Tulsa 2015 Annual Awards Ceremony and Celebrating The Craft

On Saturday, May 16th, The Tulsa Valley celebrated some milestone memberships. Our Annual 10-25-50 Year Membership Awards were

presented by Illustrious Joe R. Manning, Jr., SGIG in Oklahoma, with approximately 70 Masons and Families in attendance.

The Valley served light finger-foods provided by Brother Michael Maxey via Lambrusco’s To-Go. We sincerely thank him for his generosity and support of our Valley’s events.

This evening also held the 4th Annual Celebrating the Craft Web Event from the House of the Temple. All Brethren worldwide had the opportunity to log into the Supreme Council’s website and enjoy the festivities.

“The Scottish Rites Got Talent” program was a hit again this year with Scottish Rite Masons performing as entertainment. This program, which was open to all Scottish Rite Masons, featured Brothers who sang, played music, and performed magic.

The Membership of the Valley of Tulsa made an overall contribution of more than $52,000.00 to the Temple Restoration Fund, half of which will be returned to the Valley for the operation of our RiteCare Clinic! That means we will receive more than $26,000.00 to operate our Clinic! On behalf of the Supreme Council, and the Tulsa RiteCare Clinic, thank you for your support of this event, and our cause.

Illustrious Joe R. Manning Jr. elected as Grand Prior The Supreme Council for the Southern Jurisdiction of the United States of America,

Mother Supreme Council of the World, met at the 2015 Biennial Sessions in

Washington, D.C. It is at these Sessions where new Sovereign Grand Inspectors

General are appointed, and like most Masonic Organizations, there is an Officer Line

with titles and duties. The Supreme Council elected Illustrious Manning to the office

of Grand Prior. The Statutes of the Supreme Council, Article VI, state “The Grand

Prior shall preside in the absence of the Sovereign Grand Commander and the Lieuten-

ant Grand Commander. He is, in the Supreme Council…, what the Junior Warden is…,

and the Craft are under his superintendence while the members are at refreshment…”

Please join us in congratulating Illustrious Manning in his new Office!

Tulsa Valley Membership Co-Chairmen The Tulsa Scottish Rite Advisory Conference is proud to announce the appointment of Brothers Ron Chambers, 33°, and Ron Taylor, 32°,

KCCH, two very distinguished Masons, as our Valley Mem-

bership Co-Chairmen. Brother Chambers served as Grand Master of Masons in 2014, and Brother Taylor currently serves as District Deputy Grand Master for District 12. These men will work directly with our Lodge Representatives to offer The Degrees of the Scottish Rite to all Master Masons in the Tulsa Jurisdiction.

The 365 Club Have you heard about The Tulsa Charitable and Educational Foundation’s 365 Club? It’s a great program in which a Broth-

er pledges $1.00 per day to the Endowment Fund of the Tulsa RiteCare Clinic! This $365.00 donation is tax deductible, and

it is a fantastic way to ensure your Tulsa RiteCare Clinic is funded each day. In 2014 we had twenty members of the 365

Club, and we hope to double that number in 2015. You can choose to make your donation all at once, or begin monthly in-

stallments until the full balance is reached. Please help our children by pledging $1.00 per day to the endowment fund of the

The Tulsa Scottish Rite and Junior ROTC

In 1994 Junior ROTC was brought to Tulsa, Oklahoma with the opening of 7 high school programs. There were 5 Army programs opened that year, East Central, Nathan Hale, McLain, Memorial and Will Rogers. The Air Force started a program in Booker T. Washington while the Navy brought a program to Central High School. The following year (1995) the Army opened 2 more schools at Thomas Edison and Daniel Webster High Schools. There are now a total of 17 high schools in Northeast Oklahoma with Junior ROTC programs. Including the aforementioned schools, there are 4 Air Force programs at Jenks, Inola, Muskogee and Union. The Navy has a program at Claremore, and the Marine Corps has 2 programs in Bixby and Sapulpa. The Army also supports a program at Tahlequah high school and a senior program at NSU. All of these programs are supported by The Tulsa Valley of the Scottish Rite with a ribbon and medal set

that is awarded annually to one outstanding cadet who demonstrates scholastic excellence and Americanism and who meet the following criteria:

1) Have contributed the most among cadets on campus to encourage and demonstrate Americanism, by deeds or conduct during participation in integrated curricular activities or community projects.

2) Have demonstrated academic excellence by being in the top 25 percent of his or her academic class.

3) Have demonstrated a potential for outstanding leadership by exhibiting qualities of dependability, good citizenship and patriotism.

4) Be in the 3rd year of a 4 year program.

The motto of Junior ROTC is ”To motivate young people to be better citizens.” We do that by having our students involved in community service activities. The students in Junior ROTC devote thousands of hours each year to community service. Over the years we have participated in the flag raising activities at Floral Haven for Memorial Day where we raised approximately 3400 flags for our veterans who have passed before us, and we also participate the following day helping the family’s raise the flags of their veterans who have passed away in the last year. Junior ROTC also has worked with the Senior Olympics, Special Olympics, The Tulsa Run, Community Food Bank, Salvation Army Christmas Tree project, Red Cross blood drives, Tulsa Sports Commission, Hershey Track meet, and Dillard’s VIP night. In addition to community services we also support the community by providing Color Guards for those who request them and for sporting events such as football games, the Tulsa Shock, and the BMX National event held in Tulsa. You will also see us marching in the Veterans Day Parade and the Martin Luther King Day parade.

