Chapter 1 Prompts

• (1) Describe some of Shin’s daily experiences in Camp 14. Choose three specific things that you found to be surprising.

• (2) Describe Shin’s food situation and explain the “eating problem” in North Korea.

Chapters 6-9

(1) Torture is often used in the book to control the people and elicit information. What are specific examples of this? Is torture ever justified? Why or why not?

(2) How does Shin come to learn kindness? What do you think of the irony that while imprisoned in a cell he finally understands what it means to love another person?

(3) What is your reaction to Shin’s new teacher? To what extent is he a good guy?

Chapters 12-14

(1) To what extent is Shin a victim? To what extent is he a perpetrator (wrongdoer)?

(2) “Freedom, in Shin’s mind, was just another word for grilled meat.” What does the author mean by this? How does the knowledge of food cause a fundamental shift in Shin’s behavior?

(3) Is Shin’s attitude towards his father justified? Why or why not? What do you think about the risk Shin is taking by escaping and his father being punished? Is that right? Why or why not?

Chapters 21 & 23

• (1) Describe the difficulties Shin faces in attempting to adjust to life outside North Korea.

• (2) A Korean-American LiNK volunteer says, "Shin is still a prisoner." What does he mean? Describe how although Shin no longer lives in Camp 14 he is still a prisoner.
