Astrology Headed to Jerome... Stonestreet Stables and George Bolton=s Astrology(A.P. Indy), runner-up in the Mar. 27 GIII Sunland ParkDerby, will now be pointed for the GII Jerome S. atAqueduct Apr. 23. AWe think the Jerome is a nice spotfor him coming off the Sunland Derby, a race in whichhe ran hard,@ trainer Steve Asmussen said in a pressrelease, adding, AWe feel that running him in the [May 7GI] Kentucky Derby off one prep race is too much toask of him at this point.@ On the board in all six careerstarts, Astrology captured the GIII Iroquois S. at Chur-chill last October, and ended the season with a secondin the GII Kentucky Jockey Club S. the followingmonth. The Sunland Derby was his sophomore bow.

Barbaro=s majestic victory in the Kentucky Derby stillburns brightly in the memory nearly five years on. Itwas inevitable, then, that many of the breeders usingDynaformer the following year would try to replicateBarbaro=s excellence by sending him more mares fromthe Mr. Prospector line--especially since Barbaro was farfrom an isolated example. In addition to siring Barbaro from a Carson City mare,Dynaformer had also shown considerable potential withdaughters of Seeking the Gold, Kingmambo and of Mr.Prospector himself. From only four runners out ofSeeking the Gold mares, Dynaformer has beenrepresented by the Grade I winner Riskaverse; his firstfoal out of a Kingmambo mare was Ocean Silk, thehighest-rated English-trained 3-year-old staying filly of2003; and his eight runners out of Mr. Prospectormares were headed by the Grade I winner Film Maker. The intervening years have seen the merits of theDynaformer/Mr. Prospector cross further advertised bythe Grade I winners Gozzip Girl and Wiener Walzer(both out of Kingmambo mares), the Grade II winnerMasseuse (Mr. Prospector) and the Grade III winnersVacation (Seeking The Gold), Haka (Mr. Prospector) andBearpath (Unbridled=s Song).

Pedigree Insights cont.

When I wrote about Gozzip Girl and Wiener Walzer inJuly 2009, I commented that we could expectDynaformer to come up with an avalanche of goodwinners from granddaughters of Mr. Prospector overthe next few years. This none-too-difficult prophecy is already coming tofruition thanks to Dynaformer=s 70-strong 2008 crop, which includes 19 youngsters out of granddaughters ofMr. Prospector.

Godolphin=s filly White Moonstone became the crop=sfirst Group 1 winner when she retained her unbeatenrecord in the Fillies= Mile last September. She is one ofDynaformer=s first 28 foals out of Seeking the Goldmares--a collection which has so far produced threegraded winners, one stakes winner and fourgraded-placed performers. Now the last-ditch victory by Brilliant Speed in theBlue Grass S. has raised the possibility that Dynaformerhas another viable Kentucky Derby contender, followingBlumin Affair, third to Go For Gin in 1994, Perfect Drift, who chased home War Emblem and Proud Citizen in2002, and Barbaro in 2006. Brilliant Speed is the first good winner to emergefrom Dynaformer=s first 14 foals out of Gone Westmares, four of them 3-year-olds of 2011. However,Derby success would be nothing new for Gone West inthe role of broodmare sire, as one of his daughtersproduced Motivator, winner of the 2005 Epsom Derby.Awesome Feather, last year=s champion juvenile filly, isanother out of a Gone West mare. Gone West never managed to sire a Kentucky Derbywinner, with Proud Citizen representing his best effortwhen second in 2002, but he did sire a Belmont S.winner in Commendable, and his son Elusive Qualitymade an indelible mark on the Triple Crown withSmarty Jones.

Pedigree Insights cont.

