ALAMEDA COUNTY REGISTRAR OF VOTERS HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT POLL WORKER PROGRAM In August 1996, the California State Legislature adopted a law allowing High School Students to serve as Poll Workers on Election Day. The Student Poll Worker Program promotes civic awareness and educates about the election process by involving students to serve as Poll Workers on Election Day. The Election Day experience will help students learn about responsibility, teamwork, and leadership! The California Education Code Section 48205 and the Elections Code Section 12302, states that all High School students must meet the following qualifications to serve as a Poll Worker on Election Day: Must be 16 years of age at the time of election Must be a U.S. Citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident (Green Card Holder) Must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 (on a 4.0 Scale) Do you want to raise money for your school, charity, or for yourself? Do you want to make a difference and serve your community? Do you want to learn about the election process? Do you want to show colleges and potential employers that you have a record of responsibility, teamwork, and leadership? Are you bilingual? Bilingual student poll workers can earn an extra $10! If you answered YES to any of the questions above, we would like to invite you to participate in the High School Student Poll Worker Program through the Alameda County Registrar of Voters office. A P P O I N T M E N T• Students who applied, met the qualifications and requirements will receive ‘Notice of Appointment’ by email about their

assigned precinct and training class information

S E R V I N G• On Election Day, students are advised to dress comfortably as it will be a long day. Students are prohibited from using cell

phones during their service time, unless they are on lunch/dinner or break.

“How do I sign up to be a student poll worker?”All student applicants must meet required qualifications and submit a completed High School Student Poll Worker Application.

“Where am I going to serve on Election Day?”Student poll workers will be assigned a polling place no more than 10-20 minutes away from their home. Check your email for Notice of Appointment.

“What do I do if I am no longer available to serve on Election Day?” Contact the Registrar of Voters Recruiting Unit as soon as possible if you are no longer available on Election Day.

“Will I be compensated for attending training class even if I cancel my Election Day assignment?”No. You will not receive pay for training.

“How can I better prepare for the election?Student poll workers can take the Online Training Course to review important information covered during in-person training class and earn $5 extra upon passing quizzes. Online training course can be accessed through My Poll Worker Profile.

“When will I receive my stipend for serving on Election Day?” Pay for service will be mailed out approximately 4-6 weeks after Election Day. If you do not receive a check for your service within the given time frame, please contact the ROV Recruiting Unit immediately.
