The Times They Are A-Changin, the title of a 1964 Bob Dylan classic, has never been truer.

Remaining organized as a physician group is challenging amid all the changes we face every day as we practice medicine. As President of Tulsa County Medical Society membership recruitment and retention is priority ONE for me. Why? Individually we are constituents, collectively we have more power and influence over the laws that govern our professional lives and our patients’ wellbeing.

Serving in the leadership of TCMS, OSMA and AMA, I have personally experienced the value of being connected to my colleagues. I have cultivated friendships and allies…both important, and to me a reason for all physicians in Tulsa County to consider membership.

I wanted to share the goals I have outlined for our organization this year and I invite you to call me anytime to share your thoughts. I am interested in your opinion and receptive to your ideas. My cell phone number is 405-535-0594.

Explore “Group” Membership

This is has been discussed for the past couple of years. As more and more of our colleagues become part of large health systems it seems appropriate to continue the dialogue about a structure that could increase membership.

Initiate Collaboration with Tulsa Osteopathic Medical Society

Continue inviting TOMS members to join us for meetings and events and explore other opportunities to work together to benefit our medical community.

Define Marketing Strategies with OSMA

EVERY OKLAHOMA PHYSICIAN IS WORTH, ON AVERAGE, $1.9 MILLION ANNUALLY TO HIS OR HER COMMUNITY, BASED ON AN EXTENSIVE ECONOMIC IMPACT SURVEY CONDUCTED BY THE AMA. THE REPORT LOOKS AT BOTH THE PHYSICIANS’ DIRECT ECONOMIC ACTIVITY AND THE SUPPORT SERVICES NEEDED TO MAINTAIN THEIR PRACTICES. SEE THE BREAKDOWN BELOW OR FOR THE FULL REPORT GO TO www.PhysiciansEconomicImpact.org.

Physicians bring economic health to Oklahoma’s communities.

Beyond their role in safeguarding the health of our communities, physicians in Oklahoma are a major driver of the state economy, spurring economic growth and creating jobs across all industries.

Oklahoma physicians hire locally, buy locally and support the local economy. Through the creation of jobs with strong wages and benefits paid to workers across the state, physicians empower a high-quality, sustainable workforce that generates state and local tax revenue for community investments. Physicians’ economic output—the value of the goods and services provided—helps other businesses grow through their own purchasing and through the purchasing of their employees. Each dollar in direct output applied to physician services supports $1.90 in economic activity in Oklahoma, and physician-driven economic activity is greater than legal services, home health care, higher education, and nursing home and residential care.

View the 2018 American Medical Association Economic Impact Study to learn more about the contributions physicians make to the health of Oklahoma’s economy at PhysiciansEconomicImpact.org.

Presidents Letter Continued from page 1 Continue with Student Engagement/Activities

434 medical students who attend OU School of Community Medicine and OSU College of Osteopathic Medicine are members of TCMS. We host several activities each year for the students and their families. Do you remember the importance of your relationship with practicing physicians when you were a medical student? Our TCMS Board made a commitment several years ago to match medical students with physician mentors and beyond that provide opportunities for students to learn more about the business and politics of medicine. We have seen a dramatic increase in the participation of medical students at both the state and national level during this time. We have also observed how important the voices of the medical students are to legislators. They want to know how the physicians of the future see the practice of medicine going forward. Their opinion is relevant to legislation currently under consideration.

I am pleased to share with you on page 2 a snapshot of the impact of physicians on the economic health of Oklahoma. This recently published data indicates the average state and local tax annual revenue generated by each physician is $67,400. We are doing good work!

In addition to the impact on our economy and as important, is the impact of our community support (Project TCMS $4 million in donated specialty care, $1.2 million in medical student scholarships and, $21.6 million in recycled medications). These programs are life changing.

PS, if you can serve as Doctor of the Day (for a half-day or a full day)at the Legislature in February, please email [email protected]. Also, the Medicine Day Reception will be held on February 20th at 5:30 p.m. at OSMA (313 NE 50th St, OKC).
