From The Rev’d Ben Bentham A big thank you to you for participating in the Deanery service last week. If I had it to do over again, I would try to find ways of making people visible. It was an interesting experience, from my point of view, demanding more in time and effort than any act of worship I can remember, more because of having to wrestle with new technology than anything else. But of course, we discovered too (as the BBC is discovering) the limitations of what is available to us. The scary thing I suppose is that after this, being forced to use technology to take worship into people's homes, we would be crazy not to continue with it in some form after the lockdown is over.  We should probably be grateful to God for this opportunity to think about what we do, how we do it, who we reach, who we should be trying to reach but don't and what we are expecting from those who just might be looking at Christian faith on whatever level. We should also, it seems to me have it drilled into our heads that the people LEAST likely to start coming to church are the elderly. So, the young, families and middle aged don't come

because we are not creative enough to reach them and the elderly don't come because they consider themselves too old to change.  I think we should be praying seriously that God will, by his Spirit, guide us in our thinking so that mission becomes top priority done by everyone.

CHURCHWARDENS MATTERS

The builders have made a really good start. The pews are looking amazing. The kitchen has been ordered and the painting is making good progress. Some of the PCC have had the opportunity to see inside the church and we are really pleased with the progress being made. Geoff has started the mammoth task involved in the paperwork.

This week some of the children returned to Whitchurch Primary School after a great deal of hard work by all the staff. We think of everyone as they adapt to the new school life

From SueWhat a disappointment! Pentecost Sunday and we were unable to sing ‘Send The Fire!’ together. I love it, even though I appreciate that it isn’t a favourite with many of you. It was sung at one of the services when we were made Churchwardens. I love its energy and the lyrics about Pentecost. I was delighted to see that it was included in the hymns on ‘Songs of Praise ‘last Sunday.

I hope that many of you watched the Deanery Service on YouTube. Well done to Rev. Bentham for organising it and thanks to everyone who prepared and took part in the service.Personally, I am moved by many hymns and I expect like you, many have particular meaning because they have been used for a specific life event. As you can imagine, one of my favourites is ‘Guide Me, O Thou Great Redeemer!’ sung of course to the tune, ‘Cwm Rhondda.’ It is especially wonderful when John Sparkes sings the harmony parts in the line, ‘Bread Of Heaven.’ I know that for many of you ‘Be Still For The Presence Of The Lord, ‘has a special meaning.Prayerfulness is reflected through lyrics of hymns and have the power to calm or lift spirits. During these strange times, what better hymn to envelop all of our feelings than ‘Brother, Sister, Let Me Serve You.’ We know that our frontline people in many occupations have had to do just that. I should like to pay tribute to our own Mandy, who has had to work all through this crisis. The words in the hymn sum up all of our beliefs and experiences, from singing to wobbly moments which we are all going through.                   Brother, Sister, let me serve you,                   Let me be as Christ to you.                  Pray that I may have the grace to                  Let you be my servant too.Be prepared …… we shall sing ‘Send The Fire!’ next year with real hwyl, ie gusto.

CUP CAKES Thank you to Lesley, who has helped us before and recently donated the sales of her lovely cupcakes to the church. Thank you also to those who bought cupcakes as a donation to the church. We really appreciate your generosity.

FROM BRIGID AND THOMASWe're continuing to enjoy the weather and work on the garden. We've also had a couple of forays across the border. We had a longish trip to Wigmore in north Herefordshire, where we had a lovely picnic. The castle there is a wonderful romantic ruin. We went to Kilpeck yesterday for a little walk around and a mini picnic. I think picnicking is ideal in the circumstances! We hope you're finding life a little easier with the easing of lockdown in England.

Yolande Watson- Over the past 10 weeks, I have been assessing the impact of Covid-19 on dispersed rural settlements in my ward and I would like to build on the excellent work that has been carried out in your Parish by the Good Neighbours Scheme and Woods of Whitchurch (to create an online Food Hub) by providing isolated individuals with a mobile device in order for them to a) learn how to use the internet and b) connect them to their immediate community to order food/essential supplies/ use e-health technologies (to talk with key health and social care work/ link with car share scheme/ keep up to date with local news and activities/ enable volunteers to ‘virtually check in’ with
