FORTY-FIFTI-I RENEWAL Tulane and Louisiana ·state University

today renew one of the South's oldest football rivalries in Tulane Stadium before perhaps the largest crowd to ever witness the traditional spectacle.

The Green Wave and the Tigers face each other for the 45th time in the annual ~limactic battle which was inaugurated in 1893.

The ;Bayou Bengals hold a slim 22 to 18 victory margin over the Green Wave .with four of the games ending in deadlocks. · ·Winner of today's ·game will earn possession of "Tl1~ Rag," a trophy emblematic of

1 victory in the annual gridiron tussle.

"The Rag" isn't an imposing trophy. In fact, it's nothing more than a rectangular piece-of cloth which is divided diagonally so that the colors of each school occupy half of the banner. The purple and gold of L. S. U. and the olive green and sky blue of Tulane blend with the official seal of

_the state of Louisiana in the center.

This award to the winni~g t~am was

~."_.,..'

first presented in 1939 with the purpose of fostering friendlier relations between the two universities. Immediately following today's game, student body officials of Tulane and L.S.U. and the captains of the two teams will meet at midfield for the presentation of the "Rag" which will be retained until next year's contest. ·

Today's encounter promises an all-out offensive battle. And if it follows the pattern fixed by the 1946 melee, there will be plenty of scoring by both teams. Most of the principals in that 41-27 skirmish are on hai1d today to take up where they left off.

As usual, this season finale provides the last <?_f>portunity for several players on both,+.t 'teams to wear the colors of their respective alma maters.

Among those who will finish their grid· careers with today's game are Captain Leonard Finley, Marvin McCain and Ray Olsen for Tulane while Y. A. Tittle, Dan Sandifer, Jim Cason and Ray Coates will be amo!).g those playing their last game in Tiger uhiform.

Basketball takes the spotlight at Tu .. lane university with today's close of the football season. Typical Tulane spirit is shown as Hal Peck is congratulated by teammates and Coach Cliff Wells following last year's Merriwell victory over Georgia Tech. Peck scored four points in 20 seconds to turn defeat into a 47-45 triumph.

Don't Buck Traffic

and Parking~~Go by

STREET CAR or ·TROLLEY COACH

Come on Team of Football Fans! It's time for a little skull practice. This isn't a trick play diagramed. It's just a bit of co a chin' in how to get to the stadium the ea.sy way . by Street Car or Trolley Coach.

No gear-shifting game of stop and start driving for the street. car or bus rider. No parking problems either-and no need for that mad dash before the game's over to make a quick getaway. In street cars and coaches you ride relaxed, free from the wear and . tear of driving through heavy traffic .

When your ''goal to go'' is the Tulane Stadium, don't buck the line of snailpace drivers ... Go By Street Car or Trolley Coach. The South Claiborne car, the Freret and the Broadway Trolley Coaches take you to the stadium and home again in comfort.

Above, another fight for the sphere rages between Greenie and Tiger players. Below, fruits of victory are reaped in this after-game shot of Player Jim Riffey, 15, and team mates. Riffey's fielder with the ball in the air at the final whistle gave the Wave a 40-38 decision over its arch-rival.

ALMA MATER

We p~aise thee fo~ t:hy past, 0 Alma Mater! · Thy hand hath done its work full faithfully; The incense of thy spirit hath ascended And filled America from sea to sea!

We praise thee for thy present, Alma Mater! Today thy children look to thee for bread! Thou leadest them to dreams and actions

. splendid! The hunger of their. souls is richly fed!

We praise thee for thy future, Alma Mater! The vista of its glory gleameth far! We shall ever be part of thee, great Mother! There thou will be where e'er thy children are!

Chorus Olive Green and Blue, we love thee. Pledge we now our fealty true. Where the trees are ever greenest, Wbere the skies are purest blue. Hear us now, 0 Tulane, hear us. As we proudly sing to thee! Take from us our hearts' devotion! Thine we are, and thine shall be!

ROLL ON. TULANE
