Page 2: Tundra Georgia

The tundra is cold just about all year. During the summer it’s warmer and the sun shines 24 hours a day. The tundra has been called ‘the land of the midnight sun’. A short summer lasts 6-10 weeks. In the tundra it never gets warmer than 45-50 degrees F. The warmer weather causes permafrost which is ice that never goes in away into the ground to melt, creating bogs and shallow lakes that never drain. The wind blows constantly, whipping around the small plants. During the winter months the sun barely rises and its dark for most of the day.

The winter temperatures don’t reach above 6.6 degrees. Endless hour darkness settles in and the winds blow even harder and stronger. The snow that falls is blown off the mountains and collects in the gorge. Animals bear down, able only able to find enough food and shelter to keep warm.

Ermines make their dens in the roots of the trees in the south. The ermine is small and weighs around 85.4 grams. The head and body length can grow from 7-13 inches and the tail can grow up to 5 inches. In the spring and summer ermines coat is chocolate brown with a white belly and a black tip on the tail. The Harlequin Duck gets its name from the look of the male Harlequin because it looks like the colourful costumes worn by ‘harlequins’, who were people dressed as clowns. The male duck is dark blue, highlighted in black, outlined white striping and spots of white. It’s wing tips are brownish black and its wings are chestnut red. The female duck is not as colourful as the male duck. It’s not as brown and its marked by 3 pale patches on its face. The harlequin ducks have a buoyant, firm body with strong webbed feet, which give the ducks power to swim through tough waters. They are expert swimmers. When they fly their wings beat rapidly. The harlequin duck weighs about 1-1.5 pounds and is about 1-1.5 feet long. Its wing span is 2-2.3 feet in width.
