Lincoln Inaugural Address:

March 3, 1861 What has already taken

place?? Secession of 7 states

beginning w/ S.C. Fort Sumter is brewing,

Lincoln must decide what to do…

Page 6: Tuesday Sep. 28, 2010

"The power confided to me will be used to hold, occupy, and possess the property and places belonging to the Government…"

"I have no purpose, directly or indirectly, to interfere with the institution of slavery in the States where it exists. I believe I have no lawful right to do so...."

Page 7: Tuesday Sep. 28, 2010

In your hands, my dissatisfied fellow-countrymen, and not in mine, is the

momentous issue of civil war.... You can have no conflict without being yourselves the

aggressors. You have no oath registered in heaven to destroy the Government, while I

shall have the most solemn one to 'preserve, protect, and defend it.'

"I am loath to close. We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies..."What are Lincoln’s

options??

Options1.Resupply the fort

2.Resupply and send troops

3.Fight to keep the fort (offensive)

4.Abandon the fort

What do you think Lincoln did?

Page 11: Tuesday Sep. 28, 2010

Spark #5 1. Write down the option you think Lincoln chose in terms of

Ft. Sumter. Resupply but NO troops!

2. Why do you think many Civil War battles have at least 2 names? i.e.- the first major land battle of the Civil War is called both

“First Battle of Bull Run,” and, “First Manassas?” Yankees one name, Rebels another-based on what “impressed

them about the place”

3. Look at the maps on p. 161 &162. In what 2 areas of the country are the first major battles of the Civil War? Why would battles take place in those areas? West (Mississippi River), and East (Richmond/D.C.)

Page 12: Tuesday Sep. 28, 2010

Lincoln’s choice

April 6 1861 Lincoln sends food and supplies-but no troops- to Fort Sumter

April 10 1861- Before supplies arrive Jefferson Davis orders Fort to surrender-they do not surrender-and the Civil War begins

Day after Lincoln calls for troops to volunteer 3 months!!

Sumter outcome?
