DRINKS

In Tudor times because there was only dirty water people had to drink something else and that something was ale, sherry, cider or wine.

The rich Tudors drank all of these but the poor just drank ale or cider.

The poor drank 1 gallon of ale or cider a day. They made it themselves from apples.

Even children drank these. They also drank milk because some people had their own cows.

Rich people drank from wine glasses and the poor people drank from wooden goblets that they carved.

WHAT POOR PEOPLE ATE IN TUDOR TIMES

In Tudor times poor people did not have loads of money so they could only buy cheap food or eat food that they had grown.

People could make bread and had animals like pigs, cows and chickens. The chicken laid eggs and the cows made milk.

Tudor people would drink the milk from the cows but the milk could also be used to make butter.

Because poor people couldn’t afford meat they grew vegetables to eat.

In Tudor times people did not have freezers and could not keep food fresh. They could only eat seasonal vegetables.

Rich people in Tudor times, like Henry VIII, liked to eat expensive food.

Most of the food and drink, such as wine, they had was made in other countries and it was then sent to rich people by boat. This is why the food was expensive.

Rich people would have feasts with lots of food that went on for hours.

Rich people used metal spoons made from silver or pewter. Poor people couldn’t afford these so they carved their own spoons from wood.

TABLE MANNERS

Tudors were very strict about good table manners.

They could not put their elbows on the table, put their fingers in their ears, put their hands on their heads, blow their nose with their hands, play with their food or speak with food in their mouths.

Bones weren’t placed back on the plate. They had to be put on the floor.

Children were taught good table manners when they were little.

Even poor people had good table manners.

Poor Tudor people shared one meal and ate with their hands. People watched each other wash their hands because they did not want dirt in their food.

NO WIND AT THE TABLE!!!

TUDOR RECIPES

Poor people made pottage. They would eat it with bread. You can make pottage with peas, milk, egg yolk, breadcrumbs, parsley, ginger and saffron.

Rich people could afford to eat rice pudding. It was expensive because English people could not grow rice and sugar because it is too cold. Rice pudding was made from rice, sugar, nutmeg, milk, raisins and apricots.
