TMIDPS QUALITATIVE RESEARCH

To gain a deeper understanding of people’s life conditions before, during and after the migration process

To gain a better understanding of the effects of migration on different population groups (age, sex, returned/not returned)

To reveal the different expectations and attitudes regarding the future

To help in developing the methodology of the QUANTITATIVE survey.

Qualitative Research- In-depth Interviews

Guideline for In-depth Interview with Institutions: The public institutions and NGOs which are providing services to internally displaced people

Guideline for In-depth Interview with Persons1. Returned IDPs

2. Non-returned IDPs

QUANTITATIVE SURVEY

TMIDPS is designed to make inferences on migration and internally displaced people in Turkey.

TMIDPS SAMPLE DESIGN

Since the survey especially focuses on IDPs, it is appropriate to divide the survey population into three main domains:

1. “Migrant sending provinces” domain composed of 14 provinces of Return to Village and Rehabilitation Project (RVRP) which experienced dense internal displacement,

2. “Migrant receiving provinces” domain composed of 10 provinces which received highest immigration from 14 provinces and fall outside the RVRP region.

3. “Other provinces” composed of remaing 57 provinces of Turkey

Page 7: Turkey Migration and Internally Displaced Population Survey (TMIDPS)

7

TMIDPS SAMPLE DESIGN The “migrant sending provinces” domain consists of 14

RVRP provinces in the East and Southeast Anatolia (Adıyaman, Ağrı, Batman, Bingöl, Bitlis, Diyarbakır, Elazığ, Hakkari, Mardin, Muş, Siirt, Şırnak, Tunceli ve Van).

These provinces were firstly divided into Urban-rural strata where 10.000 population size is the cut off point as in Demographic and Health Surveys.

Moreover, a sperate stratum called, returned villages was created for the villages and other settlements in rural areas which receive return migration.

Since these provinces are also destination provinces, they receive migration too.

Page 8: Turkey Migration and Internally Displaced Population Survey (TMIDPS)

8

TMIDPS SAMPLE DESIGN The “migrant receiving provinces” domain was constructed by using the

information concerning “residence 5 years before the census day”, “place of birth” and “place of residence on census day”. The most 10 provinces which receives dense migration from 14 RVRP provinces forms this domain.

These provinces are İstanbul, Ankara, İzmir, Adana, Mersin, Bursa, Antalya, Malatya, Manisa and Kocaeli.

After selection of 10 provinces, The densely migrated quarters of sub-settlements of these 10 provinces which receive migration from the RVRP provinces formed the “dense migration stratum”.

The remaining urban and rural settlements of 10 provinces also formed other urban and rural strata of this domain.

Page 9: Turkey Migration and Internally Displaced Population Survey (TMIDPS)

9

TMIDPS SAMPLE DESIGN

The 57 provinces of Turkey after excluding the 14 RVRP provinces and 10 dense migrant receiving provinces consisted the “other provinces” domain.

Within these 57 provinces, 8 provinces were selected probablisticly. These provinces are Tekirdağ, Muğla, Burdur, Bolu, Çankırı, Aksaray, Kars and Giresun.

This domain were also divided into urban and rural strata..

TMIDPS SAMPLE DESIGN

The sample design of TMIDPS is weigthed, stratified, multistage, cluster sample. The targeted number of households were divided to fixed cluster sizes and these clusters were selected for each stratum.

TMIDPS QUESTIONNAIRES

Two different questionnaires were used in : Household questionnaire Individiual questionnaire

Household questionnaire has a cover page to determine the households and has a household schedule to list the all the members and visitors.

The interviewer collects basic information as sex, age, education and migration status for all persons. These kind of information will be used to estimate some demographic indicators, to calculate some socio-economic variables and to assess the quality of the sampling.

Page 16: Turkey Migration and Internally Displaced Population Survey (TMIDPS)

16

TMIDPS QUESTIONNAIRES

The household questionnaire were completed only one respondent and household list were formed. The individual were determined after these lists were finalized and elegible persons were defined. The individual interviews were started after the completion of the household questionnaire (selected male and females aged between 18-69).

If there are more than one eligible male and female persons, interviews were performed one of each sex and the selection of the person(s) was done probablisticly with “Kish” method.

Page 17: Turkey Migration and Internally Displaced Population Survey (TMIDPS)

17

Individiual questionnaire Individiual questionnaire was designed to collect information below topics:

Basic Characteristics: to collect information on characteristics as age, education, place of residence, marital status, working status, which may affect the migration status

Migration History: to collect information on all place of residence changes of the persons since birth. All questions were asked to all persons up to end of this module.

Returned Migrant: Information on satisfaction of expectations of returned migrants for Security Reasons in the Last 20 Years.

Potential for Future Migration: This section were asked to every individual about their future migration plans.

DATA ENTRY

Data entry activity has started on 3rd of October 2005.

Data entry continued with Double-shift after 1st of November 2005.

Data entry was done with PC-Edit software as a double entry (every questionnaire was entered twice with different clerks).

Page 32: Turkey Migration and Internally Displaced Population Survey (TMIDPS)

32

Data Processing and Analysis

Data editing activities were performed during and after data entry for the quality of the data.

Since the sample design of the survey is a weighted design, Sample Weights were calculated.

The data sets of the survey was constructed. The analysis stage is ongoing.
