Nyquist's doubters likely will remain skeptical

following the undefeated colt's 3-year-old debut

victory in Santa Anita's $200,000 San Vicente Stakes

(gr. II), but his connections are just fine with that.

After the son of Uncle Mo's 1 1/2-length score

over Exaggerator in the seven-furlong dirt test, own-

er Paul Reddam spoke to the juvenile male champi-

on's detractors.

"They can give him respect or not, but that's

not going to affect his performance on the race-

track," Reddam said. "We try not to take any of that

personally, and if they want to say, 'That was only

seven-eighths. How is he going to be at a mile and an

eighth or a mile and a quarter?' We'll let him tell us."

Nyquist certainly made believers out of Exaggera-

tor's connections.

"Goodness gracious," Exaggerator's trainer Keith

Desormeaux said. "Anybody not a believer in Nyquist

now—that was an awesome race. To set those kinds of

fractions and still finish in close to track-record time for

SUDDENBREAKINGNEWS CAPTURES SOUTHWESTBy Tom LaMarra

Donnie Von Hemel had a couple of concerns

heading into the Feb. 15 Southwest Stakes

(gr. III) at Oaklawn Park with his trainee Sudden-

breakingnews, a 3-year-old Mineshaft gelding: It

was his first start of the year and he had drawn

post 13 in a 14-horse field.

But Suddenbreakingnews overcame the obsta-

cles with a last-to-first rally under Luis Quinonez

to win the 1 1/16-mile Southwest over Whitmore

and American Dubai. Owned by Samuel Hen-

derson and bred by Branch Equine in Kentucky,

Suddenbreakingnews, a $72,000 Keeneland Sep-

tember yearling purchase, has four wins and two

seconds in six starts.

"(Quinonez) had to drop back and make the

one run," Von Hemel said. "Considering the post

and the pace, it probably was to his advantage."

In two of five starts last year at Remington Park,

Suddenbreakingnews won the Clever Trevor Stakes

and finished second in the Springboard Mile.

Von Hemel said the "most likely next race"

for Suddenbreakingnews is Oaklawn's March 19

Rebel Stakes (gr. II). "But there are so many vari-

ables in horse racing, you try not to get ahead of

yourself." BH

Suddenbreakingnews rallied from 14th and last to capture the Feb. 15 Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park

PAGE McKENNEY TAKES GENERAL GEORGEBy Ron Mitchell

The storybook career of Page

McKenney became even richer Feb.

15 when the 6-year-old gelded son

of Eavesdropper wore down favored

Majestic Affair for a head victory in the

General George Stakes (gr. III) at Laurel

Park.

Trained by Mary Eppler, Page McK-

enney settled in fourth as Green Gratto

and Majestic Hussar set the pace. Leav-

ing the turn, Majestic Affair took over

under strong urging as Page McKenney

ranged up on the outside and gradually

wore down the 3-2 favorite.

Page McKenney, off at 2-1 under Horacio Kara-

manos, stopped the timer in 1:24.61 for seven fur-

longs on a sub-freezing day. The victory was Page

McKenney's first in graded company; he previously

placed in three graded races.

"I have ridden a lot of nice horses, but this

horse is all heart," Karamanos said.

With his 16th win (including nine stakes) to ac-

company 16 placings in 43 starts, Page McKenney

has now earned $1,171,978. He races for Adam

Staple along with Dr. James Bryant and Linda P.

Davis, who bred him in Pennsylvania and lost

him in the claiming ranks before re-purchasing a

minor interest. BH

Page McKenney, who passed the $1 million mark in earnings earlier this year, claimed his first graded stakes win Feb. 15 in the General George Stakes at Laurel Park

SUNLAND PARK PLAN QUESTIONEDBy Ron Mitchell

Not all owners at Sunland Park—which has not had

racing since Jan. 22 due to an outbreak of equine

herpesvirus—are on board with management's

decision to resume racing Feb. 26 even though about

40% of the horse population remains quarantined.

Since the EHV-1 outbreak, six horses have died

from the disease's effects and at least 66 have test-

ed positive. Under the plan to resume racing, only

horses from barns not quarantined would be allowed

to participate.