The curriculum for Junior ROTC is as varied as the students we teach. Our main focus throughout the year is based on Leadership and we supplement that with classes on Financial Planning, Health, Citizenship, American History and World Geography. In all of the Junior ROTC programs we have had many students that have been Valedictorians and Salutatorians and students who have gone on to be doctors, lawyers, scientists and even teachers. Our goal is to graduate cadets so they may be the best at whatever they choose to do in life.

I arrived in Tulsa to work with Tulsa Public Schools Junior ROTC in 1996, and met with John Alexander, 33rd degree who was the General Secretary at the time. He asked me at that meeting to be the point of contact for the Valley regarding the Scottish Rite awards, I accepted and for the last 20 years it has been a pleasure and an honor to serve our valley, school districts and the young people of Northeast Oklahoma.

Supreme Council Leadership Conference

During the years when the Supreme Council does not meet (even numbered years) they host regional Leadership Conferences for any and all Scottish Rite Masons to attend. During these conferences, the attendees are divided into groups

and presented with current issues our Fraternity is facing. The idea is to bring men from different backgrounds and vocations together, and allow them to develop ideas or solutions. This approach was very beneficial in the 2014 Leadership

Conference because it lead to the development of our Valley Membership Achievement Project – or VMAP. 2016’s Conferences will work to expand the VMAP so more Valleys can benefit.

The 2016 Leadership Conference dates and locations are as follows: March 18 & 19 – Houston, TX

Eric Can Communicate!

When Eric was two years old, he was using very few consonant sounds. His words were mostly vowel sounds, like ah for watch and oo for balloons. Now at age three, Eric has learned most

consonant sounds. We will continue to work until all consonant sounds are in all the right places. Eric’s mom said that he was toilet training, and that it would really help if he could say the relevant

words. After a great deal of practice in weekly sessions here and daily at home, Eric can now say

pee pee, poo poo, and potty. Any parent or grandparent knows how important those words are at age three. Besides the important three p words, Eric now easily says many words starting with the p sound.

Each time a new consonant sound is mastered, Eric’s speech becomes easier to understand. He has a lot to say, and finally

he is having success communicating.

Three Things to Think about before Writing Your Will

It may be an unpleasant task to think about your own mortality, but the fact is, writing a will is one of the smartest financial planning activities you can do. Given this, Fox Business asked some of its contributors to discuss some important things

to know before writing a will.

1. A will doesn't actually cover all of your assets. If you own property in accounts that have beneficiary designations (IRAs, 401k’s, and life insurance policies), then the people you choose as beneficiaries will inherit those proceeds, regardless of what your will says. And if you own property in joint tenancy with rights of survivorship, your joint tenant will take full possession automatically at your death. Pay-on-death bank accounts likewise give the surviving account holder the rights to withdraw all of the money when you pass away. Also, property held in trust is handled outside of probate.

Make sure your beneficiary designations are consistent with your will. If you make changes to your will, you should review those beneficiary designations to see if similar changes are needed. If you fail to do this, your effort to update your estate planning could create major gaps that will wreck your plans for the distribution of assets after death.

2. Naming your will's executor takes some thought. The executor is the individual in charge of taking care of your affairs and ensur-ing that your will is executed as you stipulated. This is a big decision: the executor is responsible for several extremely important tasks. These include:

You need to choose the right person for this important job. Many people select their spouse, an adult child, or a trusted friend. But you can also name an attorney as executor. You also can name joint executors and alternates in case the executor you choose can’t serve or he passes away before you do. Consider these thoughts when selecting an executor. It should be someone you trust to make the right decisions, and a person who is smart enough to ask for help from a qualified estate planning attorney when they need it. Naming several of your children as co-executors might be hazardous, as this could lead to arguments. Your executor doesn't need to be a financial guru, but should be a person you trust with good business and common sense.

3. Take extra care in writing your will if you have young children. In many instances, children can’t deal with the responsibility of inheriting property. Also, if your son or daughter inherits property outright when they're still a minor, the probate court will appoint an individual to be a property guardian if you don't. So it makes total sense to carefully consider whom you want managing your assets for your child after you pass. This is especially vital because a court-appointed guardian will hand over all the inherited property to your child on the day he or she turns 18.

100 Years of The House of the Temple

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the opening of the House of the Temple. At the 1909 Biennial Sessions the Supreme Council unanimously voted to greatly change the headquarters. Sovereign Grand Commander James D. Richardson determined to build a new Temple that would be “an ornament to the Capital City of our Nation.” Grand Commander Richardson passed away on July 24, 1914 before the Temple was completed, so the dedication fell to his successor, Sovereign Grand Commander George F. Moore. On October 18, 1915 at 10:00AM the Supreme Council was opened at the previous Temple. A procession was then formed lead by mounted police and a military band. The Officers and Active Thirty-third degree members followed in automobiles, and the remaining Scottish Rite Masons followed on foot in four columns. At 2:30PM that afternoon the dedication of the building took place outside in front of the Great Door of the new House of the Temple. On August 22, 2015 at 9:00AM the Active Members of the Supreme Council pro-cessed out the front doors and took their seats while Sovereign Grand Commander Ronald A. Seale was escorted by the DC Valley Knights of St. Andrew. Grand Commander Seale then used the script from the 1915 dedication, and other Active Members assisted him in rededicating the Temple with corn, wine, and oil. The entire ceremony is available at www.scottishrite.org.
