RegenerativeTurbine Pumps
MTH M50 • L50 SeriesVertical base mount and horizon-tal pedestal mounted multi-stageregenerative turbine pumpsrepresent the most economicalhigh performance alternative forlow flow (2 to 38 GPM) applica-tions involving moderate to highpressures (heads to 2300 feet).By combining the latest conceptsin hydraulic turbine pump designwith precision computer controlledmanufacturing, M50 • L50 Seriespumps deliver high efficiencyoperation even at low NPSH.Costs are controlled by efficientmanufacturing processes, use ofstandard motors, and highlyoptimized pump designs. Mainte-nance costs are kept to a mini-mum by combining an easilyserviceable design with the use ofhigh quality components toprovide long life.
Water Passage DesignMTH masters one of the mostcritical design considerations ofregenerative turbine pumps - theshaping of water passageways toachieve maximum capacity andpressure while minimizinghorsepower requirements. Byoptimizing water passagewaycross-sectional profiles for eachimpeller, MTH improves bothefficiency and pressure in the M50• L50 Series, and exceeds the
standards realized by previoustechniques.Impeller ProfileOne of the most notable improve-ments in regenerative turbinepump technology, incorporated inM50 • L50 Series pumps, involvesthe ability to determine theoptimum impeller width and bladelength. These factors have asignificant effect on the requiredhorsepower versus pressurecurve for regenerative turbinepumps. By optimizing these foreach pump, peak efficiency isimproved and “off peak” horse-power requirements are reducedas well.
Impeller BladesAfter the most favorable impellerprofile has been determined for aparticular water passagewaycross-section, MTH calculates thenumber of blades needed tomaximize the performance of thatpump. The blade design in M50 •L50 Series pumps increases bothefficiency and design pressurewithout incurring the manufactur-ing difficulties associated withproducing contoured bladeimpellers. State-of-the-artcomputer controlled machinessimplify manufacturing of thevarious MTH impellers utilized inthe M50 • L50 Series. The result
is a high performance pumpproviding efficiency characteristicsexceeding those of much moreexpensive units.NPSH RequirementsM50 • L50 Series regenerativeturbine pumps meet low netpositive suction head (NPSH)requirements without efficiencyloss. This is achieved by keepingthe inlet fluid velocity low and thengently accelerating to passagewayvelocities. Special ramps areresponsible for this gentle fluidentry into the impeller blades andaccount for the high inlet effi-ciency of the M50 • L50 Seriespumps.
Low NPSH RequirementsL50 Series regenerative turbinepumps have exceptionally lowNPSH requirements, making themideally suited for applicationswhere very little inlet head isavailable. This reduced NPSHR provided bythe L50 Series is obtained byusing a first stage centrifugal styleimpeller with inlet flow pathsshaped to maintain a constantfluid velocity. This reduces entrylosses to the impeller as well asmaintaining efficiency. A multi-vane diffuser is used in conjunc-tion with the centrifugal impellerfor balancing radial loads andextracting the maximum pressurefrom the first stage. Pressure andflow produced by the NPSHinducer assures that the succeed-ing stages are adequately fed.

L Series Flex Coupled
This first stage impeller is used inconjuction with a muti-vanediffuser to provide the secondstage regenerative turbine withadequate suction head.
L50 Series pumps can effectivelyhandle NPSH availability as lowas two feet, depending on themodel and capacity.
Steep Head/Capacity Curve.Pumping capacity varies onlyslightly as pressure changes.Steep pressure characteristicovercomes temporary lineresistances.
Self-Adjusting Impeller. M50 •L50 impellers utilize balanc-ing holes to promotehydraulic self centering, which eliminates the needfor external adjustment. The free sliding impellerexerts no thrust load on thebearings, thereby extend-ing service life. Self-centering is equally effectivewhether mounted in the horizontalor vertical position.
Mechanical Seals. Bronze fittedpumps have Buna N elastomers, carbon washer, ceramic seat, andstainless steel metal parts.Optional seats and materials areavailable.
1000 PSI Case Working Pressure.Rigid stucture is designed formaximum casing strength.
100% Tested. Every pump is fullytested to verify performance priorto shipment.
Volatile Fluid Handling. Theturbine impeller handles vapors upto 20% by volume, minimizing thepossibility of vapor lock.
“O”Ring Gaskets. “O”ring gasketsare used throughout the M50 •L50 Series pumps to assurepositive sealing.
Shaft. Standard shaft is of highstrength 416 stainless steel.
Motors. Standard 56C facemotors are utilized up to 3 Hp. 5Hp and above are TEFC onvertical base mount units.
Best Efficiency. New pump designsoptimize efficiency for each size.
Non-Cavitating. M50 • L50 Seriespumps may be operated underadverse inlet conditions withoutaudible or measurable cavitation.
Low NPSH. New inlet designsalong with L50 Series inducer stylepumps provide superior fluidhandling ability with low inlet headconditions.
Design FeaturesM50 • L50 SERIES
L50 Series Inducer forLow NPSH
L50 Series inducer style pumpsare designed specifically forapplications where the netpositive suction head availableat the pump inlet is limited, suchas in boiler feed water deaeratorservice.A centrifugal style impeller withgood low NPSH characteristicsis utilized to lower the inlet headrequirements.
Balanced Loads. By staggering eachstage’s discharge by 180°, the radialloads on the bearings are effectivelybalanced, and shaft deflection isthereby negligible.
Interstage Bushings. Close toleranceself-lubricating carbon bearings be-tween each stage limit interstage leak-
age.
Construction Materials. Bronzefitted, all iron, all bronze and cast316 stainless steel are available asstock materials.
Bearing Pedestals. All models canbe pedestal mounted for flexiblecoupled drive.
“O”Ring Gaskets. Buna, EPR,Viton, Neoprene, and Teflon areavailable.
Mechanical Seals. Buna, EPR,Viton, Neoprene, and Teflonelastomers, tungsten, silicon
carbide or ni-resist seats.
Flush Line. An external flush linefrom pump discharge to seal face(when used with the optional siliconcarbide seat), allows operation inwater up to 250°F.
Water Seal Connection. A tappedopening can be provided for sealflushing from an external source.
Inlet Strainer. A 90° suction strainerwith a replaceable stainless steelscreen is available for installation inthe suction line to aid in preventingforeign material from entering thepump. A cap at the bottom of thestrainer can be easily and quicklyremoved for screen cleaning orreplacement.
