Redevelopment site

One of the objectives of the Turcot re-construction project is to unleash the development potential of the space currently occupied by the Turcot Yards. Coupled with the impending MUHC super-hospital proposal, and within the context of a highway and rail reconstruction involving about 122 hectares of land, this site is part of one of the larg-est urban regeneration projects in Montreal’s history.

The site presents urban designers with enormous opportunity to be creative and dynamic and grave responsibility to design something that will work. Open land without existing architecture to inform design decisions is alluring. This space, however, is far from a blank slate. It faces an inevitable relationship with massive transportation infrastructure, and isolation from, and unique relationships with, its surrounding communities. This document seeks to provide a foundation for understanding the proposed re-construction and the communi-ties surrounding it. It will lend depth to the identifi cation of the area’s true opportunities and constraints, a starting point for good design.

MUHC

McGill University Health Center

It is important to appreciate that the proposed MUHC super hospital is intimately con-nected to the area. This megaproject stands to alter the character of traffi c circulation, and the orientation of local developers with respect to their target markets. Its weight as a polar infl uence in the area should, perhaps, temper design decisions in the vicinity.
