QUIN GRESHAMPRODUCING ARTISTIC DIRECTOR2019 marks Mr. Gresham’s fifteenth season in Arrow Rock. During the 2018 season, Mr. Gresham directed the 5th annual production of A Christmas Carol, which he also adapted. In previous seasons, Mr. Gresham has directed The Hound of the Baskervilles, Stand By Your Man: The Tammy Wynette Story, Around the World in 80 Days, Cotton Patch Gospel, Love Letters (starring Tab Hunter and Joyce DeWitt), The Wizard of Oz, The Music Man, Camelot, To Kill A Mockingbird, Run For Your Wife, The Fantasticks, The Producers, Hairspray, Sleuth, West Side Story, Little Women the Musical, Into the Woods, Misery, 1776,

Tuesdays with Morrie, Dracula, Peter Pan and Driving Miss Daisy.Also an actor, Quin has been a frequent company member, having appeared in 50 productions at The Lyceum since 1999. Quin’s favorites include James Leeds in Children of a Lesser God, Felix Ungar in Oscar and Felix, A New Look at the Odd Couple, Bud Frump in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Algernon in The Importance of Being Earnest, Tom in The Glass Menagerie, Arles etc. in Greater Tuna, A Tuna Christmas, Red, White and Tuna, and Tuna Does Vegas, Matthew in Cotton Patch Gospel, Max in Lend Me a Tenor, Sydney in God’s Favorite, Ernst in Cabaret, the Tinman in The Wizard of Oz, and Sam in Shenandoah.In 2011, the production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee at his alma mater, Webster University, was named the 2011 Best Musical in St. Louis by The Riverfront Times. Quin’s work has also been seen at the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, Totem Pole Playhouse, The Riverside Theatre, The National Arts Club, Stephens College, Providence College, Rocky Mountain Repertory Theatre and The Texas Shakespeare Festival.He currently serves on the Board of Directors for L.E.A.D. Institute, an non-profit organization committed to providing services to deaf and hard of hearing individuals in the state of Missouri. Like his two predecessors, Quin is a proud graduate of the Conservatory of Theatre Arts at Webster University.

STEVE BERTANIMANAGING DIRECTORMr. Bertani is in his 14th season as Managing Director. Originally from St. Louis, Steve came to The Lyceum in 2006. Previously, he was a Division Manager for Citigroup’s Primerica Financial Services earning much recognition for team leadership and client development. He spent 12 seasons at Stages St. Louis theatre company (1991-2003), ending his tenure as General Manager, and was a firefighter/EMT at Eureka Fire Protection District in St. Louis County (1998-2005). Steve has experienced all aspects of the theatre business from front of house operations to backstage, and has appeared onstage at

the Mule Barn Theatre and Post Playhouse in productions of Working, The Nerd, Dracula, A Day in Hollywood–A Night in the Ukraine and Gypsy. He made his Lyceum Theatre stage debut in the 2007 production of The Sunshine Boys followed by cameo appearances in You Can’t Take It With You, and The Man Who Came To Dinner. Having been a drummer for over 30 years, Steve played one of the Bodacious Bobcats in Always…Patsy Cline, the role of Jerry Allison (one of The Crickets) in Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story, and played drums for Little Shop of Horrors (2014) and most recently Beehive–The 60’s Musical (2017). A few of his favorite Lyceum productions include 1776, Tuesdays With Morrie, Into the Woods, Cats, Proof, Arsenic and Old Lace, On Golden Pond, The Diary of Anne Frank, Run For Your Wife, Buddy… The Buddy Holly Story, To Kill A Mockingbird, A Tuna Christmas, Rumors, and the Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol. Steve worked as a stage manager for numerous pop artist concerts in St. Louis, including C & C Music Factory, Michael Damian, Donny Osmond, Belinda Carlyle; and most recently, Sawyer Brown at The Lyceum. His community involvement included service on the Saline County League of Emergency Planning Commission (2012-2017), and district chief with the Saline County Fire Protection District (retired in 2017). He is a graduate of Tarkio College in Tarkio, MO. Steve and his wife Elizabeth live in Saline County along with her children Noah and Lauren, and their son Jack Anthony Bertani. Steve gives a heartfelt thanks to each of you for making every year possible at The Lyceum.