There is also a link to a winner of a Triple Crownevent in Brilliant Speed=s female line, as his seconddam, the good Canadian filly Daijin, is a sister to TouchGold, hero of the 1997 Belmont S. Daijin is also ahalf-sister to the Canadian Triple Crown winner WithApproval, who later ran second in the Arlington Millionand Breeders= Cup Turf, so there is no shortage ofstamina in this family. Brilliant Speed=s third dam Passing Mood was aleading Canadian 2-year-old. However, her pedigreewas more that of a top performer at around a mile anda quarter, as she was by Buckpasser and her first twodams were by Northern Dancer and Mahmoud. TheNorthern Dancer mare was Cool Mood, a winner of theCanadian Oaks, and the Mahmoud mare was HappyMood, winner of the Acorn S., so this is a family ofconsistent quality. Other Grade I winners descendingfrom Happy Mood include Discreet Cat, DiscreetlyMine, Pretty Discreet, Buryyourbelief (Kentucky Oaks),Healthy Addiction and Haynesfield. Daijin has also contributed to the family fortunes byproducing the accomplished Canadian filliesHandpainted and Serenading to A.P. Indy. She alsoscored a hit in the sales ring when her Gone West fillySpeed Succeeds sold for $1,450,000 to Live OakPlantation at Keeneland=s 2002 September Sale. Onlythree fillies sold for more at that year=s Americanyearling sales. Unfortunately, Speed Succeeds never managed torace, but she has made amends by producing BrilliantSpeed as her third foal, her fourth being a 2-year-oldcolt by Indian Charlie. As Brilliant Speed started at 19-1 in the Blue Grass, having won only one of his seven previous races, itisn=t easy to assess his prospects in the KentuckyDerby. The picture is also clouded by the fact that hewas soundly beaten each time he tackled a dirt track.Remember, though, that those two dirt starts came onhis first two starts last summer, one of them over fivefurlongs. He was slowly away on his debut, andshowed distinct signs of inexperience when rank on hissecond appearance. His all-weather debut in the BlueGrass was preceded by five starts on turf, a surfacethat also featured in Barbaro=s route to ChurchillDowns. It=s in his favour that he will be suited by the step upto a mile and a quarter and his pedigree suggests thathe deserves a chance to shine back on the main track,as it combines two forces--Hail to Reason and Mr.Prospector--which have regularly made their presencefelt on Derby Day.

--Amy BondonEstrorace LLC God bless you. That was beautifully spot on anddreadfully spot on, both, I am sad to say. (A ManagedResponse, TDN Op/Ed, 4/18/11.) You so exactly captured the really agonizing thing forthose of us who know these animals, certainly myself, Iam afraid, better than I know humans...that look; damnthat look and how can this be violated, the trust thislook portrays? One way is to never see these sales first hand, tostay away from anything where you have to look tooclose at the "by-products" of our sport. It's not hard todo and mostly, but for the media or someone inside likeyou making us look, we can avoid hard thoughts onthis. I have always taken the utmost care to be responsiblefor all the animals in my program, but there's no tellingwhat happens to them when I am no longer in controlof their destiny. Almost certainly, as I have been doingthis thing for now 34 years, animals from my breeding, racing, sales or clients have, unbeknownst to any ofus...ended up ending this way. I bought a yearling for a man who cares absolutelyalways for his horses first. This was his first ventureinto sole proprietorship and this wonderful geldingended up winning a stakes in his third start at three. That was years ago and he was eventually taken fromhis trainer through the claim box. Always watchingafter him and his well-being, through several years ofchanging hands and earning a decent living for hisconnections, this gentleman had this gelding'strainer/owner contacted and told them absolutely ifever they were finished with him to call him and hewould buy/take, whatever it would require, this horseand ensure him a permanent home.

Outside of this kind of valorous and responsiblebehavior, I don't know the answer. There are flat outtoo many horses and they have no residual value. Drivearound in Ocala if you want your heart broken by theempty farms, overgrown and endlessly, seeminglyhopelessly listed for sale, one after the other. Listen tothe stories of people with no money and unable to payrent, unable to feed themselves, and we have seen this, still trying so hard to feed the animals they cannot evenentertain breeding or breaking or even registering now. It's terrible, it's pervasive and I don't know that there isa remedy, but rescue...

Op/Ed Feedback cont.

These are exacting, perilous times in the world, in oursport, all over. That dear trusting mare may havebelonged to some poor disenfranchised member of thisindustry, someone who could have used Aan act ofsaving or being saved from danger or distress"..butnone came. My heart breaks for the horses, Sue, but for thepeople more so. May we all appeal to the better angelsof our nature with respect to this dire reality of somany people languishing in hopelessness and lack of alivelihood now in horse racing and breeding. May wesupport the organizations that reach out to them andthank God we have so many that do. It's a question with no good answer, it's a problemthat won=t go away, it's a reality we have to face. Lifeis tough if this is your lot, dreadfully tough, for thehorses and the people. May we do the best we canwhen we have been blessed ourselves, with some extraover the immense cost of being in this business andtrying to feed ourselves and keep a shelter over ourheads. May the "better angels of our nature" prevail.

