JUMP STARTA new program was piloted this summer at Tulpehocken. The program is called Jump Start and is geared for in-

coming Kindergarten students. The program was designed to give students who need a little extra help a jump start before beginning their formal schooling at Tulpehocken.

We are going to assess the progress of the students who attended Jump Start and then make a decision on the future of the program. At first glance we are seeing positive results with our incoming Kindergarten students who attended the program.

If you are not sure of what you should be doing to help your child prepare for Kindergarten, or would like resources to help you as you work with your child please contact the principal of the building your child will attend as an incoming Kinder-gartener in 2017-18. Additionally, we plan on holding a parent resource night this fall which will be open to all parents of incoming Kindergartner students. The goal is to answer ques-tions, provide support, materials and anything you feel as a parent would help you with your pre-kindergarten student. We will be sending mailers out based on census data to invite all incoming Kindergarten parents.

If you do not receive an invitation through the mail by October 31st, please contact the school or district office and we will make sure you know the date and time of the program.

We will hold official Kindergarten registration in March for both Penn-Bernville and Bethel Elementary.

SUPERINTENDENTS CORNERDear Community Members, You may have read the October article in the Reading Eagle titled The Cost of CyberCharter Schools; Academic and Financial. The article was published to enlighten the community on cyber charter school funding, how those funds are spent, and the performance of the cyber schools. If you missed it, I will provide you with a brief overview of the article. Enrollment in a cyber charter school outside of the home district is not tuition free as many advertisements claim. Tulpehocken sent $667,812 to cyber charter schools for tuition in 2014-15. Tulpehocken is not alone, that same year, Berks County Schools sent over $23Million to cyber charter schools. The total cost to Pennsylvania tax payers for cyber charter schools in 2014-15 was $398.8 Million. Additionally, the advertisements that you see do cost money. According to the Annual

Financial Report, on the Department of Educations website, one of the cyber charter schools with a School Performance Profile score of 48.8 out of 100, and an operating budget of over $110 Million, spent $3,589,695 on Community Relations Services in 2014-15. In addition to the financial burden to school districts a more important concern is the performance of cyber

charter schools across the commonwealth. In 2015 only 4 of the 13 cyber charter schools in Pennsylvania had School Performance Profile scores higher than 50 out of a possible score of 100. Online learning can be a good option for some students. As a matter of fact, here at Tulpehocken we offer a

quality online learning option for our students, at a much lower cost than cyber charter schools. Tulpehockens cyber option is call Tulpehocken Virtual Academy (TVA). We currently have students enrolled in TVA who complete all of their coursework at home, as well as, students who have a split schedule with some courses online and some classes face-to-face at school. If you are considering a cyber charter option for your child, or if you currently have a child enrolled in a cyber

charter school, I encourage you to contact your building principal or district office to discuss our TVA option and how it can work for your child.

DISTRICT MAKERSPACES BUZZING WITH ACTIVITY!Tulpehocken students, grades K-7, are now regularly engaging in 21st century learning inside the makerspaces

located within Bethel, Penn Bernville, and now the Junior-Senior High School Library! Twenty-first century learn-ing focuses on improving four critical skills: collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and creativity. Students working in the makerspaces are excited and engaged in the learning process like never before!

Classes in these makerspaces are buzzing with energetic learning! At times, the sound you may hear in fact is a buzzing noise; a favorite circuit kit used by the students comes with buzzers - the littleBits. These kits are a big hit in the world of STEM education, and we have multiple kits in all three makerspaces! These electronic modules snap together with tiny magnets that make rapid prototyping easy and fun. They are perfect for school makerspaces; there is no soldering, no wiring, no programming. Each bit type is color coded and has a simple, unique function (light, sound, sensors, buttons, thresholds, pulse, motors, etc); complexity of the circuit depends upon the number and type of bits used. LittleBits can be used by multiple age groups. So far, half of our 7th grade has been creating with them and soon elementary students will be digging into their kits.

Elementary (K-6) students were thrilled to learn that their classes will visit the makerspaces at least twice a month this school year. Some of their visits will be focused on learning new technology and some on using the engineering design process, while other times they will have the opportunity to simply tinker, discover, and innovate guided by their own interests. The curriculum being followed in the makerspaces is aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards and is designed to promote scientific thinking and inquiry. With every visit, students will be practicing the 4Cs (creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and communication).

Stay abreast of all district makerspace activities on social media: @TulpySTEM on Twitter and Tulpy MakerSpaces on Google+.

