2013 has seen many events and highlights for Whitireia as our second edition of Tūrama attests. We continue to provide quality tertiary education opportunities and options for students; working closely with industry to ensure that all our programmes provide a pathway into a relevant career within it.

nurse educators conference opens doors for collaboratIon opportunItIes

Around 300 clinical and tertiary nurse educators from Australia, Asia, United Kingdom and America attended the three day conference titled ‘Purposeful Partnerships for Practice.’

A number of Whitireia health faculty staff were instrumental in bringing this conference to Wellington. Leanne Pool, Academic Leader, Bachelor of Nursing, was one of the conference convenors along with Kerri Arcus, Academic Leader, Postgraduate Studies, and Dr Kathy Holloway, Faculty of Health Dean, who were on the conference committee.

This conference is run every two years in New Zealand. This is the second time that Whitireia have been a key host for ANEC, the last time being in 2007. We enjoy being part of the team that pulls

The new Whitireia health training facility at the Porirua campus was showcased to two visiting Professors of Nursing from the United States that attended ANEC, as keynote speakers. It was wonderful to showcase our facility to them said Dr Holloway. “Our visitors were very impressed with the teaching and learning facilities we have for our students and in particular our simulation learning environment, reaffirming that it is world class.” This visit has provided the polytechnic with another wonderful opportunity, an invitation to become part of the Californian Simulation Alliance with the view of providing Whitireia as an international site for Masters in Simulation training.

Whitireia were well represented at ANEC with 25 health faculty staff attending; with many of these in an official capacity either as MC, a keynote speaker or as presenters. Shayola Koperu, Programme Manager, Bachelor of Nursing Māori was awarded a first time presenters award for her presentation ‘Nursing Education in Ethnically Diverse Societies.’

Crew 25, recent graduates of the Certificate in Introduction to Film and Television Production, at the Film and Television School, have had their end of year film BIRDSONG accepted into the prestigious Indie Fest USA, International Film Festival in California. The Film Festival took place at Garden Grove, California from 24-27 October this year. Ben Childs, a graduate of the school and Director of this film attended and

represented the crew who pulled this film together.

BIRDSONG has also been selected for the Sandfly International Film Festival in Australia. This Film Festival showcases and promotes Australian and international short-films and music videos; it takes place in November.

This is a first for a graduate film from the Film School – a wonderful achievement.

Invited guests had the opportunity of providing input into the direction of tertiary education training for the Kāpiti region. This stakeholder event was held under the new partnership arrangement between Whitireia and WelTec; a partnership known as The Choice Protocol. The Choice Protocol is our two institutions working together to give students education choices that matter, one that also provides a region wide approach to tertiary education.

The event was highly successful with a lot of excellent feedback received. This will be used by the two polytechnics to develop tertiary training programmes that will support the economic developments in the Kāpiti region.

This was the first in a series of engagements to obtain feedback said Hon Roger Sowry, Council Chair. “We are very pleased with how this event has gone and what we heard from local Kāpiti business people. From the feedback we have received, we will now collectively identify some future directions for tertiary education training for the Kāpiti region.”

The programmes, the National Certificate in Infrastructure Works will be offered by Whitireia while the National Certificate in Health, Disability and Aged Support and the Certificate in Community Support will be offered by WelTec.

Works programme in Kāpiti was in response to an expected boom in the civil construction industry in the Kāpiti region said Don Campbell, Chief Executive, Whitireia. “With civil construction projects confirmed for the Kāpiti region for the next 5-10 years it made sense for us to offer this programme here and provide training opportunities in an industry that is growing and one that will need trained workers.”

Fourteen students were involved in the week’s activities which saw them participating in a field trip to Meridian’s Makara wind farm, a visit to the Transfield Power Station at the bottom of Haywards Hill, undertaking a range of activities including pole top rescues with Electra, conduct cable jointing training with PBA and DT Jointing, extension lead making, attending a range of tutorial sessions and the opportunity to meet and talk to industry representatives including Downer who spoke to students about being a Telecommunications Technician.

Whitireia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Child, Youth and Family relating to the provision of services and collaboration around the development of Pacific Social Work Models of Practice(s) that will provide best social work practices for Child, Youth and Family staff when working with Pacific families.

This MoU will provide a foundation for the future, and one that will benefit Pacific children and their families. The partnership has been formed with Whitireia on the back of Child, Youth and Family Services looking ‘from a Pacific perspective,’ what they

This is an important industry relationship for Whitireia said Don Campbell. “It’s great that Whitireia and the IITO can work together and provide these opportunities for students.” Not only do these opportunities provide students with insight into the industry, they can open doors for employment within it.”

Whitireia and the IITO have confirmed that they will work together again next year offering another taster course to students in the Wellington region.