About the Lyceum

If Walls Could Speak...What a story they would tell!More than half a century ago, an amazingly committed group of dreamers set out to create the unlikely theatre that we continue to enjoy today. And what a dream! In 1961, Arrow Rock lacked its current picturesque environs. According to Founding Artistic Director, Henry Swanson, “The town was essentially in the last stages of decay and disrepair...” The Lyceum’s first home was in an abandoned church dating back to the 1870s, the lobby through which you entered into the theatre today. With the hope of keeping it from being torn down and salvaged for lumber, two Arrow Rock couples, the Lawrences and the Argubrights, purchased the church and began thinking about starting a theatre. Swanson, a professor at Christian College in Columbia was engaged as the theatre’s first Artistic Director. Swanson said, “I have always felt that good plays, well-acted, could draw an audience anywhere so I told them I would take a crack at it.” Swanson produced the first season for $3,500, $1,800 of which went toward a new roof.When Mr. Swanson retired from the Theatre in 1979, Michael Bollinger was named the Lyceum’s second Artistic Director. During Mr. Bollinger’s 25 year tenure, he expanded The Lyceum’s reach by introducing 20th century musicals to the repertoire, increasing attendance dramatically. In 1983, The Lyceum became the first theatre in Missouri to receive an award from the Missouri Arts Council (MAC). By 1990, thanks to increasing attendance and with the help of state income tax credits granted under the Missouri Neighborhood Assistance Program (NAP) and generous supporters, The Lyceum was able to raise several hundred thousand dollars to expand the theatre from 200 seats to the new 416-seat auditorium that you sit in today.In 2004 The Lyceum’s Board of Directors appointed Mr. Philip Coffield, a Lyceum veteran actor, director and 20 year Associate Artistic Director, as the theatre’s third Artistic Director. Mr. Coffield made plans for his first season, cast the shows and hired the many company members, but regrettably, due to mounting health issues, was unable to complete his first season as Artistic Director. Quin Gresham, a fellow Lyceum veteran and recently appointed Associate Artistic Director, stepped in as Artistic Director and went on to produce the 2005 Season. Sadly, Mr. Coffield passed away in early 2006, a loss felt deeply not just at The Lyceum, but throughout the entire theatre community.At the end of 2005, the Board of Directors asked Mr. Gresham to remain in Arrow Rock as The Lyceum’s fourth Artistic Director. Quin immediately proposed changing the theatre’s rotating repertory schedule to a stock season and, with the enthusiastic support of The Lyceum’s Board of Directors, restructured the theatre’s management approach. In 2006, Steve Bertani joined The Lyceum team as the theatre’s first Managing Director. Together, Mr. Bertani and Mr. Gresham continue to make facility improvements and to increase production quality, attendance, sponsorships and private support. In 2010 The Lyceum celebrated its 50th Season and, to celebrate this anniversary, more than half a million dollars was raised to ensure a good start to our second half century.The Lyceum Theatre is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization and is affiliated with Actors’ Equity Association, the Union of Professional Actors and Stage Managers in the United States, and the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society, a theatrical labor union. The Lyceum is considered one of Missouri’s oldest professional theatres and has a Board of Directors representing communities throughout Missouri.

What is it about stepmothers and princes and slippers and true love?

Variations of the Cinderella story are nearly universal. Sometime between 7 BC and 24 AD, a Greek geographer recorded a folk tale about Rhodopis, a slave girl whose sandal is stolen by an eagle. The bird drops the shoe on the lap of the Pharaoh who, amazed by this occurrence and the uniqueness of the shoe, sets out to find his queen. In an 860 AD Chinese version of this tale, Ye Xian befriends a fish who is in fact the reincarnation of her deceased mother. Though the fish is killed by her stepmother, the remaining bones magically help Ye Xian dress appropriately for a New Year festival where she loses a shoe, leading the king to the foot that fits. A 10th century Japanese story tells of Himegimi who is treated cruelly by her stepmother in favor of her own daughters, and who keeps Himegimi away from her true love, The Minor Captain. Himegimi runs away from home to a shrine in Osaka. Her true love sees the shrine in a dream where he eventually finds Himegimi and brings her back to the palace. There is a Vietnamese telling where the protagonist, Tam, is actually killed by her stepfamily and is reincarnated as a bird, a loom, and an apple before she is reunited with the king. The first European version of the story appears in a 1634 collection by Giambattista Basile, and tells the story of Cenerentola, who has a stepmother and wicked stepsisters, a missing slipper, and is the subject of a royal search aided by an island-bound fairy. Forty years later Charles Perrault wrote Cendrillon, which introduces the idea of a fairy godmother transforming a pumpkin into a golden carriage and mice into horses. The iconic glass slippers factor into this story for the first time. Perrault’s story teaches us that beauty is a gift, but hardly as significant as kindness, intellect, and good common sense. The Brothers Grimm took a crack at the story in the 19th century with their Aschenputtel, an intense story with no fairy godmother, but instead a magical tree that bestows gifts upon Aschenputtel, and a stepmother who advises her daughters to cut off portions of their feet to fit into the golden slipper that Aschenputtel lost at the prince’s feast. In 1950 the Walt Disney Studios were rescued from the edge of bankruptcy with their animated feature, Cinderella, largely based on Perrault’s Cendrillon. The Disney version emphasizes the power of having a dream with the song “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes.”

When Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II set out seven years after the Disney film to write an original musical for television, rather than the stage, they consulted with a CBS executive who was already looking for a vehicle for Julie Andrews, then starring in My Fair Lady on Broadway. The result was broadcast live on March 31, 1957. In 1958 the musical was performed on stage for the first time at the London Coliseum and in 1961 at the New York City Opera. The musical’s onstage success, combined with the absence of a good copy of the original, pre-videotape broadcast, prompted CBS to mount a new production with a new script in 1965, starring 18-year-old Lesley Ann Warren and Arrow Rock friend, Celeste Holm, as the Fairy Godmother. This production was broadcast many times over the next ten years. In 1997 a diverse cast brought Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella back to life, starring Brandy and Whitney Houston. In 2013, Douglas Carter Beane wrote yet another script for what was to be the musical’s first time on Broadway, featuring several new characters and new songs from the R&H catalog. And, most significantly, Beane changed the story from one about a damsel in distress to that of a spirited woman who sees injustice far more significant than her own personal woes. That is the show you will see today.

Rhodopis, Ye Xian, Himegimi, Tam, Cenerentola, Cendrillon, and Aschenputtel: by any name, Cinderella continues to charm and fascinate us. Like any really good story, one told so often that it has been polished by each retelling, Cinderella’s story will continue to change as the world around it changes. It’s that kind of story.

DELPHI BORICH (Ella) is thrilled to be making her Arrow Rock Lyceum Theatre debut as Ella after understudying the role on the National Tour of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella. She was most recently seen playing Viola in Twelfth Night at Dallas Theater Center, following performances as Belle in Beauty and the Beast at Theatre Under The Stars. Other regional credits include Kendra in Gloria (Asolo Repertory Theatre), Molly in Peter and the Starcatcher (Barn Stage Company), and Wendy in Peter Pan (Syracuse Stage). ADAM WEDESKY (Driver/Ensemble) Born and raised in Dallas, TX, Adam is a southern boy with a lot of charm. As a graduate of Broadway Dance Center’s Professional Semester, Adam has gotten to work with the best in the business. He’s performed in an exclusive launch event for TNT’s I Am The Night, Charlie Brown’s Christmas Spectacular, the 2018 Mary Kay Seminar, and Mamma Mia (Mill Mountain Theatre). He created and sustained a dance workshop business in NYC called Think Tank (@thinktank_nyc) and raises awareness on Alzheimer’s through his yearly benefit concert ArtsForAlz. “I am so excited to be part of Arrow Rock’s season this year! JOSH ASSOR (Choreographer) is thrilled to be returning to the Lyceum Theater this summer to help bring the iconic story of Cinderella to life. Some of his recent choreographic work includes New York Fashion Week, Audi Ottawa, a commercial for Modos Furniture, Mary Poppins and the world premiere of Medicine the Musical, which ran in New York City, Off-Broadway. He was the associate choreographer for the Saturday Night Fever National Tour as well as Kiss Me Kate at the Summer Theater of New Canaan. This summer Josh will be the associate choreographer of the Canadian premiere of Newsies. As a performer, some of his favorite credits include Neleus in Mary Poppins on Broadway and the 1st National Tour, Disney’s 1st National Tour of Newsies (asst. Dance Captain), Baby John in West Side story (Stratford Festival), Wizard Of Oz National Tour (Troika), and dancing on NBC’s Saturday Night Live with Jimmy Fallon. Josh has been featured in Dance Spirit Magazine, Dance Canada Quarterly, Industry Dance Magazine and Dance Plug Los Angeles. He has taught at Edge Performing Arts Center and is currently on faculty at the Broadway Dance Center in New York City where he has been a guest choreographer for many of their events.

Lyceum guests have seen many of Ryan’s designs over the last nine years including A Christmas Carol, Million Dollar Quartet, The King and I, Fiddler on the Roof, Boeing Boeing and many more. Highlights of his career include the Off-Broadway premiere of Lucky Duck with composer Henry Krieger (Dreamgirls) and writers Bill Russell (Sideshow) and Jeffery Hatcher (Emma, Tuesdays with Morrie), a series of Puccini Operas for the Ukraine National Opera, scenic art on the Lionsgate film You’re Next, and the world premiere of Master and Margarita with Honorary Associate Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, Barry Kyle and A-list screen writer Ron Hutchinson. Ryan is also a proud Co-Founder of Bellenwhissle Productions, a Theatre for Young Audiences company based out of Kansas City that creates site-specific interactive shows around the Midwest based on several literary classics.