WHATS HAPPENING AT PENN-BERNVILLE?We are off to a great start at Penn-Bernville Elementary School. On September 1st we celebrated Tulpy Pride Day,

the kickoff for our School Wide Effective Behavior System (SWEBS). On Tulpy Pride Day students traveled to five different classrooms and participated in lessons explaining and reinforcing the five school-wide rules.

On September 1st Penn-Bernville also had our No Place for Hate designation. This marks the 10th year that Penn-Bernville has been a No Place for Hate school. This years No Place for Hate lessons will focus on challenging bullying and bias. During the week of September 14th all classrooms visited the Mobile Ag Lab and participated in various hands-on ag-science lab activities. During the month of October students participated in Spirit Week, Red Ribbon Week, and the annual Halloween Parade.

In the upcoming months a new playground will be installed at PB. The new playground equipment will be in-stalled by Third Little Pig Playsystems Company LLC. The new playground will be in the same location but will be expanded to approximately 55 feet by 39 feet. Penn-Bernville students, parents, and staff are excited for the new playground.

WHATS HAPPENING AT BETHEL ELEMENTARY?We have had an exciting start to the year at Bethel Elementary School! During the first month of school Mr. Brown

took time to meet with students in grades 3-6 to discuss the expectations of students. If you have a student in grades 3-4, take a moment to ask them about Mr. Browns unexpected pizza delivery. Students in grades 5-6 got to experi-ence what it felt like to receive an ice cream sundae with unexpected toppings! As Mr. Brown worked with students through this lesson, he related the unexpected food items back to what is expected in our schools. Mr. Brown set forth the following expectations for the students.

The students at Bethel Elementary will be:1. Prepared to learn, meet our expectations and complete work on time.2. Willing to take chances in their education and stand up for what is right, even when it isnt the popular choice.3. Respectful to all students and adults by using kind words and actions.4. Responsible when they are being prepared, willing, and respectful. Our expectations were also shared with students in grades K-2 during our No Place for Hate designation and again

with all students at the Bethel Tulpy Pride Day. Students will continue to receive TULPY tickets for meeting expec-tations. Students will, once again, be able to use tickets to purchase merchandise in our TULPY store. We are looking forward to a fantastic year. Bethel Elementary students are the best around and we are so proud of their hard work and dedication.

ANNUAL SUMMER BAND CONCERT AND MARCHING BAND SHOWCASEHot, hot, hot! Temperatures soared but the music was hotter, on August 11th, 2016. Tulpehocken students played for

a huge crowd at the annual Summer Band Concert and Marching Band Showcase! The elementary band students were up first, with a great selection of music. Under the direction of Mr. Bernat, they

started with a nice fanfare called Statement. Then the band played a variety of styles including the fiery Spirits Ablaze, the raucous Clash of Warriors, the Latin flavored Fiesta de la Playa and the popular radio hit Cheer-leader. The marching band students then combined with the elementary kids to play another pop song called Best Day of My Life.

Under the direction of Mr. Schrack, the marching band took the field to present their field show entitled Classics of Rock. The marching bands sharp movements were enhanced by three of the most iconic classic rock songs. Start-ing with Shout It Out Loud by the group Kiss, the band then moved to a song that surely had the crowd singing along - Queens hit, Bohemian Rhapsody. They concluded their show with every guitar wannabes favorite Led Zepplin song, Stairway to Heaven.

Mr. Schrack and Mr. Bernat would like to thank all the students who participated, and the Tulpehocken Parents Music Associa-tion for donating the refreshments and for volunteering to serve those refreshments to the crowd.

ACTOR COMES TO PENN-BERNVILLE ELEMENTARYOn August 29, 2016, actor Michael Weston came to Penn-Bernville Elementary to speak to various grade levels

about his role in the television show Houdini and Doyle. Michael Weston is the husband of Priscilla Ahn, who is a graduate from Tulpehocken School District. Michael currently resides in Los Angeles with Priscilla and their son, River. Michael discussed what it was like playing Harry Houdini and what he had to do to prepare for the role. The students learned about the friendship between Houdini and Arthur Conan Doyle. Michael shared his experience of being on a TV set through photos of the set and various accounts of filming on location in London. The students re-ally enjoyed when he described the tank of water that he had to be submerged in upside down. Simply stated, Mi-chaels presentation and his stories of filming were intriguing and engaging for all the students.

