Lesson 7.2 Graph Exponential Decay Functions
A dosage of 20 mg of a drug is given to patients when they are in extreme pain. A typical half-life of the drug is about 2 hours. This means that in 2 hours half the drug has cleared the patient’s system. It is safe to re-administer the drug when the there is less than 5 mg remaining in the patient’s system. How long after the first dose is administered is it safe to give a second dose?

Lesson 7.2 Graph Exponential Decay Functions
See if you can come up with an equation for this situation.
Let’s graph it….

Lesson 7.2 Graph Exponential Decay Functions
What an exponential decay function looks like:

Lesson 7.2 Graph Exponential Decay Functions
How is this graph different from the graphs of exponential growth?
For exponential decay what must be true about the base?
