, but I was afraid tha

would end up accidentally doing something that would give Circle K a bad name (but that did not happen

so yay)! But wowzahs, Circle K really does know how to make its members feel special and recognized!

Secret that's not so secret: My good friend Albert Truong and I have been looking forward t

event since we were Key Clubbers! I cannot tell you how many times we have watched the Pillow Fight 20

Flash Mob video on YouTube. We really admired how it looked like everyone was having a GOOD TIME, and

that we had our chance to participate we were more than pumped up. I hope that Flash Mob continues t

an annual tradition for UCLA CKI because not only does it help promote an important and wonderful fu

through a fun and innovative way, but it helps bring together members through the art of dance and sw

whether it be awkward flailing or having spot on moves.

Volunteering at an event such as Pillow Fight is one of those times where service is undercover by

fun and games. At Pillow Fight 2014, I was the chair for the Face Painting booth and I can not be any happier

because I got to do service and watch people smack each other with pillows on the side. It's like having a steak

with a side of macaroni salad! It's just really great. It's a good time. At the booth, I had amazing volunteers

who were amazingly artistic: Ranee Lee, Catrina Pang, Lisa Chong, and Cynthia Pan! You girls were amazing andI hope you all had fun regardless of painting other people's faces! :)

Kids between the ages of eight and twenty two lined up for the face painting booth and requested

paintings from intricate swirls to Despicable Me Minions to the Batman symbol. Honestly, I did not think that

many attendees would be very interested in getting their face painted, but it was quiet a success! If any of

readers out there attended Pillow Fight, you may have even seen the four Flashes with the Flash mask painted

on their face! Thanks to our team of facial paint specialists, those Flashes finally came to life with the final

touch of adding a face painted mask. Your welcome, DC Comics enthusiasts. I hope ya'll enjoyed Pillow Fight 2014!!

If you didn't go, there's always next year :3

Over there! Is that a bird? Or a plane? It's actually... Pillow Fight attendees keeping their iden-

tities secret! Who is that superhero behind the mask? Only the ones who painted it know! I had the

pleasure of being able to volunteer at pillow fight, getting artsy at the facepainting table. It was

actually the first time I have ever facepainted, and I was worried because I was thinking "what if I can't

do it, what if it turns out bad". But at the same time I really wanted to try it! In the end I'm just

really glad it turned out well and pillow fighters liked their masks and flowery designs. I feel a bitbad that being a first-timer, it took quite some time to finish designs and that not everyone that

    wanted to get facepainted could.

My favorite requests were for Batman masks by the kids at Pillow Fight - it was cute how they en-

joyed the superhero theme of the event, and of course it always feels good to do something for kids.

The only downside was that I was so focused on facepainting, I forgot to take a break and check out

the rest of Pillow Fight! I'll definitely be working at Pillow Fight next year, and maybe next time

around I'll remember to take a break and experience more of it!

David Han, Technologhy Chair At Pillow Fight, there were tons of activities such as games, hanging out with

friends, and doing service. One of service activities was answer trivial questions about super-

heroes and in return, donates a penny to Alexandria House. The way this works is all

thanks to the iGive search engine. For every search that a person makes, a penny will bedonated to Alexandria House. People were asked questions about superhero theme questions

such as Name all the colors of the kryptonite. People had a minute to answer the question

and the iGive search engine was there to help them. If the person was able to answer the

question within one minute, they were given a raffle ticket and not to mention, donates

a penny to Alexandria House for using the iGive search engine. The iGive also has another

feature where every time you shop online, they will donate a certain percentage to our club.

If you are interested in helping us out and Alexandria House, be sure to sign up at

www.igive.com and look for UCLA Circle K.

Thien Tran, General Member Volunteering at Pillow Fight was a wonderful experience for me! I loved being able to

wear pajamas out in public and dressing up as my second favorite superhero. the Flash!

Even though I was a game proctor for the majority of the games, I was still able to enjoy

the event by watching other people have fun! The first part of volunteering at Pillow Fight

was putting up all the decorations and setting up the booths for our guests. Afterwards,we had a little time to mingle and rest before the guests started to arrive. The entertain-

ment at the event consists of Awe Chords acapella, Icarus, Wushu, ACA Lion dancing, and

Sonya Rao! For games, we played games such as Superhero Calls, Catch the Flash, and Super-

    hero Mafia!

I believed Jessica Pham hosted a great Pillow Fight this year. For me, Pillow Fight was a

great way to meet new people and hang out with friends while doing service at the same

  • 8/13/2019 TurKey Tabloid - Vol VI. Issue 4 (Pillow Fight 2014)

    15/18

This year, I had the amazing opportunity of being able to participate in Pillow

Fight, helping towards a great cause with Alexandria House while also having fun

hitting other people with pillows. My favorite part was being able to catch up with

many different CKI'ers from different schools that I don't get to see that often, and

getting smacked around by various pillows during the pillow fights since I forgot to

    bring a pillow...

I really also enjoyed visiting the different booths; from learning new factsthrough using the iGive search engine to helping draw a few characters at the face

painting booth (although my pictures didn't exactly turn out too well :() In additio

the performances were also another highlight of my experience at Pillow Fight. From

seeing intense fighting scenes by Wushu to listening to the amazing voices of Awe-

Chords and Sonia Rao, there was a nonstop variety of entertainment that kept every

one in awe. I really enjoyed my time participating in Pillow Fight, and I'm definitely

excited to see what's in store for next year's

Pillow Fight! 10/10 would come back again.