GIRLS SOCCER 2016 UPCOMING SEASON ARTICLEAfter a tough season last year, our girls high school soccer team is back and better than ever. Returning coaches,

Paul Zerbe and Dean Evans, are now accompanied by the new goalie coach, Larry Rittle. There are seven returning seniors leading the team with great leadership and dedication. These seniors are Shayna Bashore, Kendra Benzel, Stacy Martin, Maura Boyle, Ally Evans, Madison Miller, and Olivia Stephan. Every practice contains hard work and focus to help bring this team a winning title. At the beginning of the season, there were some non-divisional losses against tough opponents; however after some determination and hard work, we achieved multiple wins. Our goal is to make the district finals once again and move forward from there!

CROSS COUNTRY This year we have the largest cross country team we have had in a long time with 18 runners. We are also excited

to have a female runner this year, Brandie Boltz. Our captains, Tanner Schlater, Lucas Miles, and Jacob Cox, are do-ing a great job leading our team on and off the course. Despite graduating three of our top five runners last year, our team is proving we can still be competitive. The cross country team finished in second place at both invitationals they attended and many athletes earned medals and ribbons. The Ben Bloser invitational was a breakout race for our team. Our top six runners earned medals and the entire team ran season best times. As long as everyone stays healthy and works hard the team is hoping to finish in the top two places again at districts this year, which will earn them a trip to states. Great job Tulpy XC and good luck!

GOLF TEAMThe buzz surrounding the Tulpehocken golf team centers on junior Chase Miller, who had a phenomenal summer

competing against the best players in the county. After a nice run in the Match Play Championship, Chase won the Junior Championship and narrowly missed out by a stroke on the most prestigious Berks County prize, The Hawley Quier Trophy. Those battles have left him poised and primed to bring home major hardware in the individual compe-titions of scholastic golf.

Chase is not the only story, however. Perhaps the biggest surprise is the sheer number of students out for the team (seventeen at last count) including three very enthusiastic girls. Seniors Ryder Huey, Wes Wormser, and Gage Hal-deman bring experience while sophomores Josh Woomer and Derek Rank have been steady contributors. Junior Cody Etchberger and freshman Korey Emerich round out the varsity squad, which has notched five victories thus far. Junior varsity matches were also added to the schedule, allowing more players to experience the competitive thrill of this great sport. A friendly scramble tournament of mixed Hamburg and Tulpehocken students was just one highlight of this remarkable season.

GIRLS TENNIS TEAMAs one of the captains of the girls tennis team, Shyanne Koenig to be exact, I am rather proud of our girls. We may

not have won a large number of matches, but that doesnt mean we didnt try our best. We had a lot of new girls on this years team, with only five of us returning from last year. However, everyone has made a great improvement. A large number of teams we played this year were really tough. So, as nice as it would have been to win more matches, we can at least say we tried our best against strong opponents. Next year I hope that the team can win more matches, continue to be successful, and most importantly, have fun. As a captain, I always did my best to encourage the girls to have fun, which I believe is the most important reason for playing a sport. I hope that the team will keep this in mind for next year, and continue to pass the message on.

My name is Cassidy Blankenbiller and I am also one of the captains on the girls tennis team. I am really proud of our girls and how far we have come this year. It was rewarding to see all the girls come together as a team and support one another. We had a total of eight new girls who joined the team this year, with only five returning. Despite the fact that we had many first year players, Im still proud of the team because the girls worked hard during the open gyms in the summer and at practice. The work paid off, and the team improved throughout the season. Even though the scores werent always where we would have liked them to be, we all tried our absolute best. In the end the scores didnt matter to us because we all played our best at each and every match, and had lots of fun. Instead of becoming frustrated, we tried to learn from our mistakes and make improvements. Coach Schuppert always told us that our strokes wouldnt be perfect just like that- skills and strengths build up over time. I believe that this is true, and I hope the team continues to be committed to making these improvements over the next few years. I wish the rest of the team good luck in future seasons!

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPALI am so excited to brag about an exciting campaign we have begun this year! Tulpy Pride is alive at the junior-

senior high school. To celebrate all the great things that are happening, we have decided to create a program called #TulpyPride. This is a hashtag that many of you have seen for years on our athletic and schools twitter page. We decided to expand upon the idea to incorporate it in our daily operations. The purpose of this program is to recognize the positive aspects of our school. Too often we allow the negative things to overshadow the positives. Staff and stu-dents are asked to recognize accomplishments, acts, and deeds of each other. A wall in the office has been dedicated to #tulpypride for students and staff to sign their name in recogni-tion. Once a month we will then recognize students.

If you are connected to Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook, be sure to follow us to not only see the awesome things that our school, students, and staff are accomplishing but also get the latest updates on events and happenings.

Interested individuals should contact Dory Triest at 717-933-4611 ext. 2116 for information.