This MoU is significant for Child, Youth and Family said Paul Nixon, Chief Social Worker. “The journey we take to help the Pacific community will be more beneficial working with Whitireia. We will be building a framework which will build a core for Pacific practice.”

Dr Kathy Holloway endorses the importance of this partnership. “We share a common interest with Child, Youth and Family around the prevention of abuse and neglect, protection of children and young people, and ensuring young people’s pathways to adulthood are free from offending behaviours. We look forward to working together to develop and consult on ethnic specific practice models and in turn developing a Pacific Social Work Practice Approach which will be used by Child, Youth and Family when working with Pacific families.”

The signing of the MoU is the first step in a partnership that will make a significant difference to the Pacific society in New Zealand.

jewellery graduate represents new Zealand Whitireia contemporary jewellery graduate Moniek Schrijer represented New Zealand at an international contemporary jewellery graduation exhibition in the Netherlands.

The annual Marzee Selection of Graduate Work Jewellery Exhibition showcased graduate works from international academies and colleges. 22 countries were represented at this year’s exhibition with Moniek Schrijer the only New Zealander.

whItIreIa student represents new Zealand at the world dj champIonshIps In london Whitireia Foundation Music student (and recent graduate from the Whitireia DJ programme), Kupa Winiata, represented New Zealand at the World DJ championships in London recently.

Competing at this event is the highest possible accolade for any DJ. A fantastic effort, Kupa managed to secure sixth place.

student success carpentry students wIn randall shaw memorIal award Mitch Jago and Rayden Moore Feuu had their carpentry study at Whitireia recognised at a ceremony recently when they were awarded the Randall Shaw Memorial Award. This award is given annually by the Rotary Club of Plimmerton, in association with Brights Mitre 10, Paramata.

This is the third year that this award has been presented to students studying carpentry at Whitireia. Its purpose is to encourage apprentices to the building industry and to assist with their success within it. The recipients each received a grant of $1000 to purchase trade tools from Brights Mitre 10.

We are pleased to be awarding the Randall Shaw Memorial Award for another year said Ron Lucas, President Rotary Club, Plimmerton. “Each year we present this award to pre-apprentice students that are likely to succeed in their building career.”

Both students are enjoying their building careers which have got off to a good start. Mitch and Rayden are now undertaking apprenticeships through the Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation (BCITO) while they undertake employment with local building firms New Life Homes of Titahi Bay and D S O’Leary, also of Titahi Bay.

camIlla besley, our performance starCamilla Besley, a Bachelor of Applied Arts student majoring in musical theatre, is off to Japan to peform in Phantom of the Opera. Camilla is one of five Wellington performers selected to be part of this touring show. It will be her first paid professional role where she will star as Jammes.

Camilla puts her success down to the training she has received at our Performance Centre. “Whitireia allows you to find yourself as a performer, works on your strengths and weaknesses and supports you 100% in all areas of performance.”

Camilla finishes her study with us this year and will graduate in March 2014. She is definitely one to to watch on the stage.

A wave of change is sweeping through the publishing industry and Escalator Press gives us an exciting opportunity to be part of the future of publishing,’ said Creative Writing Programme Leader, Mary-Jane Duffy.

The launch of the imprint also marked 20 years of the Whitireia Creative Writing Programme. During the last 20 years the programme has become a

major contributor to the New Zealand writing landscape, with more than 60 publications from graduates as diverse as Alison Wong, Tusiata Avia and Mandy Hager.

The press will publish work by new and established writers associated with Whitireia.

November will see Whitireia as the Small Business category sponsor of the Kapiti/Horowhenua Electra Business Awards as well as the Professional Services category sponsor of the Westpac Porirua Business Excellence Awards. We continue to be involved in the local business awards in the areas in which our campuses are established - we see these as an important opportunity to celebrate success with local businesses and industry.

Finally, we must congratulate our board member, Suzanne Snively ONZM for being a finalist in the 2013 The Welly’s Awards.

A finalist in the Community Service category, Suzanne is a committed Wellingtonian whose community service has included chairing Mary Potter Hospice’s widening provision of palliative care.

Her ONZM was awarded for her work on breaking the cycle of family violence and preventing type 2 diabetes in New Zealand.

Suzanne has been on the board at Whitireia for the last ten years. She is a former partner at Pricewaterhouse Coopers in Wellington.

publIshIng programme turns 20Whitireia publishing will celebrate its 20th birthday at the end of October. This event will be a celebration of books, the people who make them, 20 years of publishing and the launch of a co-publication with Gecko Press.

hIp hop on the world stageWhitireia Hip Hop teacher Libby Calder is the creator and leader of Infinite Dance Crew, which has just won the World Hip Hop Championship in Belgrade, Serbia. Two Whitireia second-year commerical dance students and one graduate were part of the crew.