WAR FRONT FILLY TOPS OBS APRIL EARLYRETURNS Few sires have been as hot as War Front(Danzig) at the juvenile sales this year, and the loneprospect by Claiborne=s up-and-comer at the openingsession of the OBS Spring Two-Year-Olds in TrainingSale Monday kept the ball rolling for the second-cropstallion. Hip 261, a filly by War Front out of SW TappinFor Gold (Pleasant Tap), was purchased by Buzz Chace, agent for Jayeff B Stable, for $275,000. Consigningduties were handled by Alexandra de Meric andBrandon Rice, who had acquired the filly under thebanner New Mission Bloodstock for $80,000 atKeeneland September. She was the fifth-highest WarFront yearling to sell last season. At that point, WarFront could boast a single black-type winner, the grassyGIII With Anticipation S. hero Soldat, but in the nextfew months, he=d add five more, including J “TDNRising Star” J The Factor, home first in the GII SanVicente and GII Rebel S. War Front=s daughter SummerSoiree, meanwhile, became his third graded winner inthe GIII Bourbonette Oaks, and Soldat establishedhimself as a legitimate GI Kentucky Derby hopeful witha victory in the GII Fountain of Youth S. War Front=s success has led to something of a run onhis 2-year-olds this year. Bloodstock agent Steve Youngwent to $375,000 for a colt out of True Gritz (Yes It=sTrue), then came back at Keeneland April to buy a half-brother to Laragh (Tapit) for $475,000. At the sameKeeneland April Sale, Stonestreet Stables purchased acolt out of La Prada for $485,000--the second-highestprice at the auction. Hip 261 rode this momentum intoOBS April, then separated herself from the pack with asharp :10 1/5 breeze going an eighth Apr. 12. Shebecomes the second straight big seller at the OBSSpring sale for de Meric and Rice. A year ago, thecouple sold Humble and Hungry (Limehouse--Cukee, byLangfuhr), a $7,000 FTKOCT yearling buy, to Bob Feld, agent for Sagamore Farm, for $200,000. The colt wasa grassy maiden winner at Belmont last fall and wasbeaten just 3 1/2 lengths when unplaced in the GII Breeders= Cup Juvenile Turf in November.

‘Descent’ Bro Brings $150,000... A day after Turbulent Descent (Congrats) stretchedclear to an easy win in the GII Beaumont S. atKeeneland, a year-younger half-brother to the MGISWwent under the hammer at OBS April. By the red-hotexpatriated sire Trippi, the colt sold to Hidden Brook for$150,000. Selling from the draft of breeder Ocala Studas hip 59, the colt was produced by the 10-year-oldRoger's Sue (Forestry), an unraced half-sister to MGSPBonay (Wild Again) whose second dam is the MGISWmillionairess Gorgeous (Slew o'Gold). Ocala Stud sentout hip 59 to a quarter-mile breeze in :21 1/5: at thefirst breeze show Apr. 12.

NATIONAL HBPA OPPOSED TO RCI FIVE-YEARPLAN AS CURRENTLY PROPOSED The NationalHBPA Board of Directors issued a press releaseMonday, stating their unanimous opposition to the planproposed by the Association of Racing CommissionersInternational that all medication in racing be phased outin the next five years. In the release, the National HBPAstated, AAs the national representative of the largestnumber of horsemen who would be directly impactedby what the RCI proposes, the National HBPA takesissue with RCI=s strategy of pushing a proposal withsuch far-reaching implications without initiallyconferring with any of the major representativehorsemen=s groups, including the National HBPA. TheNational HBPA agrees that, within the five-year goalestablished by the RCI, a national plan that addressesthe concerns it has raised could be attainable. However, the vagueness of the RCI=s proposal and its pre-determined outcome are cause for great concern.@ Toaddress the issue, the National HBPA has announcedthat its annual Summer Convention, to be held July 21-24 in Seattle, will focus entirely on the RCIproposal. Speaker forums will be assembled with thegoal of answering questions including what theconsequences of the RCI plan might be; whatalternative therapies would be available to treat horsesthat bleed if the use of Furosemide is banned; howtrainers in other countries handle the problem; what theeconomic impact on racing might be; and what factorsmight make U.S. horses more susceptible to bleeding.AThe National HBPA is dedicated to gathering divergentand reasonable viewpoints on this issue, and willcontinue to rely upon the reasoned, professional andscientific approach to the medication policy thatstatistics show serves our industry well,@ the statementsaid.