Dr. Miguel L. Gallegos, a physician with a large sta-

ble at Sunland Park, would like to see racing resume

in order to recoup some of his costs, but he believes

racing shouldn't resume until the virus has been con-

tained. Otherwise, it will continue to pose problems,

he said.

"I'm thinking of the big picture and not just getting

some money in my pocket right now," he said. "I want

to race, too, but I also want there to be racing once

this is all over."

The New Mexico Racing Commission has sched-

uled a special meeting Feb. 17 to discuss the out-

break. BH

RISEN STAR CHANCE TO GAUGE MO TOMBy Tom LaMarra

Tom Amoss said the Feb. 20 Risen Star (gr. II)

field at Fair Grounds is one of the deepest he

has seen and believes that's good for Mo Tom,

the 3-year-old Uncle Mo colt he trains for G M B

Racing.

Among the competition is morning-line favorite

Airoforce, last year's Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes

(gr. II) winner over Mor Spirit and Mo Tom.

"This is an opportunity to gauge my horse as

a 3-year-old with more experience as opposed to

when they met when they were 2," Amoss said.

"He's a May foal, and he's really yet to develop phys-

ically in my opinion, but we're starting to see it."

G M B Racing acquired Mo Tom for $150,000

at the Keeneland September yearling sale. He

won the Lecomte Stakes (gr. III) at Fair Grounds in

his last start and won the Street Sense Stakes at

Churchill Downs last year. The colt drew post 2 in

the 13-horse Risen Star field.

"I like the post," Amoss said. "He's a one-run

horse, and being down near the rail will allow him

to sit and then make his run." BH

RACINGCOMMENTARYwith Bob Barry

HEDGING YOUR DERBY BETS

Every so often I am reminded of how pleas-

ant it would be to live someplace with legal

bookmaking. It's not that relocating to Nevada

or Dublin or the Cotswolds is on the horizon.

There's the expense and bother and—be-

sides—I would miss going to Saratoga. The

preference would be for legal bookmakers to

move closer to me rather than the other way

around.

This thought resurfaced this past weekend

when the second round of the Kentucky Derby

Future Wager opened and closed. It's said that

a mule is a horse designed by a committee. To

anyone who has ever visited a Las Vegas sports

book or an English or Irish bookmaking shop,

betting the KDFW is like playing the horses

while riding a mule. It's not a totally unpleasant

experience, but there are better options.

For starters, the 24 separate betting inter-

ests (23 individual horses and one for "all other

3-year-olds") is way too few, making the "all

other" option in the February pool an all-too-

likely result. Getting 23 horses to choose from

may sound like a lot, but the

committee selecting the fields

has included the eventual

Derby winner in the February

pool only 10 out of 17 times

(accordingly, the February "all

others" bet shows a positive

return of $2.89 for every $2.00

wagered).

Rather than offering an en-

ticingly wide array of longer-

priced Derby hopefuls, the

meager February KDFW pool

has instead become the place

for certain bettors to make

preemptive hedges on their

eventual Derby plays. It's not

an attractive bet for the "weekend" or more

casual horseplayer, unless you like taking 5-2

three months prior to the biggest race of the

year.

With the upper echelon of this year's crop of

3-year-old colts seemingly able to fit in a phone

booth, the undefeated Mohaymen and Nyquist

were pounded down to 4-1 and 7-1, respec-

tively, in this latest pool that closed Feb. 14.

Considering that well-backed Derby favorites

these days typically enter the gate at about 3-1,

that the race is still 12 weeks out, and that Lad-

brokes is offering 8-1 on Mohaymen and 20-1

on Nyquist, the prices on these two contenders

seem woefully short.

Other than playing on an illegal offshore ac-

count, or leaning on friends in Vegas or London

to place your action, what's a horseplayer to

do? Sometimes the best play is no play.

After years of waiting in vain for legal book-

making to arrive in New Jersey, I can certainly

hold off until the First Saturday in May. Or,

at the very least, until KDFW Pool 3 kicks off

March 11. BH
